Active Movement

I purchased a groupon in March and attempted to get in contact with Active Movement personnel to schedule. I left several voicemails and no one ever returned my call. They may have gone out of business.

This was our 1^st activity in Venice Beach and a great way to see the sights.
Excellent customer service and fun!

A++! Received this as a gift as a stoking stuffer and had so much fun! Boyfriend and I had the all day rentals and we rode up to Venice and Santa Monica and spent 2.5 hours at the promenade eating lunch and shopping… The customer service was beyond extraordinary! I don’t usually leave reviews, but this guy was too amazing not to! He knows so much and is so helpful and gives you ideas and really cares about his customers!!! Will definitely be back!

This is almost a 5-​star review. Albert is absolutely a 5-​star guy. He’s friendly, knowledgeable, punctual, very responsive, and very accommodating. We got an amazing deal for the 4 bikes we rented all day and he almost delivered them to our hotel (we walked 2 blocks to retrieve them) and allowed us to leave them at the hotel where he picked them up at the agreed upon time. The deal we got cost us about the same as the amount we would have paid for regular bikes for 4-​hrs. The difference was that these were e-​bikes.
I don’t know if you know about e-​bikes. If not, let me enlighten you. Basically an e-​bike has 2 modes of propulsion. There’s pedal-​assist where you have to pedal a bit before the motor engages and offers assistance. This is great when you want to get a little bit of exercise but need that oomph to get you up on the hill. It’s also the most efficient use of the battery because it only engages the motor part time.
The other mode is full electric or throttle. This is when a lazy ass such as myself don’t feel like making circles with my feet and basically use the pedals like foot pegs on a motorcycle and just let the electric motor propel you.
Now let me tell you that in Venice, there was too much foot traffic to use either mode so we used these bikes the way Schwinn did it in the late 1800s. If you use either one of these modes, you would surely run into someone so be warned.
Now onto the equipment. These bikes are made by iZip and are probably first generation because they are old and heavy. The battery pack is behind you above the rear wheel which is less than ideal because of the high center of gravity. Brakes were very rusty and if you were trying to stop yourself down a hill, you’d be dead. Luckily we kept the bikes on the level bike path along the beach. The chain, shifters, and rear cassette was equally as rusty as the brakes. The battery indicator on the right handle has 3 LEDs – Green for fully charged, yellow for half, and red for low charge.
On our first bike, the motor was intermittently active and we had to call Albert who was super responsive and quickly swapped it out at our hotel. The bike I had suddenly died after the yellow indicator came on and I had to peddle it halfway back from Manhattan Beach which was 9 miles away. Imagine if your rental car ran out of gas when it showed there was still ½ tank of gas in the car. No bueno. Now I gotta break a sweat and pedal like everyone else on the beach. Grrrrr. LOL jk!
All in all, I think it was a great deal we got and shouldn’t complain too much. Can’t expect a Lexus when I paid Ford prices. Albert was so customer oriented that I would definitely do business with him again. Next time I’m bringing WD-​40.

Family did the all day and the bikes were part of our memorable day. This is a must do. Albert provided us with everything! His contact, promptness, information and knowledge was exceptional. You are in good hands. No problems with the bikes. This is a two times review because spouse wanted me to let everyone know he also recommends. Two thumbs up.

Haven’t been but misleading promo. Free 2hour rental with purchase. You need to rent 3 bikes at the same time, not so likely for most.

We purchased the 2 hour electric bike rental through Groupon. We loved the experience. The person we picked the bikes up from was very informative, gave us simple instructions, allowed us to practice before taking off, and adjusted the bikes to fit each of our heights. He knew a lot about the area, the bikes, and gave us several useful tips for the rest of our trip.
The bikes worked just as he had explained without any issues. We biked from Venice Beach to the Santa Monica Pier and back to our meeting spot with time to stop and see the sites. We got back with a little extra time to spare.
I would highly recommend using Active Movement.

This was by far one of the best decisions I have made in a long time. Not only did we have a great time, Albert’s customer service is amazing. It is not to often that you come across someone who is genuinely interested in ensuring that you have nothing less than an excellent time while using their product. I do not write reviews very often, but I was so IMPRESSED with Albert and his bikes that I had to take some time to show my appreciation. My wife, 2 friends and myself decided to do this just on a whim, and we cannot wait to go back and do it again. We picked up the bikea in Marina del Rey, and went north througj Venice, and past Santa Monica. We used the bikes manually, and a little pedal assist on our initial trip, but then on our way back, after eating lunch we were all about using full electric mode! It was so great being able to ride with out having to do any work! Like I said before, we cannot wait to go back and do this again!!!

This is our third time renting an electric bike from this establishment and our best ride yet. We picked up our bikes from a Marina Del Rey parking lot instead of the Santa Monica location. This saved us 45 minutes on our ride to Redondo since we always ride south and it allowed us to avoid the busy street area on Washington Blvd.
The bikes are easy to ride and the service is always top notch. I used leg power mostly on the way to Redondo and some electricity on the way back. It’s always a nice rush to be able to pass any biker on the path at will. I had plenty of battery left upon return.
The weather was perfect even in late November and the path was not too crowded. We stopped in Manhattan Beach and Redondo Pier for refreshments and lunch. We also visited the Rendondo family fun center at the boardwalk where there was a shooting gallery. I paid a dollar to shoot out the red star and to everyone’s surprise was successful. But instead of just handing me a «dumb» prize, the operator called a supervisor to verify the shot as if I had won some big hand in Vegas. Then he signaled to the cashier who had to call another person to retrieve the prize.
The prize turned out to be a 4.5 foot tall Teddy bear. My wife and I busted out in laughter as we struggled to tell them we came here on bikes. After claiming our prize and walking around the boardwalk a bit with a giant teddy bear, we had to figure out a way to transport the bear home on our bikes (I’ll try to post a picture). My wife rode behind me to ensure the bear was «safe» and she laughed the whole ride back to Marina Del Rey.

Great and friendly service. Albert runs the business and is very client focused. I will recommend to all my friends to try for something fun and different. Next time I’m in SM, I will rent again from Albert.

Bikes are in great shape and fun to ride. 13 year old son, 16 year old daughter and myself had a fun ride up and down the beach. Will not hesitate to rent again!

I learned about active movement from a 2 hour deal on Groupon. I had some time to kill on the morning of my arrival, and figured this would be a great way to start off my trip. Since I did have more than two hours, I contacted Albert to find out if additional time was possible. He pointed me to the specials on the companies website, and informed me of a full day special that better fit my needs.
Albert texted me about 10 minutes to confirm, and I met him on the Venice Pier. There is a parking lot there for $ 9 per day, which was really convenient. Albert patiently instructed me on how the pedal assist feature worked. I had not ridden a bike in years, and he took the time to work with me, which I appreciated. The rental came with a helmet, a bag to store my items, and a lock. Albert also gave me some options of where I could bike to since I was not familiar with the area. I ended up taking the bike path north past Santa Monica to the Palisades area. Spent some time at the beach, and then went back. On the way I stopped to have something to eat and walk around. There were a lot of places to park the bike. Albert even told me about a place that has free bike valet.
When I was done, I simply sent Albert a text and let him know that I was back. My entire trip took about 4 hours, but it was nice that I had to option of keeping the bike for a full day. If you are contemplating renting from Active Movement, this is a great option, and you will enjoy yourself. I will definitely rent from here again on my next trip. Just a tip, go in the early morning in the summertime. Venice and Santa Monica will come alive through the duration of your trip.

Exceptional customer service in any industry is almost extinct in this day and age and I think Albert is a T-​Rex in a business you least expect someone to surprise you.
For my wife’s 40^th birthday I wanted to plan a special day and thought part of it would be fun with an electric bike along the boardwalk so I called around to reserve a couple bikes. Albert quickly recognized how special our day was and went out of his way to arrange a special drop off at our hotel! He was personable and patient and took time to teach us all the ropes (even though one of us was pretty clumsy). We spent the day with them. Rode them to Venice, lunch, a spa, afternoon cocktails… Good times. And return drop off? Again blew my mind, he had us bring them back to our hotel at any point by the evening and leave them with the valet and everything would be handled.
The bikes we fantastic, the service was phenomenal and as far as my wife’s 40^th went… Well we ate 5star, we stayed high end and not one person that weekend impressed me more than Albert and Active Movement. thanks for making it special.

My friend visited from out of town and my cousin recommended that we rented bikes and ride around the beaches.
I went on Unilocal and found Albert’s e-​bike rental business. Called and set up an appointment. He was very patient with setting up a time with me.
When we met up with him he had us set up with the bikes and adjusted the seats if needed. He was very knowledgable about the area and suggested places to go.
It was extremely fun using the electric bike.
I would definitely book with Albert again the next time I’m in Venice.

Had a great time riding e-​bikes from santa monica to hermosa beach pier. Albert is a great guy who really cares about his customers. I will definitely be back again. I like that you get some exercise while riding these electric bikes in pedal-​assist mode. Or when you tire you can switch over to TAG mode and use all power (no pedaling required). VEry fun day out.

Highly recommend. Albert was great. He gave us clear instructions on how to use the bikes before we left, and even rode down to the beach with us to make sure we were comfortable on the bikes. Also, he met us way down in Manhattan Beach and swapped out our batteries as advertised, while we were having lunch. I didn’t even know he was there other than the text message he sent me when it was done. We had a blast. eBiking down the coast is a great experience and I highly recommend it to both locals and visitors alike. A++.

My boyfriend took me here as a surprise for my birthday! This was the BEST. Everyone needs to try it. The bikes had the options to ride normally, add a bit of motor power with pedaling that gets you up to 10mph, or (our favorite) the option to switch solely to battery power and get up to 20mph! It was such a rush! Not only is the feeling on the bikes incredible, but we got to ride through Santa Monica, Venice, Marina Del Rey, AND Manhattan Beach. A great way to see a lot of the coast– I’m definitely coming back with out of town visitors. Also, the guys at the store were so helpful, friendly, and chill– they made the experience even more enjoyable. You NEED to try this.

This was an experience for all ages! Took the LA beach tour and had so much fun using the all electric mode! The learning curve was short and we were zooming in no time!
The experience was seamless from start to finish. The staff member we rented the bikes from and lead the tour had us ready to go within a few mins of arriving, and he have suggestions about places we could go after the tour to further explore the area.
Must do for anyone visiting the LA area!

Our group rented four bikes from Active Movement on a Saturday. Picking up the bikes went smoothly and we were on the road within 5 minutes. The bikes themselves are so much fun to ride. We were able to cover a ton of ground during a four-​hour rental. I loved taking the bikes down to the beach and riding along the strand. I found easiest access to the beach by heading down the road just south of the Santa Monica pier.
Here’s a little rider tip for you: Use the TAG mode. The PAS (Pedal-​Assist) mode only allows you to reach about 10 – 12 MPH, but in TAG mode you can go much faster without even pedaling. When pedaling and giving full throttle in TAG mode, I was easily able to keep up with cars. Try both modes, but I have a feeling you’ll also thing TAG is the way to go.

I’m an LA local and was looking to do some bike tour around the Santa Monica and Venice area. I chose this one because it looked like it had a great route. I also liked how it incorporated today’s technology with documenting your experience with a smart phone/​tablet.
Booking was really easy and Albert was quick with his response and scheduling. We first met at the IZIP store on Main street in Santa Monica as we got our electric bikes. I feel privileged that I was the first one to take the tour as he literally just launched his business.
The price for this tour is right on the money. You get an electric bike for 2.5−3hrs and see all the best areas within Santa Monica and Venice. The bikes are pretty cool because you can pedal if you want and if you wanna rest you can rely on the bike to do the work!
I don’t want to give too much away but it was a great combination of well known landmarks/​sights with seeing where and how locals live. Think of this experience as having a buddy or local to show you all the places to go, rather than some tour where a guy blabs historical facts all afternoon. If I was a total tourist to LA, I would probably just do the tourist things by foot or maybe via bike. But with this, you’re able to see 50−60% more via bike. Not to mention, you’re getting sunshine and exercise.
Highlights were probably the bike path right on the beach, along with the Venice Canals! LA is so overwhelming! This is an effortless tour where you you just follow the leader and see the sights without having to worry about a map or parking or anything else. It’s also right up your alley if you’re into social media, photos etc. So you can show your friends all the places you’re going by bike in just one afternoon.
I would recommend this experience to anyone looking to see Santa Monica and/​or Venice. Especially if you would like to be efficient with your time in one afternoon. Again, this is coming from a local. I do suggest doing this on a weekday rathen than a weekend so it’s not so busy. Thanks again Albert for showing me the best of Santa Monica and Venice.
