The Allergy & Asthma Clinic

Prior to discovering Dr. Engler’s office on Unilocal,I had seen another allergist where I was tested for 20 things and given allergy drops. As it turned out the drops were unsuccessful because, as Dr. Engler later found, I was allergic to 100 different environmental allergens.
After the results of my test Dr. Engler shared the potential options without forcing his opinion on me. I decided that allergy shots would provide me the best chance to overcome my allergies. There was 1 problem: I was moving overseas and I was certain no allergist would allow me to administer the shots on my own. When I shared the bad news with Dr. Engler I was surprised to hear his office could train me to give the shots myself. In the following weeks I had 2 follow up visits to learn how to give the shots and how to use the epi-​pen in an emergency.
Fast forward 2 years and I’m still overseas and on allergy shots. Every couple months the office sends new shots to my colleagues who then deliver the kits to me. Each time I visit California I stop by the office for a follow up appointment. When I send them an e-​message through the «patient portal» I get a response back the next day. I can’t say enough about the office — its more efficient and professional than any doctors office I’ve ever visited.
Although I still have a ways to go, the shots have helped tremendously. My rhinitis is no longer an issue nor is my chronic fatigue. Its comforting to know allergy shots are a natural, non-​steroid way to desensitize my immune system.

Going in 7 months into my treatment, my allergies no longer bother me! After my initial allergy testing, I found out I was pretty much allergic to everything and to a degree off the charts. But the whole process of getting allergy shots several times per week has been worth it. The upcoming Spring will be the real test.
The staff and nurses are very nice, and always efficient with getting me in and out of the clinic for my regular round of shots.
A few more weeks left and it feels like graduation!

Dr. Engler is probably the most compassionate doctor I’ve ever met. His staff are amazing as well. I’ve never felt rushed in any appointment at all. He truly listens and cares about your issues. Funny how that’s almost rare for a doctor these days! I’ve been to too many doctors who belittle your health concerns as nothing. Dr. Engler is everything a doctor should be.

I am so glad that we waited to bring our son here to see Dr. June Zhang! She is definitely heaven sent. After worrying about our son and his allergies for the past several months and having to go through a very scary ER visit, Dr. Zhang put our minds at ease knowing that we can get back to living a normal, yet informed, quality of life without fear of another allergy attack. Dr. Zhang and her staff were very patient and thorough and were able to determine what caused our son’s severe allergic reaction. Having a background in pediatric care, Dr. Zhang was also able to evaluate and diagnose other issues that our son has been battling for the past year/​months. Sure enough after the proper treatment as per Dr. Zhang’s instructions, our son is doing muuuch better! Thank God for Dr. Zhang and her medical staff! This office rocks!

Dr June Zhang is the best doctor that I have ever seen over my 40+ years. Every time I see her, she always shows great interest in my well being and very observant about my conditions. She spends plenty of time with me to discuss my concerns and issues with me instead of telling me what I should do or not do. It is always a discussion between us and I love that I can have a honest and direct conversation with her. Doctors have great knowledge about their practice but no one knows your own body better than yourself so when a doctor is willing to take the time to talk with you, that is something worth doing.
I never get the sense that she wants to get in and get out of the room during my visit. She is always extremely patient and willing to explain anything to me. I am so impressed by her that I have to write a positive review for her. I normally read reviews but almost never post reviews except for special situations or special people.
If you are in need of allergy or asthma treatments, you can rest assure that Dr Zhang will provide the BEST possible care for you.

Dr. Engler is as amazing and caring as ever. He gets back to patients with questions right away. His advice is invaluable, and he stays on top of the latest best medicines and approaches. I just saw Dr. Engler & his team again. Their commitment to patient health is mind-​blowing. They take the time to explain the science, and their exam approach, especially detailing your symptoms, is impressively thorough. The are truly focused on healing, helping and slaying allergies. I cannot recommend The Allergy & Asthma Clinic enough.

The good: They (the clinic) do allergy testing accurately and communicate the results well
The bad: They (Dr. Engler) are very bad at actually treating allergies, at least in my case. They gave me a host of medications to try, none of which helped. They then essentially dropped me as a patient by not being responsive. After scheduling an appointment to get further instructions/​response, I had to wait for 1.5 hours to actually see the doctor to ask those questions. Even then, they did not have any treatment options nor did they want to continue looking into ways to help.
The ugly: They (Dr. Engler and the clinic) seemed to care very much about me when there was more (expensive) testing needing to be performed, calling me weekly to schedule more appointments. After they were done with the testing, it’s taken multiple days to hear back on questions and they now seem to care zero.

I finished my additional two testing appointments and everything was five stars including phone calls, insurance coordination, nurses, wait time, etc. The staff here are highly attentive and competent, the doctor is on time and has a great bedside manner. I appreciate this office so much.

I should have gone to see Dr. Engler a long time ago! I’m half way done with my allergy testing, but I already have so much useful information from my first visit! Vicky was with me through all the procedures and she was wonderful:-) Dr. Engler is kind and explains everything very thoroughly! My visit was so pleasant, that I’m actually looking forward to going back in 3 weeks for the rest of my testing!

My daughter was a patient at the Allergy and Asthma Clinic for 5 years (until our family relocated to Switzerland in 2013). My daughter completed the full 5 years of immunotherapy and I believe it was a great help to reduce her allergies and more important had a positive impact on her lung capacity/​functionality and overall health. In Switzerland my daughter’s pediatrician suggested that we see an Allergist who is also an «Ear, Nose and Throat» specialist. After doing allergy testing, lung function/​capacity testing with the Allergist in Basel, Switzerland, the subsequent recommendation was for my daughter to do a steroid inhaler. Ultimately I was uncomfortable with the recommended course of treatment and so I consulted Brooke Leon at the Allergy and Asthma clinic because we had a long standing relationship and more importantly, I trust her. Remember, I live in Switzerland now, my daughter is theoretically not a patient in their practice anymore. Brooke was amazing and after I gave her all the test results from Switzerland she took them to both Dr. Engler and Dr. Zhang for review. Did I mention I live in Switzerland now? I am so grateful to the Allergy and Asthma Clinic for the help, support, expertise and guidance on behalf of my daughter’s well being. Got Allergies? I have been a patient of the Allergy and Asthma Clinic since I was 18 and I just celebrated my 42^nd birthday! You will never meet a nicer, more welcoming and more thorough office of nurses, nurse practitioners, admin staff and doctor. When you are a patient here, you are treated with the utmost professionalism and care and everyone goes the extra mile to make you more comfortable, healthy and happy. A perfect example: I came in today to seek treatment for a sinus infection. I’m leaving with not only a diagnosis, but having had a breathing treatment to make my chest symptoms better plus a little bag of samples of new meds that will help with and prevent further symptoms. Dr. Engler is an excellent diagnostician and expert in his field and he employs the very best nurse practitioners, nurses and office staff. My allergies are so severe that I require weekly allergy shots. The process is such a breeze that I’m able to be in and out on my lunch hour! Also, I have a 3 year old son who has likely inherited my severe allergies. Luckily, there is also a wonderful Pediatric Allergist named Dr. June who is part of the practice! He has a testing appointment with her next week and I feel so fortunate knowing that he is in the very best care. If you are a patient of Dr. Engler and the Allergy and Asthma Clinic, you are working with the very best in the field.

Doctor was ok. Plan on sitting in a very uncomfortable position is a meat locker cold exam room for over 2 hrs. Having your «business» being observed in an open area that is not private. No door between pseudo exam area and the friggin waiting room. Plan on have your information being violated off the bat. The people behind the desk do not care about what your name is but what kind of insurance that you have. I was not even asked my name just my insurance info which really annoyed me.
Treatment options are very limited. I should have saved my money and just bought OTC’s since all of the drugs that this office hawks are not covered by insurance. They give coupons but what use will it be when big pharma decides to cut the coupon. 1^st and last trip to this offfice. I can not recommend at all.

My son was diagnosed with pneumonia in late February. He was put on three different antibiotics. With the second medication, he broke out in a rash along with mild itchiness. Spoke to the on call pediatrician, who informed me to continue with the antibiotic (4^th day) because it was only an «amoxicillin rash» and come into the office the next day, which was Monday, if the rash spreads. I should have trusted my instincts but I gave him the dose in the evening and the rash got extremely worse — spread from head to toe along with severe itchiness. We saw our regular pediatrician on Monday and she changed the medication becaue his pneuomia has gotten worse. FYI: We saw three different doctors in the office. It is important to follow up with your own doctor because we received different recommendations and it was frustrating.
Anyway, our pediatrician wanted my son to be on a new asthma inhaler to help with the pneumonia and I wanted to get a second opinion. Dr. June Zhang saw my son and agreed with our pediatrician’s assessment. My son had other tests to confirm her findings. She took her time and answered all of our questions. This definitely reassured me. A lot of people don’t realize that medications have bad side effects. What was great about the appointment was that we were given samples and directions on how to use them. The nurse, Wendy, is also wonderful along with Dr. Zhang’s office staff.

I wish all doctors offices we’re as great as this one! I saw Dr. June. She was so good and so was the nurse helping her. I felt comfortable and relaxed the whole time. I left feeling very informed about my allergies and asthma …(this was my first time going to any allergy/​asthma clinic). The woman at the front desk was also so friendly and welcoming. I will be recommending this clinic to all my family and friends.

I’ve been a patient at The Allergy and Asthma Clinic since 2011 and I have never had such a positive experience with a health care provider as I have at this practice.
I’ve met with Dr. Engler and both NPs; Brooke and Elisabeth. All three of them are very personable, caring, knowledgeable, and a delight to deal with. You can tell they are passionate about their work and really care for their patients. My experience with the nurses and office staff is no different; everyone is very friendly and really makes an effort to go above and beyond; very «pro-​patient.»
Several benefits this practice offers that I haven’t experienced with other doctor offices are:
1. After every appointment with the Dr. or NP, they mail a summary of the visit detailing the symptoms I came in for, the options discussed, and the treatment path. I can’t say how helpful that is for someone who forgets everything the moment they walk out the door. They also give me lots of free samples and coupons in a goodie bag … which always makes me feel special.
2. Office hours: they open at 9:00 a.m. and three days of the week, they’re open until 7:00 p.m. They’re also open until noon on Saturday. This is a great option when you visit the office a lot. I once had to make an «emergency» appointment because I had a flair up with my asthma. Even though they were booked, they were able to fit me in. This kind of convenience is a big bonus in my book.
3. Parking: the have inside-​garage parking which they validate so you never have to worry about paying a meter.
4. Free Wi-​Fi: I have a weekly appointment which lasts for two hours. After a while, it gets boring so being able to bring my tablet and stream TV or surf the Internet makes the time pass much faster.
5. They have free suckers for adults!
When I first visited this practice and had my first scratch test in July 2011, I found I was allergic to almost everything; many of the reactions were rated 4 or higher. I participated in the weekly immunotherapy for a year, then opted for the home treatment. The home treatment was convenient, but I found that I had reactions to the home injections so I quit.
After not participating for a year and being miserable the whole time, I went back and asked if I could start again (I put off reaching out because I quit the home immunotherapy cold turkey and never told them why … so I was afraid they would be mad). They were glad I wanted to start again.
They administered a second scratch test to see if there were any changes in reactions. The results of the second test compared with the first one (three years prior minus one year for skipping) … showed a huge improvement. Many of the reactions were completely gone and those that remained, most if not all had lowered (I’ll post my results so you can see the difference). I was able to start the therapy again but didn’t have to start at the very beginning and within a month and a half, I’m almost at my maintenance level.
Keep up the good work everyone … you are all terrific!

Dr. Engler’s 5 Star reviews are well deserved. Everyone I’ve come into contact with at the clinic has been professional, knowledgable and friendly. This is how every doctor’s office should be run.
I highly suggest looking into what it is that you may be allergic to!
PS: Worth the trip from SF. Easy access from the 101 and just 2 blocks from Caltrain.
