Michael started playing violin when he was 5, and played his first paid professional gig at the age of 11. He has played violin for 46 years. He started teaching in 1991, and has continued to improve his approach ever since. Though he spent his formative years learning standard classical approaches to playing, he has broadened his playing interests over the years to include everything from Scottish and Irish, old time, rock, blues, country, western swing, and jazz. Conversely his approach to teaching over the years has focused more and more on teaching solid basic technique: he teaches his beginner and intermediate students from a violin method that yields results. Michael’s philosophy about essential approaches to playing is «Good technique is good technique regardless of what kind of music you play». He has learned to teach from the school of hard experience and is always paying attention to ways to improve how he teaches.
