this place has a very poor business model with the restroom keys. staff tells me to put my key back in a special bowl because it is unsanitary? are you kidding me? if it is actually unsanitary, then you shouldn’t give it out to customers in the first place. learn business please because used bookstores are already suffering.

I love frequenting independent booksellers, and Copperfield’s in San Rafael is a local treat. The staff is down-​to-​earth and knowledgeable. Dogs are allowed in the book area (not the café up front, of course), and they always offer my dog a treat.
The store offers a rewards program for a nominal fee, and a teacher’s discount for books and materials used in the classroom. With their not-​infrequent buy 2, get one free sales, I have walked out of Copperfield’s on more than one occasion with an armful of books. They often have wonderful children’s books on sale, and a well-​stocked children’s collection. As a teacher, I was impressed by the quality of the books offered when I was shopping for a recent biography unit. Truly beautiful and diverse books.
There is a large magazine section and a wide variety of greeting cards, some by local artists, and many hilarious and unique ones as well.
Copperfield’s has a good selection of gifts and puzzles for every reader and nonreader.
There are several places to sit and read in the store, and I have never been bothered by an employee while browsing for ages… except to ask if I need any help.

How cool is this place? Too cool. I’d rather spend a few dollars more to buy my books here than online or at a larger bookstore because their staff is so friendly and knowledgeable. The older gentlemen (50’s) with the beard and glasses that works there is a treat just to see in itself. He’s always walking around smiling and talking with everyone. You can tell he loves what he does and its awesome. Just walking into Copperfields you’re smacked right in the nostrils with the arouma of coffee beans mixed with the smells of a new book. Booya. Plus they carry just about everything and have cards, magazines and a rad collection of socks! Make sure to check out their really great selection of books on sale too!

Lovely independent bookstore in San Rafael. The café seems nice but isn’t especially relevant to me (I don’t drink coffee), but the bookstore itself is wonderful: an excellent selection of books from every category and genre; a helpful, knowledgeable staff; a big, open area that encourages browsing and wandering; and a strong selection of magazines and other items. Independent bookstores are a sadly endangered species, thanks to Amazon, so places like this deserve all the support we can give them; luckily, Copperfield’s more than earns that support.

This place is good– great selection of new titles, little tilting toward the New Agey. The coffee shop is tops– in all a great place to hang out.

Every time I’ve visited this store an employee has taken my shoulder bag from me. They treat you like a thief for simply bringing a bag to carry the books you buy.
This has happened to me on multiple occasions. They treat female customers differently.
Why the sexism copperfields?

Great place and it’s all about supporting local booksellers. You can’t chill at the ‘Amazon’ café so pay a bit extra unless, of course, you prefer pawn shops or another bloody hair salon.

Love this place! I love the fact that they have s really nice café here with yummy drinks and goodies to eat! Wish Petaluma had a café connected to its bookstore!

Pleasant little book store and a fun place to browse. They also have an amazing selection of magazines and greeting cards. There is a coffee shop inside the store as well. The book selection is a bit eclectic, so it’s more of a place to just wander and see what catches your eye vs. expecting stacks of best sellers.

Copperfield’s is more than a bookstore — it’s a neighborhood nucleus.
I’m so delighted by this addition to San Rafael’s 4^th Street. It’s so nice to have an independent book store in the hood and not a massive chain like Barnes & Noble or Border’s. Similar to Book Passage in Corte Madera, Copperfield’s has created a very communal, inviting environment for book lovers.
There are aisles and aisles of new books and classics here to satiate the most discerning bookworm. Plus, they also have a charming Taylor Maid Organic Coffee shop to get your caffeine fix. And I tell you, there’s nothing more relaxing than sitting in their café with a good novel, and doing a little people-​watching as well.
Service at Copperfield’s is consistently top-​notch. Everyone’s super helpful and friendly. This is just a great bookstore on every level. I hope the community continues to support them. Don’t let the giant book chains take over. We need places like Copperfield’s.

A quaint bookshop with a decent selection of books and friendly staff. The prices don’t compete with Amazon but can always fulfill the need for immediate satisfaction. I stopped by here with one such need for a particular book and alas they didn’t have it (a NYT bestseller).
The café — «Taylor Made Farms» — serving organic coffee is a nice feature and offers a large seating area. The store is tidy and organized in a familiar Barnes and Nobles sort of way.
I would recommend this place to meet up with friends or business colleagues as it provides a comfortable place to have a conversation over coffee.

WONDERFUL bookstore! The books are so prettily displayed, and the salespeople are incredibly helpful. A friend and I were looking for a book on octopuses, and the saleswoman not only found it for us right away, but she also showed us this a related beautiful book — not even to sell it to us, but to just show us the beauty of this book (and it was filled with stunning photography).
I just loved the layout of the store. They should really put the fiction section right up front and center, though, it’s too bad it’s off to the side and a bit hidden!

I’m a sucker for a good bookstore.
I love to wander around the narrow isles and take in the tall shelves filled to the brim with stories. San Francisco has no shortage of them; Green Apple Books, Booksmith, City Lights, Dog Eared Books, and Omnivore Books on Food are just a few of my favorites. There are a few gems in Marin too. I wrote the list before I learned about my favorite spot in San Rafael, Copperfield’s Books. Copperfield’s is a great addition to 4^th street. It’s the perfect place to spend a few hours reading a new book, doing work, or relaxing with a magazine. They have a large selection of titles to choose from and plenty of space in their café to read. Copperfield’s also hosts a great deal of author events in San Rafael, as well as their other North Bay locations. I’m happy to support a local bookstore like Copperfield’s for all of my reading needs!

You can only love this place.
Great selection and great customer service (which is helpful if they don’t have what you’re looking for, they’ll get it for you!!).
Nice environment, quiet enough yet not library-​esque.

The only downside is that it’s kind of expensive but it’s definitely better to buy here and support a local company rather than a huge, internet-​based corporation.

Great sales tables, the price range at this place has severely improved.
The kids section is great and full of unique and fun books. The pop up books they have are awesome and a great motivator for kids who don’t like to read (or at least, don’t KNOW they like to read yet, lol).
My only thought is that it would be nice if they had a section for classics. Certainly would make it a lot easier to find some books that you forget but are on the tip of your tongue and all that. But that’s a personal preference and has nothing to do with the actual quality of the store.
It’s clean, spacious, and bright. The book variety is lovely and they’re happy to order in anything they don’t have. I go here all the time and will continue doing so. No better spot to buy a book and then grab a cup of coffee and spend a few hours reading.

I go out of my way to buy books here. I really enjoy the vibe and the quirky staff– Adam over at the café always brightens my day. The staff always have great recommendations and totally get me when I say things like «I’m feeling something a bit nerdy but not too cerebral.» Or «I need a gift for a sarcastic chef.» I love this place.
–1* for getting rid of the Lavender coffee drinks. Ever since then I haven’t been quite so desperate to get down there.

Copperfield’s Books was a chance drop-​in. looking for Taylor Maid coffee at the time. set up is similiar to Books, Inc. many shelves with many titles. magazines too.
not much time to read these days. when i have time, Copperfield’s will be an option since they offer books on sale. (love sales!)

What a store! Super large selection of books, a nice café, awesome staff, clean & new bathrooms. I don’t buy books a lot (I tend to go to the library), but I really liked the vibe at this store. My friend bought some temporary tattoos for her nieces. Great place to take kids.

Life changing experience. And here’s why:
I walked in on a whim. I had walked by it a couple times running other errands, but I usually don’t leave myself enough time to wander into other stores besides ones on my to-​do list. I had to visit the AT&T store across the street, didn’t find what I was looking for, and wandered into Copperfield’s.
I am a book lover. I am a lover of stories, of fiction, of page-​turners, of revealing non-​fiction. I am an aspiring author, and I love a good book, and adore even more a good bookstore. Lately, I’ve been frequenting a big-​box competitor out of habit and convenience, but that has all changed after I walked into Copperfield’s.
High ceilings. Beautifully assembled shelves of colorful, intricately arranged books. Smells like freshly cut wood. Love, love.
I’ve been on the hunt for a story that will pull me in like Gillian Flynn’s Gone Girl, and John Green’s The Fault in our Stars. But Flynn’s other books were too dark for me, and I’m not usually into young adult fiction.
Enter Belinda.
I told her my dilemma after wandering around on my own for a bit, picking up paperbacks, turning them over to read blurbs, leafing through the first couple pages of books that caught my eye. She led me to John Green’s other novels which were in a featured section, and gave me her own version of the blurb for each of them, as she had read them all! I was able to have a really constructive dialogue with her about the type of novels I loved, and what I was looking for. She asked me a ton of questions to help me narrow done a couple potential choices, and I left, really excited, with John Green’s Looking For Alaska and David Levithan’s Every Day. They look great, and I just so enjoyed my experience in this bookstore and with Belinda.
The vibe is so easy going. I could just wander around in there for hours. I felt immediately comfortable and at home, and not like someone was watching me, or asking me every few minutes if I need help finding anything, only to not be able to really recommend anything that I might actually like.
I will return, over and over again. I will not go back to the aforementioned big-​box store. I will recommend this gem to all my friends with the hope that this local treasure will stay and be utilized by our community.
