Act3 Productions

Had an enjoyable time at the opening night for Dogfight. Kudos to the cast and crew — y’all did an outstanding job.

Just saw the production of Guys and Dolls-​what a stellar performance and group of actors. I can’t wait to go back for closing weekend and every other production they put on-​maybe I’ll even audition one day :)

I just watched Hairspray Jr. for the second time, and had to come on Unilocal to rave about Act3.
On Act3… Act3 Productions is a community theatre in metro Atlanta covertly located behind the Trader Joe’s in Sandy Springs Plaza. It was founded about a decade ago, but has only had a space since 2009. If you weren’t looking for it you probably wouldn’t even know it existed. Just take the small roadway between the Five Guys and Palm Beach Tan, and the theatre will be on your right. There is ample parking!
The blackbox theatre isn’t large, but it is incredibly intimate. The administrators and staff really add to the vibe as well. From their warm greetings and hearty discussions, it is clear that they love what they do. That being said, intimacy is only one part of the equation. Act3 manages to have that AND talent. Also, this theatre gives back. Act3 prides itself on being an active participant in the Atlanta community. As a 501c3, the theatre regularly hosts workshops for kids, some of whom can’t afford them, does benefit shows, and helps feed the homeless.
On Hairspray… Hairspray Jr was the product of a mere three weeks of rehearsal, and featured teens ranging from 12 to 17. this play was so well-​acted, and easily one of the most moving children’s programs I’ve ever seen — and as sister to a thespian, I’ve seen my fair share. These kids doubled as singers and dancers, and gave every song both the vitality that we continue to associate with Hairspray, and the gravity of its real world context. They made me laugh to the antics of Corny Collins, awww to the lovesick pairing of Tracy and Link, and cry to the heartwarming rendition of Miss Maybelle’s «I Know Where I’ve Been». And I must not be the only one impressed by these kids; all six of their shows were sold out.
So if you have the time, give these lovely actors and producers a nod, and visit Act3! They are doing great things for this community, and I for one am excited to see how the adults fare in Ruthless next month.

As an actor and theater patron, I have had the privilege to participate with many community and professional theaters. However, I always feel like I’m home when I’m at Act3! Regardless of your level of talent, there is a place for you at Act3. Everyone is special and important and no one is left out! From children’s programs to youth improv to adult productions, it’s all at Act3 wrapped up with a perfect bow. If you love theater as an actor or patron of the arts, you owe it to yourself to get involved with Act3!

Full disclosure: I’m an Actor and a Sound Designer that has worked at Act 3. That said… I have to honestly say that everything I’ve been a part of there has been delightful. If you’re looking for grandiose… try a different theatre. But if you’re looking for quality productions in an intimate black box stage that utilizes some of the most talented artisans in this city, look no further. Behind Trader Joe’s on Roswell road– the location is fantastic too. I just had a really great date that I brought to their production of Sylvia and she loved it too. She mentioned after how it seemed like everybody knew each other like family.

There are several community theaters in metropolitan Atlanta, but none as professional as Act3 Productions. I’ve worked here as an actor and attended productions as a patron and it’s consistently my favorite theatre in terms of quality and production value. When you’re at Act3, you become part of the family. As a Sandy Springs resident and local actor, I’m proud that the arts are represented by this great company! Much love to the Drama Mamas! Xoxo
