I attended the Dance Prisims concert on March 22, 2014 and had a wonderful evening. The new conductor is delightful to watch. He told the audience of the program for next year and every concert sounds divine. I attended the talk before the performance, which was very informative. If you haven’t yet attended a Symphony performance with the new maestro, Daniel Stewart, I highly recommend you do so. His energy and love of music is contagious. He brings out the best from the orchestra.

The 3÷22÷14 Dance Prisms concert was programmed with a great combination of pieces by Bartok, Bach, Ives and Stravinsky. The pieces in this concert called for a pared-down instrumentation. The group played with a nice, silky sound as well as with moments of lively oomph! I’m grateful to have had the chance to experience Ives’ Unanswered Question. During Stravinsky’s Pulcinella trombonist Michael Cushing warmed my trombone player’s soul with some hearty smears; the low strings ably responded with some romping of their own. During the last moments of Pulcinella I was left drinking up trumpet player Warren Bartold’s sweet, liquid, ringing sound. Thank you, SC County Symphony! Looking forward to hearing more SCCS concerts.

Under the direction of new Maestro Daniel Stewart, the Santa Cruz County Symphony has improved drastically, making it the best orchestral ensemble north of L.A. and south of San Francisco. The programming is tantalizing and the music takes your breath away. The new conductor, after only 3 concerts, has transformed Santa Cruz into a must destination for classical music lovers.
