Chu Nin’s Hairstyling

Great bang for your buck, Chu Nin is hilarious and talented with the hair. I lived in DC for four years and STILL flew back to LA for Chu Nin to cut my hair. You will leave with great hair and a story. Great deal for hair in spendy Santa Monica, and walk-​ins are welcome.

You either like Chu Nin or you don’t. I have been getting my haircuts there for many years and every time I go there she is overjoyed to see me. It has seen better days in the past but it is definitely worth the money for haircuts!

I have been in L.A. for lil while now and I went to a few hairstylist who were disappointing. Until I found Chu Nin’s Aveda hair salon, Chu Nin did a wonderful job with my hair. I never told her what i wanted done, I left the creativity to the artist and it was a wonderful job. I will def be going back.

This review is for Sheryl — she is great! I haven’t gone to anyone else at the salon but you are in good hands with Sheryl for a cut and style.

I went to see Mrs. Chu for a cut and color after reading the reviews on this site. I have had some really bad salon experiences in the past few years, so it was very important for me to find a stylist/​colorist who really knew their stuff. She was very hospitable and outgoing, but most importantly, she did an amazing job on my hair. As far as the cut, I told her to keep in long and do whatever she thought would look best. The result: she created a cut that is very flattering to my bone structure. As far as the color, I told her I wanted a beautiful ombré and that is exactly what she did. I am very picky and hard to please, so I rarely walk out of a salon satisfied, but I did when I left her salon. It has been about a month, and I still recieve many compliments everywhere I go, on a daily basis. Even my sister, who is very critical, just said it was the best cut and color job she has every seen on me. I will deinitely be back to see Mrs. Chu! :)

Extremely reasonable and fair (pricing) and fantastic location. I haven’t been anywhere else for haircuts since I found Chu Nin over a year ago. She does visit while she works, so make sure you have a little extra time. Highly recommended. Also, she has a fantastic associate who does wonderful facials. Speaking of, I need to schedule my next one. Loved it!

I’ve been going to Chu Nin for 9 years. I send my friends and family in to see her and have had nothing but excellent service. Many times I walk in without an appt and can be squeezed in. A very accomodating salon. Her cuts and color are exactly what I ask… never any surprises. She worked with me during my wedding in 2006. I was thrilled with the amount of time she spent with my wedding party and I. Helpful and friendly with everyone. Her extensions are some of the best in the business. She doesn’t need to advertise. Her work speaks for itself. I have had extensions for many years and am often asked where I go. I don’t trust anyone else when it comes to extensions! She is amazing! If you want healthy, amazing hair I highly recommend Chu Nin. Awesome salon, amazing products and services…

I made an eye brow wax appointment on Tuesday for Friday at noon.
On Friday at noon I walked into the salon. I wasn’t greeted or welcomed. Finally another customer and Asian woman came from the back.
I told them why I was there. The Asian lady even motioned to the book and said «Yes I have you down.»
But then proceeded to tell me that the girl who was doing the waxing was not there.
When I asked how late was she running — she said about one hour and a half.
Hello? I received NO call and this was being done on my lunch break.
She spoke very poor English and said she was sorry but offered nothing else.
Thankfully I walked down the street to Byuti and they were able to fit me in.
Not only has Chu Nin lost a customer but I am an avid Aveda user and used to buy my products there.
NO more.

Although this is an Aveda salon, BEWARE!
I scheduled a 2PM appt, and when I got there, Chu Nin was just sitting a client down to cut her hair. Luckily the client’s hair was short, so I only had to wait about 15 min. Whatever, not a big deal. Chu Nin sat me down in her chair and proceeded to place the cape around me. All the sudden I feel a big yank at the back of my shirt. I asked what she did, and she said, «I took your tag off.» What? You mean the label in my shirt?!! Yes, she did. She ripped the label from my shirt b/​c she said it wasn’t sewn properly, and then said it wasn’t a big deal – she always takes her labels off her shirts, plus it was just cotton and wasn’t expensive. Unfortunately, the t-​shirt was $ 50 and now there’s a hole in it!
Then to make matters worse, the customer ahead of me was putting on AVEDA mascara directly on her lashes with the original wand, and the owner said nothing.
Needless to say, I took my business elsewhere. If you’re looking for a hair salon, try Byu-​ti, just a block away – 510 Wilshire Blvd, Santa Monica.

DO NOT GO HERE FOR EYELASH EXTENSIONS!!!
I cannot comment on the other services at this salon but they DO NOT know what they are doing when it comes to eyelash extension. I have had my lashes done on many occasions, at other salons, this is the first time I’ve ever experienced my lashes being glued together (and having to be cut apart) and the lashes going in all different directions! When I told her I wasn’t happy with the results, she never offered to fix it. She told me it was my fault because my eyelashes «grew funny»! RIDICULOUS! When I asked her to remove the lashes, she started scrubbing my eye lids with a solution that burned my eyes, when I asked her if I could flush the chemicals out of my eye, she told me to just relax as the tears streamed down my face!!! HORRIBLE HORRIBLE experience!

The Owner Mrs Chu was a hoot and she knows her stuff.
I had complements from folks who only casually know me on my new hair cut style. That was a first. She is a Hair Stylist in the original meaning of the words.
Talked a bit so I could not read and suffer through the experience in quiet like I usually do. But had to be engaged and hear little tidbits about how to fix up my hair in between learning about her kids.
The salon is right downtown in Santa Monica in walking distance to many tenants at high end buildings like

who are in town for short stays or long. We have recommended her work and they liked it.
Can do Color and Ladies styles. That is how I came to be there. My wife made the appointment.
I can not vouch for her other stylists in the other chairs.
Most important… Price to Value of end result is HIGH.
Not the most expensive. Definitely worth a try. Let her win you over.
