There are a number of taco trucks roaming the streets of Orange County, parked curbside somewhere or at various venues. Just a handful, however, serves up really good food. I happen to think El Rincon del Sabor is one of them. Located on the corner of E. 5th St. & Mortimer St.(near Main St.) in Santa Ana. Besides tacos, they also prepare other menu items including tortas(sandwiches), quesadillas(tortilla and cheese), alambres(shish kabob) and pambrazos(white bread sandwich). I tried the carne asada and the tripas tacos. The carne asada was grilled just right: tender, juicy and flavorful. There is so much more flavor to meat that has been cooked in its own fat, especially pig fat. I am certain they make good use of it here to cook its meats and grill its vegetables and onions. The tripas was even better! You could tell the entrails were cooked and cleaned first. But it’s how long they grilled it afterward that was the key its success. They were grilled long enough to give them that crunchy texture. It’s one of the few things that actually taste better when it is grilled a bit longer. Crunchy and flavorful! The best tripas I’ve had on a taco! The tripas taco is $ 2. All other tacos are only $ 1 everyday! Everything made-to-order. Cash only.

After I ordered a torta cubana at the strong recommendation of the woman working, I realized I may have gone to the wrong food truck. Just around the corner is La Chiva Torta which had about 15 people in front of it eating and a 5 star rating on Unilocal.I was the only person at El Rincon. Lucky for me the torta was top notch. Pastor, Chorizo, ham, and all the fixins for $ 5. This was a great torta. This entire little area is a taco truck lover’s dream apparently — Tacos Ruben y Mulitas, El Rincon, and La Chiva.

I came down here on another Unilocalers recommendation to try«La Chiva Torta» he claims to be the best tortas ahogadas outside of Jalisco, Mexico, unfortunately for me the truck was nowhere to be found, I later come to find out they don’t work on Tuesday, my time was wasted, or was it?. As I follow the nose to the smell of grilled carne in the air I end up at the corner of 5th and Mortimer st., ah look El Rincon del Sabor(flavor at the corner) let’s see what they have, this is not your ordinary taco and burrito truck as they have a large selection of meats and a variety of items such as gorditas, huaraches, gringas, mulitas, pambazo. Alambres — Is a base of green bell peppers, onions, and ham, that is like stir fried or grilled on a flat top and combined with your choice of meat I chose carne asada then topped with a white melt-able cheese and in this case it was jack, and served with a stack of wonderful corn tortillas top it off with some salsa roja and it was delicious 4.5 –Stars Barbacoa — Barbacoa can be done with various meats but they use pork, traditionally it’s cooked in a fire pit, others will smoke or steam it. While this was not the best barbacoa I’ve had it was pretty good though it reminded me more of carnitas than barbacoa 3.5 –Stars Gringa — No I’m not talking about a «White Girl» but… that’s how it got it’s name!, a gringa made different ways depending on the area of Mexico your in could be a taco folded or rolled, or flat like what most consider a quesadilla, generally uses a flour tortilla and in this case two large flour tortillas, then filled with a melt-able white cheese they use jack, filled with al pastor and pieces of pineapple. Now in Mexico al pastor is cooked on a trompo or vertical spit with a piece of pineapple at the top, the pineapple representing the«Blonde Hair of a Gringa» and like all gringa’s they’re delicious! 4 –Stars So a trip was not wasted as I found a new place and some good food
