The Morgan at San Simeon

The bad service started with Rebecca at the front desk. When we told her the room we wanted she was none responsive. Even three people had booked into a room there where only towels for two. When I told her we needed an extra towel and blanket she told us to come and get it outselves. She was mean and nasty as she told us there was no room service in the cold night and we would have to walk out in the cold street to get the towel and blanket. :(

Hotel was great. We got a king room for a great price overlooking the pool and ocean. Staff was friendly and helpful.
With free parking and breakfast this place can’t be beat.

I have been in hotels on six continents and this ranks among the best EVER. Beautiful setting, spacious rooms and an excellent staff. Want to return.

I had a great time at this hotel. It was very clean and comfortable. I had a room with two beds. There was a fireplace and a couch. The bed was the most comfortable hotel bed I’ve slept in. There were snacks and drinks in the room available for sale. They were overpriced though so I would go to a grocery store or general store. The bathroom was nice too. There was an outdoor pool (enclosed with walls but no roof). I swam in it for half an hour and it was enjoyable. The continental breakfast was typical. This hotel is out of the busy city which is nice for a break. It’s in a great location because it’s near Hearst Castle and the cute town of Cambria.

I was a little nervous booking a night here, what with only having a 3 ½ star average rating and a few reviews complaining about cleanliness, but we got a great livingsocial deal (~100 bucks including breakfast and a bottle of reisling from a local winery that’s gotten good reviews), so I couldn’t resist pulling the trigger on that for a weekend getaway to visit Hearst Castle and drink some wine. I am happy to report, I had no major complaints about it. I’m happy to report: I had zero major complaints. I think that would depend on how much I paid — if I paid an «exhorbitant» price, yeah, I’d expect something more than basically a really nice Days Inn, which is how I would describe it (but really, like a *nice* one) — there was nothing dramatically wrong with the place, but it’s not like like you’re staying anywhere *exceptional*, it’s just a hotel of the sort that could be anywhere, except this *isn’t* anywhere, it’s a couple miles from Hearst Castle, where most of the hotels are stupid expensive. So just have the right expectations, pay the right price, and (unless my room was an anomaly), you’ll be happy enough. (Granted, I also can’t comment on whether their second building is much worse than their primary one, as we were given a room in their primary one.)
So yeah. No real complaints. Parking was free and present, wifi was a bit slow but not unusably so, and totally reliable (and also free). Bed was plenty comfy, pillows were plenty comfy, we had plenty of space and a little couch, checkin was super fast and super easy, as was checkout, our room (including the bathroom) was totally clean as far as I could tell, the shower ran fine, and while breakfast wasn’t anything fancy, I will call out specifically that they get their baked goods from a local bakery, and they were *good*. At first glance, they just look like those cheap crappy danishes of the sort you’d get at any cheap hotel anywhere in the world — you know the ones — but they are *not*. They are worlds better. I ate like 4 of them. I wasn’t really that hungry, but they were *good*.
Only real complaint is that, yes, it is absolutely right on Highway 1, so if you get a room facing the highway, you will definitely hear cars zooming by if you leave the window open (and you will probably want to leave the window open, or it’d get pretty stuffy pretty quick). We just always bring earplugs with us to sleep with anyway — we’re used to that, we live in a downtown — so it didn’t bother us too much. But that is something to keep in mind.

My sister chose this hotel as she has been there before. It is a small hotel close to Hearst Castle and Cambria. We had to drive whenever we went out except to the Mexican restaurant next doors (drive, don’t eat there) but it was okay if you know from arrival. We walked to the ocean and had an amazing ocean sunset view from our room. Every time we returned to the hotel, it felt like we came home to our cozy house. Staff was amazing, room was clean, and bed extremely comfortable.
I give 5 stars for the hotel and staff. As long as you know you need to drive for any needs including no gift shop at the hotel.

I stayed in room 418. I had the room booked through Expedia. 1 thing the hotel or Expedia doesn’t tell you is that all of the added jets to the shower and jacuzzi bath have been disabled. So paying for a room that had these amenities and finding out they don’t offer them now is frustrating and now a HUGE hassle to get any compensation back for what I paid for and didn’t get.
There was supposed to be a sofa included in the room which they took out and replaced with 2 uncomfortable chairs and a small table.
The free wifi included didn’t work, and when I called about it I was told that they constantly have problems with it.
There were also pieces of the heater and heater control that were falling off.

Stayed here for 1 night it’s very cozy and the people are sweet and nice! The free continental breakfast wasn’t the best in my opinion but it was free and can’t complain. The room was clean and comfortable.

We stayed here on a Saturday night after a trip to Hearst Castle and found it what one would expect in a small town in a rural area. It has the basics and we found the bed comfortable but the pillows lacking so I could not get my head and neck in a comfortable arrangement.
The facility has some age but overall was in pretty good condition. My one big gripe is that the walls and floor are not very sound proof as I heard the person in the next room coughing and the kids above us in the second floor running around. The highway noise was not too bad and died down later in the evening.
Thus review is for the original facility and not the two story facility detached to the north of the restaurant.
If you want an older place (the door used an actual key) that does not have an AC (we opened the window to cool the room and the trade off was the highway noise.
If you stay here get a second floor room on the back side.

Touted as a boutique hotel. More like a holiday inn express. The hotel is quite old and so are the appliances and accommodations. The room is large and and has a gas fireplace. Nice ocean view. Bed was comfortable but the comforter needed cleaning
Good snack and even wine. For sale of course
The continental breakfast was managed by a not so friendly hotel worker and had weak coffee and limited variety. Could have used some fresh fruit or better pastries
Overall not bad but not the quality its Sells online
Many other choices in Cambria better suited

A decent hotel in the middle of nowhere. No AC in rooms, free breakfast was some muffins, cereal and hard boiled eggs. I went down at 715 and saw food out, grabbed something for my son and was greeted by an angry employee who said breakfast starts at 730. Very weird. I’d stay at the nearby Best Western next time as it looked nicer from the outside.

I paid an exhorbitant price which I was told was a deal. No ac in the room, no concierge or bell hop service, continental breakfast starts very late, ocean view was a postage stamp size from two blocks away… I want my money back. I wish I would have stayed at the Best Western.

I review based on what is trying to be accomplished. Is this the Bel Aire? No. But I thoroughly liked this place for its appointments and location. Very near the beach, castle etc. not much in the way of views, but I knew that booking it.
What sets this place apart is the service. I booked two rooms short notice (no refund), but got there needing only one room– they were very accommodating and I got out of the second room. Everyone was friendly and the light breakfast in the morning was perfect.
My only complaint is the WiFi is sketchy… I had to use cellular to complete something time sensitive.
It’s not far from the beach at all…

One of the nicest hotels in San Simeon, certainly the best for the money. Everything is clean. The staff is courteous. A pretty decent continental breakfast is included. Lots of towels and pillows in the room. High quality soaps, lotion, shampoo and conditioner.

This hotel has more travel site stars than it’s neighbors, but I’m not quite sure why. I guess they have the right amenities for the checklist. The guest room I stayed in was pretty tired. The couch and chair were both slumped badly. The bed headboards were tired. The bathroom was really dated, the sink/​counter was some sort of molded plastic that was so old it was deteriorating. The faucets each turned in unexpected ways — one turned a full 270 degrees, the other just 90, but in the wrong direction. The door was painted poorly, etc…
With that said, our room was quiet (despite being near an entry door), and spacious enough for 4 people.

Very clean, some nice amenities, basic breakfast, exceptionally courteous and accommodating staff and above-​average beds and linens. The worst thing I can say is that the bathroom faucet dripped and the sink had seen better days, but it was behind a door that could be closed so it probably would not interfere with a sensitive sleeper’s rest.
Altogether, this place has a very pleasant vibe and I would stay here again.

This place is A-​OK. I got a Groupon for the hotel and the website version of the Groupon was misleading and I thought the room I booked had a fireplace. When I looked at the mobile site version of the Groupon later, that had completely different (and more clarifying) details than the site.
Only Deluxe tooms have a fireplace, FYI.
When I queried the staff about my concern, they were extremely kind and upgraded us to a Deluxe room. Thank gosh they did, because the walls are paper thin (and yes, we stayed in the ‘main’ building).
The original room was right next to the dining area. The new room was above the dining area. We could hear everything. I have a white noise app on my phone and that was how I could tune out the noise to sleep.
The breakfast is pretty much a continental breakfast (standard carby items). Very nice breakfast seating area.
Note that the pool, while enclosed, is an outdoor pool. It’s very pretty. I really liked the holiday decorations around the hotel, and the staff are very nice. Centrally located between Hearst Castle and Cambria.
Not sure I would stay here again, honestly, because you can hear all the noises. For example, we could hear people shuffling cards downstairs. The room, although ‘Deluxe’, was very distressed (see my pic of the beat up sink as an example in the Unilocal gallery).
For the price, yeah, it’s a good deal (if you use the Groupon), but for me, quiet is very important in a hotel.

Older but clean hotel. Peaceful ocean view. Short walk to the beach.
Mini breakfast bar was nice.
Minus one start for trying to charge more than what was in the confirmation. The young guy at the desk didn’t seem too happy when I had him call his manager who was off duty to make them honor the reservation rate.
Didn’t stay in the main building but the stay was comfortable.

I’m not sure what all the big fuss is about. I purchased a Groupon and stayed this past weekend in the second building. I have nothing to complain about, the ocean view was beautiful. Everything was in working order, it came with a fridge, working bathroom, comfy bed/​pillows. What more can you ask for?
Like someone else was saying, being in the second building seemed more private. We had breakfast at the hotel Saturday morning and it was bagels/​toast/​boiled eggs/​yogurt, nothing amazing, but hey it was free. Checking in and out was fast and easy, I’d definitely come back again if I’m ever in the area.

We stayed here this weekend, celebrating our wedding anniversary. Fans of coastal towns, we were excited to find a Groupon that we could use for our visit.
Reservations, check-​in and check-​out went smoothly. Our room was in the second building, which was perfectly fine with us. I think it actually felt more private. We had mountain side and although it would have been nice to have an ocean view, our room was nice, bed comfy, plenty of bathroom counter space and I liked the little curved window area. I thought the wine glasses and wine bottle opener provided were a nice touch.
I think the location was perfect for our trip — we spent some time in San Simeon (Hearst Castle is ~10 minutes away, if that) as well as Cambria (~10 minutes away) and a little wine tasting in Paso Robles (~45 minutes away). It was also nice to be able to go for a walk along the ocean and on the beach, via the convenient access points. There are a few restaurants nearby but nothing that we found particularly great.
I would definitely consider returning for another getaway to the area.
