Magnus Pettersson Hand Knife Sharpening

Magnus is a knife sharpening Pro! Took 5 Henckels knives to him after making an appointment. He met me outside to pick up, and within an hour called me to let me know they were ready. Met me again outside and I paid him, The cost is definitely fair. He takes great pride in his work, and has a passion for what he does. The knives were much sharper from when I even first got them. Would highly reccomend.

I’ve been to Magnus for my knives a couple times now. He is by far the best I have found. He takes his time and is very precise with the knives. He clearly has a love for what he does and it shows.

Magnus is great. Have used him twice now and both times he did a great job. Very fair prices too.

3:30PM — Send SMS inquiry whether I can drop knives off to Magnus in Santa Monica, as I live in Hollywood. He agrees.
4:30PM — Drop off 6 knives. I go grab a bite nearby.
5:25PM — Receive SMS «Your knives are ready».
5:30PM — I pickup knives. I don’t need to check them. I know they’ll be razor sharp.

Magnus is the best at sharpening knives. I couldn’t be happier AND his prices are reasonable.

Super fast and excellent work! I called to ask Magnus if I could bring my knives by in the next day or so, but he let me know he was going to be away and told me I can bring the 5 knives down right now and he would do them immediately. Well from the time I placed the call until he texted to let me know he was done all happened in under 1 hour!!! (I think it was all done in about 30 minutes because he was done faster than the load of clothes I had to wash and dry!) One of the knives had a pretty bad nick that I didn’t think would ever be back to normal again, but he actually made it look and feel brand new. In fact, all the knives came back so sharp it has made chopping a breeze! I highly recommend Magnus for quick, professional service and excellent quality workmanship!

Fixed a knife that I thought had been ruined by a houseguest, and did it in less than an hour for just $ 12. Great service.

I found Magnus here and can now attest that he is the best. I’ve had knives sharpened elsewhere for much more and waited longer to get them back. You can’t beat Magnus’ prices and quick turn-​around (they were ready before I could even get through the line at the post office). He warned me they were «crazy sharp» when he returned them to me, and indeed they are. I came home and gave them the «paper test» and they moved through paper like it was butter. Magnus is my new go-​to for all sharpening needs!

Magnus did a great job with my knives! Tip repair was wonderful, looked good as new. All the knives we gave him came back sharp as a scapel. Great service for a great price.

Wow! I took my 5 of my chef knives to magnus today and all I can say is wow! Shaving sharp! Shaving! Sharp! It took him less than an hour and a half to so I dropped them off with him and went and had breakfast and he was done before I even finished my meal. I drove from OXNARD specifically to have him sharpen my knives and it was totally worth it! Roughly $ 10 a knife is a bargain for the level of work he performs. Couldn’t recommend him enough, definitely coming back to him next time I need a knife sharpened. Totally worth the hour long drive

Magnus is fantastic. Professional, friendly and puts an amazing edge on the knives. Had him sharpen an assortment of my Japanese knives and 2 of my sister’s German knives (and a Laguiole folding knife for good measure). All of them came back with a beautifully sharp and properly angled edge for each knife.
His pickup/​delivery service is great. Can’t recommend Magnus enough. Used to take my knives to Japanese Knife Imports in BH (and they do a great job), but Magnus does an equivalently great job and is much more convenient. He’s my knife guy now.

Magnus works out of his apartment and met me curbside (street parking is virtually non-​existent) to pick up my pocket knife and had it sharpened and cleaned within 30 minutes. Price was reasonable too, at $ 7. Very nice guy, too!

I bought a straight razor but it was dull, couldn’t cut and was just a hassle to use. I thought to myself «Oh well, money wasted» until I came across Magnus. With fast response and courteous service, Magnus took in my razor and sharpened it for me with great care. The razor cuts wonderfully now. To further add, it’s a pleasure to work with Magnus, he’s very nice, approachable, and fast!

Magnus actually offers pick up and delivery for the west side. Unfortunately, I live all the way in the South Bay. No matter. He was very responsive via text message. I was able to set up an appointment the next day to drop off my knives, and within an hour, I had them back as good as the day I bought them.
I like that he sharpens them by hand with a whetstone. His prices are also very reasonable. It was $ 18 for both my Shun 8 inch chefs knife and my Wusthof 6 inch santoku knife. One place down the street from me wanted $ 22 for one and $ 16 for the other.
It was a bit of a drive, but well worth it. Hey having lunch in Santa Monica while your knives are sharpened isn’t the worst way to spend your day.
He works from home so you’ll need to set up an appointment ahead of time. He was very nice and professional, and my knives are razor sharp! Until next time!

Magnus is awesome. Until I purchase my own whetstones and figure out how to DIY, he is the only person that I trust to sharpen my knives. Not because they’re particularly fancy or expensive (just basic set of Henckels) but because I like to take good care of my possessions.
Magnus shares that sense of pride and respect, always sharpening by hand on Japanese whetstones (never on a stone grinder — so bad for knives!). He’s just an email, phone call, or text message away, and better yet — he offers free pick-​up and delivery on the West Side. Coincidentally my office is only a few blocks away so one of us will walk over. How «green» :P
The price is excellent for his quality of work, especially when it comes to 8″-10″ Chef’s knives. Admittedly the cost per inch is higher to get my paring knife done, but I splurge a bit on that. Using a well sharpened knife makes a HUGE difference (not to mention it’s much safer than a dull knife, as counterintuitive as that may sound). Do yourself (and your fingertips) a favor and go see Magnus… he’ll return your knives «shaving sharp».

I was just looking for Magnus’ number to give him a call for a knife sharpening when I realized I hadn’t written him a review. This will be my third time getting my knives sharpened by Magnus and I can’t recommend him highly enough.
Magnus does an amazing job and if you take a few minutes to read through his blog you can tell that he deeply cares about his craft. I have learned a lot about knives just by reading it. I currently only have a nice chef’s and pairing knife but when I get a new a nicer knife set I will definitely use Magnus’ wisdom.
I always drop my knives off and he meets me out front. He is super friendly and easy to deal with. Anybody that is looking for a place to get their knives taken care of should go to Magnus. Skip Williams-​Sonoma, Sur la Table, or anywhere else and just come to him. You, and your knives, will be glad you did.

I thought they would be sharper. Maybe Magnus was having a bad day?
Do note this is a residence and you need to call ahead. This is not obvious from the webpage or blog. I drove around looking for a storefront. He did call me back a bit later, and I was able to return to drop off, and it went smoothly after that. Though the confusion was initially annoying, great customer service, hence the 2 stars.
I don’t live in Santa Monica, so the delivery aspect is probably worth it.
