Dream Cakes

Frequent patron of this Santa Fe asset! This review is long over due. (new Unilocal’er)
I have tried pretty much everything on the menu as well as my Bf and kids. The man behind the counter (the owner?) who has been there everytime I have gone in is always very cordial. He offers us samples of the frosting even though he probably recognizes us as regulars. My kids usually «sample» the majority of the frostings everytime.
I appreciate how the cup cakes are kept in an air tight container and seem to be fresher than if they were in a large case or out in the open.
The cakes are a little pricey but the size makes up for it. Also I am sure they don’t run their business on volume sales. We usually buy 3 – 4 cakes and cut them up and get to sample all the varieties.
Will be back, again and again.

I am incredibly happy I found this place! After lunch, my boyfriend and I decided to walk downtown for a bit. I decided I wanted something for dessert and quickly referred to Unilocal.Dreamcakes seemed to be highly rated, so on our way we went to find my cupcake!
It was very simple to find, and we were quickly greeted with a warm smile. The owner asked if we had ever been there and then offered us some icing samples. We were sold.
Though it was a hard decision, I decided to go with the Cookie Monster. It was love at first bite. The cake was incredibly moist. It had a consistency of which I had never experienced before. It felt as though there were very fine sugar crystals in the cake! What is this sorcery? But it was absolutely delicious and not too sweet. These cupcakes are very rich and I only managed to have two fork fills before I decided to save the rest for later. They were packaged in cute Chinese carry out looking boxes. We stopped at the casino on our way home and you bet I took my Chinese carry out cupcake box inside! No way was I going to leave it in the car and let it melt. Once home, I took a bite every couple of hours. Heaven in every single bite. I will definitely be back!

The best part of this cupcake experience was how creative the flavors are. Great for kids and it’s right off the plaza in the mall. One of the few kid friendly spots. The service was very friendly and accommodating. The fellow seemed happy we were there.

My favorite cupcakes ever! They cost a pretty penny, but it is well worth it for the smooth, delicious, homemade treats. Everything is made from scratch, and you can taste it. They use real fruit in their cupcakes: I have had both the raspberry and the strawberry shortcake. The cake is just moist enough and the frosting is sweet, but not overpoweringly so. Come get your share before they move to Hawaii in a month!

Sweet, smooth. Smells so good. Echoes out into the plaza. The service is efficient and they have cute décor. Love the packaging: no cupcake wrapper, just a squared away in wax paper. Easy and convenient.

Hands down the best cupcakes you’ll ever have in your entire life. The founders are moving in about 4 months, so hopefully someone buys it to keep it going because it is a Santa Fe must. With their creamy frosting and wide variety of flavors, I end up bringing nine or ten home after each New Mexico trip for my friends. Also, they sell out quickly so the best time to go is at noon. Hope you are able to make it here!

We saw the sign for Dream Cakes while we were walking around the plaza and we decided to stop in for a pre-​lunch snack.
Walking in, there are fake cupcakes everywhere that serve as the shop’s decorations and at first glance, I didn’t see any real cupcakes on display anywhere. Concerned about the freshness of their cupcakes, I inquired about whether the cupcakes were made fresh daily. After I asked a second time, the man behind the counter responded «yes». So then, I was trying to figure out where the fresh cupcakes were. When a customer came in and ordered one, the man behind the counter went to a stack of Tupperware containers and pulled one out. Hmmm… I thought that was a little odd for a storefront (–1 star).
I think he sensed my skepticism because he mentioned to me that they are the only 5-​star cupcake shop in Santa Fe on Unilocal.So, I figured I should try one. I went with my standard red velvet. After paying $ 4.87 with tax (–1star), he pulled one out of the Tupperware and handed it to me.
The icing was piped high in the wrapper so the first few bites were very sweet! Once I got to the cake, things went downhill. The cupcake was so thick that it was difficult to eat. I shared it with a couple of people and we had trouble getting it all down. I can’t remember the last time I didn’t finish a cupcake but we weren’t able to finish this one. The consistency just wasn’t right (–1 star).
Having lived in NYC and LA (and with the other people being from Chicago, Atlanta, and DC), we’re used to paying for overpriced food. But nearly $ 5 for a cupcake is absurd! This place clearly preys on the Santa Fe visitors, which isn’t cool. I much preferred the visits to the chocolate shops in Santa Fe over this place.

Probably the best cupcakes I’ve ever had (I’m a huge fan of Sprinkles and Susie Cakes). What’s more impressive is the friendliness of Joe, the guy who works here. He’s just so warm and talkative and doesn’t pressure anyone into buying anything. I believe it’s his wife who makes the cupcakes in the mornings and he sells whatever she makes throughout the day (the menu is ever-​changing). He even has free samples of the frostings to keep customers engaged while staring at the offerings.
I also really liked the decorations around the shop. The place is pretty small, but it’s cozy and not at all cramped. There’s plenty of wall art and sayings about cupcakes, which I believe his daughter picked out for the shop. There’s even a chalkboard where you can indicate if you’re into the cake itself or the frosting (as of now, frosting is the clear winner!).
I ordered the chocolate lover’s cupcake and the red velvet. The amount of detail that goes into presentation is impressive. Definitely felt homemade and I loved every bite of them both! Rich frosting, but oh-​so-​good.
Pricing starts at around $ 4.50/cupcake, but it’s worth every single penny. Do yourself a favor and check this place out!

Best service, best cupcakes, hands down.
I had an experience dealing with Joe and his shop on a business trip to Albuquerque a few weeks ago. I had some free time so I drove up to Santa Fe to wander about the town center. I stumbled upon the shop in my hours long quest to find both a bakery and a bathroom. The mall complex Dream Cakes is located in has a bathroom, it’s employees only. I just casually asked if the place had a bathroom and he completely trusted me with his ONLY key, not even knowing whether or not I was some sort of crazy key thief or not.
It goes without saying that after he LITERALLY saved my life, we became fast friends. I asked if I could take a few shots of his place for Unilocal and he was super helpful, even posed for a picture with me. When I told him I was just shooting through from out of town, he was super nice. He let me have as many free frosting samples as I liked, and we even watched an episode of Psych together after I bought a few cupcakes.
The dude and the food were amazing, the cupcakes were surprisingly moist and buttery, even though this was closing time and they had been sitting around presumably for the better part of the day. The frosting was to die for, which explains the appeal of the free samples. These are not casual cupcakes, be prepared to commit and get deliciousness all over your face and hands. Worth every bite, and I will most definitely be stopping by again if I am ever in the Santa Fe area.

We chose this place for our wedding cupcakes and were not disappointed! The man working that day (husband to the baker herself) was super sweet to the kids and let us sample different icings before making our selections. After learning it was for our wedding, he packed them up with extra tissue all around so none of them would get tipped over on the drive back to our wedding location. They were delicious and beautiful in presentation. Most importantly, our kids and guests loved them and so did us newlyweds! :)

Scolded and humiliated my 9 year old daughter.
My kids and I saw the sign in the plaza advertising this store and decided we had to go buy some cupcakes! Upon entering, a man working there offered us a sample of icing. My daughter turned to find me and ask if that was okay. The man then snapped at her that if she was leaving, she couldn’t have any. I thought he must be teasing, so I walked to the counter and went to get her a sample, at which point he snatched the samples away and put them behind the counter. He then told my daughter «it’s all your fault. You were going to leave and not buy anything.» What?!
I was so dumbfounded and honestly confused that I shuffled her out of the store and simply told him that we had, in fact, planned on purchasing cupcakes but now we certainly wouldn’t.
I’m at a total loss to explain what happened and why any person would treat a customer that way — never mind a little girl excited about getting a treat. My daughter was hurt and sad and frankly scared from the encounter. I’m just livid.

My husband and I have come to Dream Cakes A LOT over the last two years since we moved to New Mexico (Albuquerque). The cupcakes are out of this world, you can order a custom cupcake cake for special occasions, and you can call ahead to see what flavors are available. Since we SPECIFICALLY go to Santa Fe just for this place, we call up, place our order a day or two in advance and roll in to pick up our goodies (which freeze VERY well, by the way). My husband loves the German chocolate cake, I’m all about the lemon… and take a chance on the green chile corn bread cupcake!

These cupcakes are not only beautiful, they are probably the best cupcakes I’ve had in Santa Fe. They are delicious, moist, and huge! They have a great variety of flavors and the guy that works behind the counter is quite friendly. I’ve been here a few times now, but still can’t understand why they don’t invest in a nice display case. The little shop itself is poorly decorated and all the cupcakes are stored in big plastic containers. So you can’t really look at the cupcakes through a case, you have to ask to see them. If you can get over that, the cupcakes are sooo good!

The service was friendly and there were free frosting samples. Anyone can win me over with free frosting.
The cupcakes were beautifully decorated and I love that they had some more exotic flavors than your typical cupcake shop.
My husband and I tried 4 cupcakes: strawberry shortcake, lavendar, chocolate peanut butter, and coconut. The texture of the cakes was not good at all. Very heavy, dense, and stale tasting. I barely even ate the cake part of the cupcake. But the frostings were awesome and since I love frosting so much, that made the cupcakes enjoyable for me.
I really should give this place 3 stars because a cupcake place with cupcakes that have a terrible texture shouldn’t get 4 stars. But oddly enough, I like this place and would go back next time I’m in Santa Fe.

I got the old fashion and it was amazing. Soft and fluffy vanilla cake and dreamy creamy chocolate frosting. Glad I found this place!

Oh my goodness! My lucky day. Bought the last two cupcakes (red velvet). Moist and yummy. The frosty was the perfect touch and texture.

Dream Cakes is a cute little spot that’s hidden from the main plaza (we happened to stumble upon it), but worth the search. I was so happy to read GLUTEN FREE in the window, even if there was only one featured flavor a day. The owner was very sweet and offered us frosting samples (Key Lime is out of this world).
I ordered a GF chocolate cake with Chocolate Buttercream frosting and my husband tried the Key Lime Cupcake. The presentation is spectacular and eye catching for sure; however, they’re definitely a fork and knife kind of cupcake. Their shape is quite square with a very long «torso» and a helmet full of frosting. Mine was very dry and crumbly, but quite tasty. He enjoyed the Key Lime and mentioned that it was very intense and sweet… then actually fell into a food coma shortly after. ;)
I recommend eating these a la mode in order for ice cream to soak into the cake to make it moist/​soft. I even took some of the frosting and spread it on the rest of the cupcake so that each bite was consistent!
Also, not impressed with how they are stored in the shop. He needs to invest in glass cases, not have them presented in tupperware. I would go back to try another flavor, and have to eat it immediately so it doesn’t become even more dry. I’ll be sure to bring my own plasticware though, so I can enjoy that rich frosting on every single bite.

Okay where do I begin with this, well went to visit Santa Fe for the day and had just finished eating lunch and was looking for a wonderful dessert to treat myself right, we came upon a lovely cupcake boutique place called Dream Cakes, I was so excited as everything that my eyes were eyeballing looked amazing and so pretty :) as I saw a man inside and I reached for the door and he said, «Im not OPEN…10 more minutes» I looked at the time and it said 12:14 and hours of operation indicated 12:00 so if they changed their hours they need to reflect the new hours… I was thinking okay I guess I will wait as these cupcakes are truly «Dreamy» & wall marketed I will wait!
These gentlemen who were sitting down finishing up their lunch said, «Is he not gonna open for YOU? I said, „he said 10 more mins“ they replied „thats horrible!, well you might want to check out next door as they have good icecream“ I said thanks guys, but Im not much of a icecream kind of a person, I will see if this is worth my wait, but Thank YOU»
He must of noticed that the gentlemen were talking about him as he opened up but didnt say, «Thank YOU for waiting I am ready»…he just opened the door… I asked him if he was the owner and he said well kind of, my wife does the baking and I help her… WOW does he help his wife run the business INTO THE GROUND what a silly donkey he is as so many would love to live the American dream and own their own business!
He opened up shortly after and started to attain people skills and mentioning the different unique flavors, the Dream Cakes have beautiful presentation and they were really good, the price is on the high side, however I will pay for anything that is delicious in taste as well as has great marketing! All in all lovely Cupcake boutique they just need to have an energetic young girl working in helping cultivate business!

Screw it! I am giving this five stars as this is one of the best cup cakes in usa… rivals Seattle’s trophy cup cakes. Mmm definitely try the blood orange and coconut samoa! They have other great cup cakes… oh and the shape is more rigid than your normal shape.

As the owner claims, they’re top-​heavy cupcakes. For me, waaaaaaay too much frosting. The ratio of frosting: cake is completely off, as I am a diehard Sprinkles fan. I ended up going right before closing, so the cupcakes weren’t fresh either. Maybe the key here is to go first thing in the AM, not in the afternoon. I’d rather spend less $ and get a smaller serving at Dulce.
