Built in 1904 by Joseph Neal of Oakland for the Christian Adventists. It later became the Assemblies of God’s German Elim Church. Today it is a conservative Catholic Church.

As a tip to loyal Roman Catholics, this chapel is no longer recognized by the Diocese, but is now a SSPX chapel.
The non-​schismatic celebration of the Tridentine Mass is now celebrated at Five Wounds Portuguese National Church in downtown San Jose.

The place I call home.
This is as far as I know, the only place in the Bay Area (not including SF) where one can enjoy the Tridentine Mass (1962).
Here you can feel the reverence, the devotion, the strength and the piety intrinsic to the Church; a church of ancient traditions, that carries on it the beautiful light of the only Truth, which is Love.

Last Sunday my wife and I were in the South Bay. We would normally have attended St Ann Chapel for an Anglican Mass, but 11 a.m. was too late for the other time commitments we had that day, so I suggested we look for an Indult in the San Jose/​Santa Clara area. We found the Oratory online, surprisingly enough, and it turned out to be barely 5 minutes from her parents’ home.
We attended the 9:30 Mass. There was a reasonable number of people in the congregation, though the small chapel wasn’t crowded. I’m guessing that the celebrant was Fr Ottonello, the chaplain of the Oratory; his accent was difficult to place, but sounded as though it could be either Spanish or Italian.
Although I’m a great fan of traditional Catholic liturgy, I have to say that in general, the celebration validated a number of criticisms of pre-​conciliar liturgy. The rushed and peculiarly-​pronounced Latin, the mumbled and elided responses of the servers (God forbid the congregation should make any response!), the ignored rubrics (where were the other 2 collects and postcommunions? We were in the octave of the Assumption and it was the feast of St Joachim, for crying out loud!), the complete absence of music or chant…
On the other hand, Fr Ottonello’s devotion was apparent. His homily, although delivered in imperfect English, was ardent and heartfelt, and there was something very charming and touching to witness in his struggle to express himself in what was probably a third or fourth language. And following the post-​Eucharistic devotions, he led the congregation in the «Salve Regina” – to a simplex tone I was unfamiliar with – and couldn’t contain himself from effusing afterward that it touched his heart and was beautiful.
Of course, I’m comparing this experience to Mass at St Margaret Mary in Oakland, which is a much bigger place; and this was a Low Mass, not Solemn High, so perhaps you should take it with a pinch of salt. Nevertheless, I strongly prefer either the Solemn High Tridentine Mass or a full-​tilt Anglican Missal liturgy to what we experienced here; if you just want to get your Sunday obligation over and done with, on the other hand, this may just punch your ticket.

The Oratory of Our Mother of Perpetual Help, Institute of Christ the King Sovereign Priest is located on Homestead Road in Santa Clara. This is an Oratory meaning it is a place of prayer other than a parish that is set aside by ecclesiastical authority for prayer and celebration of the Mass. The Mass celebrated here is the Tridentine Mass which celebrates the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass and all the sacraments exclusively in the Traditional Latin Rite of the Roman Catholic Church within the Diocese of San Jose under His Excellency, Bishop Patrick Joseph McGrath. The entire Mass is said in Latin with the exception of the Gospel and Homily.
Both Men and Women dress modestly in their Sunday Best at Mass. Women are to wear veils over their hair but not covering their face. If you do not have your own veil they are available to borrow during service, upon entering the foyer of the Oratory one will find a basket of veils for borrow. My veil was a gift purchased at Ave Maria in Cupertino. In the foyer one will find either a red or blue missal with the Latin-​English translation of the Tridentine Mass. It is encouraged to be seated early for this Roman Rite of Mass. Its complex to follow at first but the Latin-​English Missal helps. The actual building is rather small. There are wooden pews. The alter is made up of white marble, the front of the alter: on the left is the Alpha, in the middle a picture of a lamb, on the right the Omega. There is a beautiful tabernacle and above it a wooden crucifix. Incense is used during this Mass. In a Tridentine Mass there is no holding of hands during the «Our Father» or shaking hands and saying «Christ’s Peace Be With You.» Its a more solemn form of Mass. Although the Latin Mass dates back to 150 AD, the advent of the New Mass (Novus Ordo Missae) has been around for almost 40 years. The New Mass is what most Roman Catholics in America are familiar with as the Tridentine Mass is said in very few places post Vatican II. This is the second time in my life that I have attended Traditional Latin Mass. I wore my veil inside the Oratory. I kneeled for my Holy Communion. After Mass I met a few of the people in the community. I also had the privilege of meeting Fr. Jean-​Marie Moreau. I look forward to attending more masses here.

* Sunday 8, 9:30, 11AM & 5:30PM
* High Mass Schedule: (each Sunday at the 5:30PM Mass except on the Last Sunday it is at the 8AM Mass)
* Benediction will follow the 5:30PM Mass on the First Sunday of each month.
* Tuesday 10 AM followed by Devotion to Our Mother of Perpetual Help
* Friday 6:30PM followed by Devotion to the Sacred Heart
* Mass for a Holy Day is generally at 6:30PM unless stated otherwise
* First Saturdays 10AM
