Steele Hill Resort

This was the worst night I have ever experienced in a hotel. Horrible customer service, terrible cheap accommodations, and you can hear people in the next room talking. People partying all night like a frat house. We didn’t sleep at all, complained about the noise and staff didn’t believe us. They didn’t apologize once and wouldn’t move our room. I complained four times. We were debating just leaving in the middle of the night to drive home. I wish I could give this place zero stars. They took a beautiful piece of land and turned it into a tacky resort. What a horrible place. I’m so sad to see what corporate greed does to our pristine natural resources. If you’re an ignorant low roller this place is for you.

We were swindled into staying at this dump due to filling out a raffle at a Portland Pirates hockey game. I got a call from a woman saying I «won» the raffle which included a free trip. All I had to do was physically come to this place to pick up my airline vouchers. Since I was coming from Boston they told me they’d give me a free room and could stay over night. Once I got there I quickly realized it’s just a time share scam. They told me on check in that I’d have to sit through a 90 minute presentation the next morning and then I’d get my free airline tickets.
The room smelled like sewage. It was gross. We absolutely hated it here and couldn’t wait to leave. However we had to sit through the presentation or they said they’d charge my card for the stay in the sewage room. Fine. So we went to the «90 minute» presentation that was actually a 3 hour extreme pressure sales pitch. When I firmly told the guy at the end that I wasn’t buying into their timeshare, he seemed mad and just said, «WHY NOT?!». I said we’re done here, go get my airline tickets.
he came back with a folder full of useless junk. In order to use the «free» airline tickets you had to stay at one of their affiliated resorts at grossly inflated prices. So if the wife and I wanted to got to Miami, for instance on the «free» tickets and stay in a $ 200 a night hotel, well too bad. You see to fly to Miami we’d have to stay in one of their $ 500+ per night hotels. So in the end, no free airline tickets.
This place is a straight up scam and I’m astounded that the NH attorney general’s office hasn’t shut this place down yet or at least sent a letter about their bait and switch marketing tactics.

My family has been coming here for over ten years and we have seen a gradual decline in services and facilities over the last two years. This past stay was our «rock bottom» and reason we won’t be back. The pool– which is the entire reason we come with my three kids-​was «out of order» both days we were there. Apparently there were babies doing their business in the pool– I appreciate their taking care of it but wtf parents of babies??? Ok so not Steele Hill’s fault but it set the tone for our stay. Another complaint– the front desk asks for your cell phone #in case they need to get in touch with you. But they use it to call you to try to get you to go on a tour of their timeshare suites– not so nice to get this call while out enjoying our vacation with my family. We went during vacation week and their were kids everywhere and hardly any parents in sight.

Pros-​beautiful views, good fitness center, nice pools and hot tub
Cons-​awful restaurant, poor check in staff and bartender, bad customer service, poor quality toiletries. We were on the bottom floor and I think we had a family of elephants above our room. The rooms are stacked so you share an entrance door and even with the «do not disturb» sign on our door, the family above us screamed and stomped late into the night and early in the morning. This may be a great place for people with kids… but for people with no kids, I would not recommend it.

I’d like to give this place a 5. It’s a nice place, really. The room was really nice with granite counters, full kitchen, fire place, comfy furniture and of course the view is beautiful. The hiking trails are also a nice way to spend the day as well. It was super peaceful and quiet overall. Also I would come here again, but not on a weekday (our stay was for Tuesday to Thursday). On Wednesday apparently everything comes to a screeching stopp, though I imagine the weekends are probably fairly busy.
The cons: We were so excited to have breakfast, try the restaurant or order room service but our only full day we had the restaurant wasn’t open, the bar wasn’t open, we couldn’t order room service and breakfast was limited to bagels and convenience store food. Not the end of the world but after a day of hiking and a good swim some food would have been nice.
The pool area was really neat! Aside from what we nicknamed band-​aid island. We informed a guy testing the pool water but he just sort of looked at us like he didn’t care and said «ok?». Kind of gross.
For the price of the rooms it would have been cool not to see band-​aid island, be able to relax to some dinner, and not have to go through a labyrinth of stairs to the amenities.
Maybe I’m just hangry, the view is nice but if you come make sure you bring a cooler and hit a stair stepper before your stay ;)

We stayed in the new wing and had two rooms (on top of one another) with a full kitchen, and a breathtaking view. The indoor water park, ping-​pong, air hocky, games, etc. are great for kids. They have many activities and some hiking trails.
I would highly recommend it, especially if you have kids.

Stayed there for a wedding in the main lodge, old but very comfortable.
Would love to stay there again!

TERRIBLE MANAGEMENT– I have called the manager 4 times in almost 2 weeks. Left a VM and had the employee email her. She hasn’t cared to even call me back. I was excited to get my GF a night stay for Christmas and this hotel is to good to even call me back. I am sooo disappointed. Places like this should really try better for customer Serivce

We hated our stay here! The rooms were old, not update, the furniture was old and our non-​smoking room smelled like an ashtray. There were stairs everywhere! The resort was far away from everything. The pool was nice and the young people working the desk were very gracious and tried to help us with everything they could.

We had a great stay. The property is stunning. The townhouse was spacious and the kids felt at home. The animal show was fun and educational. The pool was a blast! What set it apart for me was at 11pm, with the kids fast asleep, us adults were looking for something to do. Jackie at the front desk happily sent Andy the maintenance man to open the area where we could pick out board and card games. Working in customer service before, I always appreciate experiencing amazing customer service. Will hopefully be back again next year! Kudos!

Went to Steele hill for a night away with my husband! Romantic getaway package came with dinner and chocolates. Restaurant was fantastic and he had short ribs and I had the maple chicken. Got dessert to go and the blueberry cheesecake was amazing with the blueberry wine we picked up at Hermits winery in near by Meredith. I believe they sell some of the wines in the new marketplace at the resort in the large amenities building. We stayed in a 1br suite in the east side. You have to drive up the hill to the larger pool (the west side) with the great water slide and roman spa but it’s not far and the side of the east resort we stayed in had a smaller pool inside with hot tub as we’ll! We liked being inside the east side with the restaurant attached. It’s a big resort and we will most likely stay two nights next time. Been to this resort a few times and it’s great how big the rooms are, most have large whirlpools –some rooms 1 person size, some with the larger 2 person. Love the balconies, can get some beautiful views! The south, east and west sides are very different so look into them all a bit before booking! The kitchens are stocked so you can bring food and cook which is fantastic! Can’t wait to plan my next trip-​maybe a girls weekend away-​plenty of room which is a big plus! Will be back!

Comfortable rooms well appointed with great beds and bathroom. We stayed in a 2 person Western suite but bigger suites with kitchens available if you want to cook or have a bigger family. We got food from a Market Basket in Titlton before driving to the resort and had a fridge and microwave available.
Indoor pool and spa pool is fantastic, something for both kids and adults. Had coffee dessert at the hilltop restaurant with equally scrumptious view of the lakes and mountains. Very quiet! Relaxing and a perfect get away only a 2 hour drive from Boston.

«Best Sunday Brunch in the Lakes Region”-FALSE. Don’t get sucked in like we did. Food in the warmers had definitely been sitting too long. Everything in them was dry and stale (potatoes, French toast, pancakes, crepes with canned blueberry topping that were all gooey and gross). The omelet and waffle stations were good, but that’s the only positive I have to say. Service needs some work. Waited 10 minutes for someone to offer coffee and take a drink order… OJ is an upcharge, mimosas are served with ice (ewww) and dirty plates sat on the table after the second trip to the buffet (because the first round was un-​edible, hence the trip to the omelet station). Two people, two mimosas each for $ 75 without tip was grossly overpriced for what we got. Will not be returning. The view, however, is spectacular.

Stopped in for a quick lunch not really knowing what to expect. The food was delicious. Such a cute cozy little place, will definitely be back when I’m in the area again!

I know a lot of the rooms have kitchenettes. That’s cool
But for those of us who don’t feel like cookin’, some bacon $ eggs on a Tuesday morning would be SO cool, without driving down the hill.
Other than that, pretty pleased.
(Like that you can buy a 6-​pack at the 7-​day shack on the premises)

My husband and I stayed at the Steel Hill Resort last weekend to celebrate our 5 year anniversary. We stayed 2 nights in a suite that had breathtaking views of the lakes. Our suite had a living room, kitchen, bathroom and bedroom. It was spacious, clean and functional. However, the entire suite is in need of some serious renovations. The décor is extremely out of date and the furniture was very uncomfortable/​hard.

Worst brunch. Don’t be fooled by ridiculous claim to best brunch in the county. Very poor quality food served buffet style. Nice view, but eat anywhere else.

I went to Steel Hill Resort for a wedding this summer. We had high hopes for the resort since the website does do a good job marketing the accommodations and facilities. Unfortunately the staff at steel hill resort do not seem to value customer service or the experience of the guest. For instance, I had a hand full of bags walking up their 2 flights a stairs clearly struggling and staff member walked right past without even saying hello or «can I help you with those?». I also asked a staff member where the machine was and with out stopping from where he was going he said «its really far away at the other end of the building». Since this is supposed to be a resort, I would expect a little assistance.
I think it is also worth mentioning that while I cant speak to wedding planning side of SHR, as a guest at wedding, with a partner in the wedding, the staff was not willing to be flexible to meet the reasonable needs of wedding guests coming from all over the country for the night.
For instance, the check in time is 4pm and check out is 10am. I would already take off a star for that because most places are anywhere from 1pm to 3pm check in and 11−1pm check out. For what it costs that seems a bit extreme for check-​out/​check-​in. The wedding was in late afternoon and guests needed to check in earlier to get ready. Despite calling several time during the week and that day making it clear that we needed an early check-​in, when we arrived at 130pm the front desk staff had no record of us asking and appeared affronted that we would request such a thing. You would think with a 10am check out the cleaning staff could have a room cleaned by 130? while they promised to get it cleaned asap by 230 we had not received word that it was ready and the room locked. I had to hound the front desk with phone calls 3 times till finally someone came and let us in our room.
The wedding ceremony was nice. All things aside the view is phenomenal and a beautiful place to exchange vows. At the reception the music/​dancing was all great. DJ Rolling Rick was an excellent MC at the reception.
The catering side could use some improvement. The food was bland and most guests I talked to agreed the chicken was dry. There was only 2 bar tenders that had to serve the reception and bar/​restaurant. There was a constant line at the bar. Champagne was also uncorked before the guests arrived and placed on tables and was not iced. By the time we were going to toast it was warm and flat.
After the wedding, I asked the front desk if there was any late night food options available and front desk rudely told me this is a family establishment. (Im not sure what that is supposed to mean?) Food service ends promptly at 9pm every night. I asked them if there was any accommodations they could make for us as my partner and I did not really get to eat at the reception. I even offered to pay extra for the trouble. And the front desk person got increasingly hostile with me and told me it was not her problem and she did not like my tone. I hung up and we went to bed. About 30 minutes later security was banging on my door and we were getting repeated phone calls, which when we answered they hung up. We didn’t answer the door and after 30 minutes the person banging on our door and left. Frankly, we both felt pretty unsafe and almost called the police. I guess that is how the SHR handles unsatisfied guests by trying to intimidate them with security and keep them up all night by calling the room over and over?
I would also agree with comments about it being run down. I also think it is outrageous they change 1.50 for coffee at reception. Even Motel 6 provides free Starbucks coffee.
While it is located in beautiful location with a view that cant be beat, I would not recommend staying here. Management and the staff do not seem interested in the experience of the guest and actually get pretty defensive and hostile to any negative feedback… just read the management responses to some of the negative reviews on this page. Most places will at least apologize and try to appear to rectify the situation. The lakes region has lots of wonderful resorts and I recommend going elsewhere. I went to another wedding at the Margate Resort a few years ago and they went above and beyond to see that wedding guests were comfortable and had everything they needed.

This hotel is in the middle of nowhere, it is run down but they try to make it look nice with some paint. The bathroom must be from 1970. The room I had was upstairs and I had to carry some heavy bags up 2 flights of stairs no elevators. The pool and the gym close at 10 pm. If you want to go anywhere you can’t use your GPS or you’ll lend up in the woods on a dirt road, no complementary coffee either they charge you 1.50 to use the coffee machine …

Nice resort in the local New Hampshire area. The indoor pools — complete with waterslides and spa tubs — is a HUGE PLUS (especially during chilly winter weather). Arrive to the pool area early to reserve chairs because they go fast.
The workout room is small and the machines are somewhat dated. This is compensated by the free weights, exercise balls and other equipment.
HINT: Ask the staff for the key to the observatory to enjoy spectacular views of the surrounding area. (Just be prepared to walk up several flights of stairs.)
