Nine Rubies Knitting

Cozy little knitting shop, and the closest one to Mr. Piano’s current abode in San Bruno that is open on a Sunday and doesn’t require going into San Francisco.
Not the biggest selection of yarns I’ve ever seen, surely, nor a great variety of needles available from what I saw, but what they do carry appears to be good quality yarn. I guess they’re kind of like the Trader Joe’s of yarn stores in that sense – kind of narrow selection, but it is curated such that whatever you pick up is highly likely to be good.
I sort of wish there was more natural lighting in the store, because taking some of the yarn we were looking at to the window revealed some drastically different colors than the slightly yellow lighting in the store led me to believe I was looking at, but that’s probably difficult to achieve in that building (and really, there’s only so much you can do). I’m just glad they have that large windowed portion out front so you can wander over and see the prospective yarn colors in sunlight.
The staff seem friendly and definitely geared towards explaining the shop layout to people who are either new to knitting or new to shopping for yarn in a brick-​and-​mortar shop (which I suspect is now a commonly uncommon thing). The store is definitely appealingly laid out, and is mostly organized by yarn weights. Several ladies were knitting in the seating area in the center of the store, as well as at the table in the front window, so it seems like they have a number of local knitters frequenting the store (which I always find charming). It’s a little far from me to be visiting regularly, but I certainly would stop in again :)

This shop is great! I am completely new to knitting so I wanted to go to a specialty store instead of Michael’s so I could get some advice if needed. Good thing I did because I was immediately overwhelmed. Apparently I looked it too, because the woman who was working quickly asked if I needed help. I explained that I had never knitted/​crocheted/​whatever else in my life, but that I was looking to knit a baby blanket as a gift. She took a look at the pattern I was using and offered insight into different yarns I could use, how many to buy, and colors I could use. I would definitely recommend this store!

I’ve stopped by this cute little yarn store a few times when in the area but this week I was on a mission. Ready to start a complex sweater pattern; looking for yarn and help converting the pattern since I would be using a different weight yarn.
When I walked in, there were a couple groups of women sitting chatting and knitting away happily. Several people welcomed me to the store and Suta happily came over taking her time to show me different yarns that would be perfect for my sweater. Once I chose a yarn she even helped me figure out the math.
Ok, I’ll be honest, I had no clue how she calculated it but she literally rewrote the pattern for me.
I felt so welcome that I may even join one of their knitting groups.
This shop is a true gem. Can’t wait to go back!

So after the owner posted a message for me on here I decided to give Nine Rubies another shot. And I’ve now gone 6 or 7 times and it’s been much better. I am glad I went back.
I decided to forgo beginner lessons and just taught myself out to knit on youtube. It worked. And actually the people here have been pretty supportive and helpful.
I will probably take a more advanced class here. And in the meantime, they’ve been very helpful with fiber suggestions and assistance with mistakes.
Overall, happy I gave this place another shot.

Good selection, staff was moderately nice. I’m a very new knitter and I think they cater to a more advanced clientele.

Support your local LYS!!! I’ve come in here on and off over the years to buy fiber. Selection is definitely on the smaller side compared to Purlescence, Uncommon Threads, and Green Planet but the staff here is really helpful and the regulars are nice.
They are really knowledgeable about the fibers they carry and recommended a good sock yarn and advised my against my original first pick.
The owners are extremely well versed in yarn technicalities and can rattle off suggested needles sizes for each of the yarns they carry. Granted they don’t have every type of every brand; they do an amazing job helping the customers with yarn substitutes and color pairing.
Make sure you pay your meter adequately! I’ve definitely gotten lost thinking of all the possible projects I could make when shopping their yarns.

Gorgeous boutique, friendly and knowledgeable staff. Variety of yarns, prices seemed reasonable, especially for location of shop. Must be patient finding parking.

You cannot find better customer service anywhere. They help me with anything and everything. They run their business with integrity for the the love of knitting. It is a great place to learn to knit (or crochet) or just sit and knit. They have classes for all age and skill levels. I’ve seen girl scouts and birthday parties here.
If you don’t knit, this is the place to learn. The owners are the nicest people.
I wish they carried more non wool but what they have is amazing.

I came here to buy some yarn as a Christmas gift.
A few ladies were sitting on the couch kitting and chatting away. They were all super friendly and the lady who works there helped me to find the perfect yarn.
Great experience.

Very nice shop with high-​end yarn. They wound my purchases and were helpful. I do think their top shelves are too high for the average shopper, I needed a lot of help to see the merchandise up there, but overall a nice shop

I really want to like this place as there are not much yarn stores nearby. The place is nice and carries very nice yarn that ranges from very affordable to very expensive.
I’ve bought yarn and made a cowl out of it and have received many compliments on it. I told people that I got the yarn from Nine Rubies and that I’m glad I finally got to check it out.
My biggest problem with this place is that it really doesn’t make you feel like you’re welcomed. I don’t know if it’s just the same person giving that vibe or most of them. One time, after entering the store, everyone just looked at me. The nearest employee who was about two feet away just looked at me. No greeting, no smile. It felt so awkward! It was like I was invading their privacy. I smiled at her and animatedly said that I’m getting yarn. Fortunately, someone said «hi!» from across the room (older woman who helped me purchase yarn later on. I like her.), which verified that I’m not crazy for being there.
Someone told me that she got great service from the owner but that happened on a different day of the week. Service probably depends on who’s working that day. My last visit left a very bad taste on my mouth. Again, I really want to like this place and support local businesses. I hope they all warm up to their new (and potential repeat) customers.

Eh. I went in today and didn’t get much help. The lady at the cash register finished ringing up the customers already in line then it was my turn to get help but another lady came up with a purchase and she put me off without asking if it was ok, which I normally would say fine. I’m not an old white lady (but I love old white ladies) and that seemed to be the preferred clientele. The cashier waved me off to another employee that walked in the store to start her shift. I needed to match yarn to a project I already started. The second employee halfheartedly offered me yarn options that were in no way a match to what I have. Don’t pretend to help me, just tell me you don’t have it, don’t carry it whatever. She offered me yarn that was not the same weight, too shiny or multi colored! I have a solid green project to work on that is ¾ done, why would I want a mixed color ball of yarn?! I would have to buy 5 skeins just to get enough of that color. I’m sure others have nice experiences, I can see that happening at this store but I didn’t and won’t be back. I heard the cashier helping a lady earlier and ordering yarn for her. I guess I could do that myself online but no one offered to look beyond what was in the store to help me with finishing my project. They weren’t rude, just not interested in helping me. A 3 star place to me is an ok place that I would return to. 2 stars for this place because I will not return.

I love the ambiance, vast selection, and owner’s kind attitude. I Took a class here with May for an intro to knitting, loved it. I Buy the majority of my materials for my knitting needs from here– I love it all.

This place is wonderful. Super friendly and helpful staff. They’ve got an incredible selection of yarn. I wish I lived closer!

I’m very excited to start learning to knit. My sister is the type to learn from books but I need someone to show me the actual steps… and that’s what I learned from Knitting 101. I actually even finished my scarf with a bit of knitting and purling. I’m already signed up for my next class, «hats, hats, hats». Mae has been patient and detailed with the class. Sometimes I just want to kidnap her in case I have a dropped stitch or something, however no need as the people here are so helpful and they actually offer a Knitting 911 type walk-​in type session for those that need serious help.
The staff has always been helpful and the selections of yarn is great. They have such beautiful colors and a variety of sorts. I may use Michael’s for fun simple projects, but the real good stuff is here at Nine Rubies Knitting.

Just dropped by at the end of the day to spend my Livingsocial coupon. The lady working there was super nice and didn’t pressure me, even though it was 15 minutes before closing! Ahhh! I wished I could have spent more time here.
The shop layout is cozy, yet well organized. Beautiful from a design perspective. There is a seating area where you can knit and get inspired by petting the sample projects. They stock the favorites of yarn snobs, such as Malabrigo and Noro. They also have some basic yarns. A good mix of novelty and regular. Prices are on-​par with other yarn shops I’ve been to. Service is incredible, though! They copied a free pattern for me and offered to wind my sock weight yarn.
There is metered parking out front. The parking patrol is vigilant, so don’t run out of time!
Wish I lived closer to this shop… I’d be here all the time. :)

I have been at Nine Rubies Knitting for the past four Sunday mornings taking… zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz­zzzz…oh, i’m sorry I fell asleep. Must be old age! Just kidding… but my friend thinks i’m such a grandma for taking knitting classes here at Nine Rubies.
I never would have known this place existed had it not been for the Living Social Deal. $ 15 for $ 30 worth which you could apply towards lessons which is exactly what I did. I signed up for Knitting 101 and it’s $ 75 for four 2 hour lessons. I finished my last class today and I already plan to sign up for 102.
The staff here is really nice, knowledgeable and helpful. My instructor, May was also nice and extremely patient with our small class of 5. I learned the basics of knitting and well on my way to finishing my first project, a scarf… at least I plan on finishing it if I don’t get distracted!
Highly recommend this place if you are interested in learning how to be a grandma or in need of some gorgeous yarn. Stop by and check it out!

The FH (Future Husband) is a manly man. That means he says, «You go see The King’s Speech, I’m going to see True Grit because it’s a manly movie.» Cue my eye roll.
My manly man decided to take up knitting. WHY?! I have no idea, but I’m pleasantly surprised. I have been planning on knitting a Gryffindor scarf for the last Harry Potter movie, and wearing it along with my cape or something. Yeah, I’m going all out but I grew up with the books and the movies, so it’s okay. :D
We get a set of straight needles from my grandmother who can’t use them anymore because of her hands, and some starter yarn. After much searching around, we FINALLY found the store. The moment we walk in, you feel like you can just plop down on the couch and gab about knitting. There was a customer on the couch already immersed in her projects, and when I mentioned the scarf idea she piped up and told me about a book full of HP patterns, and what color red to get. It was fantastic!
The staff were SO nice, which is not something you can ignore when you’re such a novice among yarn and needles. They were incredibly helpful in finding the best books for us — but unfortunately they were out of the ones we got, so we got «Knit Fix» and «Son of Stitch N’ Bitch,» which, after reading them, are for advanced knitters…:\
We got our yarn and we’ve spent the last few days knitting and unraveling. Unfortunately for us, we don’t know how to start the second row… so…we may come in for a class soon enough!

I couldn’t be happier that this is my LYS (local yarn shop)! Sudha, Saloni and their staff (Dolores, Maggie, Hannah) are all so wonderful. You can stumble into the shop and will always find a few knitters sitting in a chair or on the sofa working on projects. Instead of knitting in a shop, it’s like knitting in a girlfriend’s living room (the chandelier and mirror are beautiful), surrounded by her yarn stash and gorgeous samples of her work. Sudha can knit her own project, take a peek at your pattern, put her project down, and immediately fix the problem you’ve been trying to fix for 2 hours in a matter of minutes. It’s incredible.
The only bad things I can think of about Nine Rubies are the metered parking (tickets are $ 35!) and the fact that sometimes they don’t have the yarn you want in stock. They can suggest alternative yarns or offer to order it for you, but if you want it *now* it’s a bummer.
