I am passionate about relaxing muscles and minds with massage based in Deep Tissue and Swedish Massage, with elements of Acupressure, Lymphatic Drainage Massage, Pre-​natal Massage, Reflexology, Reiki, Shiatsu.

Deep tissue work is wonderful for sore muscles, especially back/​neck pain, shoulder, and hip issues. It can also help reduce stress, headaches, trouble sleeping and much more.

Lymphatic Massage is a much lighter pressure technique which supports the immune system, clears swelling, detoxes the body, encourages good digestion and reduces pain.

History

Established in 2008.

Reiki began my introduction to energy and bodywork several years before starting Santa Cruz Bodywork. I attended massage school in Massachusetts with a short study-​abroad stint in Costa Rica. Upon moving to Santa Cruz, my massage career took on a life of its own and has blossomed and grown into Santa Cruz Bodywork. In 2011 I moved my practice into the Center for Health in the Branciforte Plaza building, a suite of wonderful and talented health practitioners.

The human body has always intrigued me. From a young age, the logic and science behind the way our muscles and bones work together captivated me and made me want to pursue orthopedics. As I learned more about the invasive nature of orthopedic surgery, I was unsure that Western medical school was right for me. I received Reiki attunements and loved using energy healing. After graduating from college, I pursued learning more about healing through bodywork. I have now studied Deep Tissue Massage as well as pre-​natal, and many other modalities. Currently I am pursuing coursework to become certified as a Lymphedema Therapist.

I was worried she couldn’t dig deep enough in deep tissue work, but she far surpassed my expectations. She was friendly, professional, and excellent in her skills.

I’ve been coming to see Miriam lately for some Deep Tissue/​Sports massages, and I can honestly say that I love what Miriam does for my body, and I feel a lot better afterwards. I like to weightlift a lot so my muscles are constantly sore and tight and Miriam keeps them loose and ready to go for another workout! I highly recommend her, she had soft hands and a golden touch!

I wish I could give Michael five thousand stars. He is the best massage therapist and I will never go to anyone but him. I have a very tight body and back with lots of tense spots. I cant even describe how he moves his hands its like so fluid and amazing. my body feels so great. He knows so much about the body right now, im pregnant and he made me feel so comfortable and relaxed i cant reccomend him enough!

Came in for a massage while we were on vacation, and will absolutely return! Michael made some conversation in the beginning, trying to understand my needs and definition of deep tissue massage… Turns out, I just wanted a Swedish, but he quickly adapted and put me into deep relaxation. His extensive understanding of muscle groups and reflexology made this experience the best massage I have ever had. I was surprised by the business itself; it’s located in a medical office group, not a spa setting. But I honestly think the medical knowledge and background had a lot to do with the quality of touch I received. Most of michael’s gestures were simple and each touch was purposeful. He really did listen to my muscles and body; he noticed things about the way I use my muscles that I was not even conscious of myself.
I would go again. I felt cared for, safe, and trusted his knowledge. Michael even gave me a few minutes longer time, since I believe we were his last appointments of the day.

Michael is wickedly talented. His attention to detail with muscular therapy is excellent. When my treatment is over, I feel much lighter and open in the muscle groups he’s focused on.
Sometimes I request a full body treatment, and he does very well with that. My absolute favorite is to have him focus on a problem area — because the results are dramatic and fantastic.

Michael was terrific. I’d been dealing with stiffness in my lower back and neck for 3 months, and he absolutely melted it! I’m going back. I want to stay on top of it rather than suffer.
He’s a big guy, so he has power to put into the places that need it, but he’s very gentle: a Gentle Giant. His voice is soft and he clearly respects his clients’ boundaries and wishes. I have saliva glands that get inflamed if they’re touched. He listened when I asked that he avoid them, and remembered when he got to working on my head and neck. That’s rare, I can tell you.
He obviously knows a lot: he used a lot of different methods, but the session flowed smooth as silk. I could feel the difference in my body at the end.

Michael gave me a fantastic massage– strong and skillful. He helped so much with my recurrent work related issues, working deep to loosen knots that seemed to have been there for years. I feel relaxed and refreshed after seeing him.
Michael was very professional and also really knowledgeable. He clearly understood exactly what was going on with my body, working not only to fix my issues, but to advise me on how to avoid the specific shoulder problems I get from computer work. He was also great at working deeply on difficult areas (eg shoulders) but more lightly on other areas where I have a lot of sensitivity (eg forearms), focusing on stretching as well as working muscles loose. I felt very comfortable the whole time.
I will definitely be going back to see Michael again and often– I feel amazing even days later.

Miriam has restored my faith in massage therapists. I have a chronic muscular condition, and have been hurt, or negatively evaluated by other massage therapists. I’ve avoided massage for many years because of this, but recently decided to try Miriam based upon her stellar Unilocal reviews. I explained my needs and sensitivities, and she honored them, making me feel relaxed and comfortable throughout my session. She is very professional and focused on her work. Having a quiet (non-​chatty) session was also a huge plus to me. I am so excited to have found someone that I feel comfortable with! Miriam Janove is one of the best massage therapists I’ve visited. While I lived in Santa Cruz, I saw her multiple times a year, and was never disappointed. She has strong, capable hands that respond well to the body’s musculature. She is adept at finding particular points of tension and releasing them. I especially loved the results of the lymphatic drain massage and the deep tissue massages.
Miriam’s office is pleasant and relaxing. She makes good choices of background music and other touches for general ambience. Her manner is professional, friendly, and intuitive. I wish I still lived in Santa Cruz!

Miriam is a skilled and empathic massage practitioner. I’ve received a couple of massages from her and always leave the table feeling relaxed and centered. I am so glad I decided to start receiving weekly massages from Miriam several months ago!
With Miriam’s quick acquaintance to my body’s kinks and how they best respond, I’ve been able to release tensions I’d thought I’d have to live with. Plus, the variety of techniques she has up her sleeve are unbelievable: whenever I come with something new and wacky, she has just the thing for it. When I had caught a cold, her lymphatic drainage relieved my congestion tremendously. When I’d been traveling for two weeks, she helped me recover and «come home to my body» much faster and easier than usual. Whether I’ve been exercising all week, or not at all in over a month, Miriam’s talent and attentiveness always meets my needs for therapy and relaxation.
