Small dinner portions. A couple of the spoons and knives were dirty. Shrimp tempura seems to be from frozen package. Wait staff friendly.

Came here for lunch. We were a party of 7 and there was only one other party there. Our server was pleasant. Our food came out at all different times with a gap of 15 – 30 min between dishes. So 3 people had their food and 4 didn’t. When I got my food it was cold. The Katsu sauce tasted funky like it was mixed with robitussin. I wouldn’t come back here unfortunately.

Only came here because the other joint Koyeba was closed. Bad mistake. Should have looked at Unilocal first but we were hungry so didn’t really look at it. When we got in, we do as all Unilocalers do, look at reviews to see what is good to eat. Apparently nothing on the menu is really that good. Well, the reviews were mostly right. I’d like to give the place more stars but it was empty besides 2 other parties and the emptiness can’t be wrong. We gave the place a shot. Ordered a couple of rolls and a bento box. Funny thing is the chef does sushi and the cooked food by himself. Food was okay. Not the right flavor in the miso soup, and the agedashi tofu was breaded weird. The sushi was ok as was the bento box but nothing to Unilocal about. It has normal sushi prices at below average quality. Staff was nice but as one of 3 parties in there they weren’t swamped or anything. I wish them the best but they need to up the quality of the food some. We probably won’t be back.

The sushi is thoroughly underwhelming. Tiny slivers of fish, bland taste, sloppily made… just«eh» in all respects. $ 33 for two bad rolls and a Coke. If it wasn’t for the pleasant, friendly waitress who smiled and was attentive, the review would be one star.

Worst sushi restaurant i’ve been to by far! And ive been to many sushi restaurants. Being a food lover, i came to san fran to eat lots and lots of bomb food. Let me just say that this sushi restaurant is a no-no. The sashimi was NOT fresh and the prices were overpriced. And there were no customers except for me and my family. DONTEVEREATHERE!

Didn’t have high hopes for this place but also didn’t expected the food to be that bad. Believe me, it was. The waitress was so friendly, but the food was such a no-no. I decided to give this place a try on an early dinner monday night. There was no one. Seriously. I ordered their beef okonomiyaki donburi and it was the worst thing i’ve tasted in a japanese restaurant. It was tasteless and their beef was hard and chewy. This place is pretty pricey for its location too. Not coming back for sure!

i’m a big fan of mom and pop spots. so here’s my secret to finding great places to eat – i look for places that have really good and really bad reviews. i find that there are a crap ton of people who think they know food but are just letting outlets like Unilocal boost their egos to the point of thinking that they are real food critics. often i find that those people are the ones who for example, really enjoy garbage like ramen dojo. that place was FOUL but so many bay area people swear by it. that said, i skimmed through the one star reviews because i found them to be too long winded and pompous. the service was fantastic when i went on a saturday night. my party and another party stayed for over an hour enjoying our dinners. they didn’t rush us out in a hurry like many other places would. it has a nice chill ambiance. perfect for enjoying your meal slowly with some sake or tea. i liked that our food was brought out one by one instead of all dumped on our tables at once like some other places. this way, we can enjoy each dish at a time(there’s a reason why the french practice slow eating… now those people know food!). we ordered the agedashi tofu, hamachi collar, tokyo breeze, salmon, butterfish, and tuna sashimi. for two people, this was perfect. the tofu was hot and fresh. loved the bonito flakes on top. the hamachi was really good. the meat was juicy, but of course, my favorite part of it is the nice char from the grill. maybe more people should try it because it is fantastic. the sashimi was fresh and buttery. i don’t soak mine in soy sauce to destroy the flavor like some people do, so i enjoyed it.

It’s seldom I ever give a 1 star review. Usually, I’ll just swear a place off and keep it to myself. But Hop On Sushi gave me lots of time to write this in my head, during my very, very, very long lunch. First, kudos to the waitress, who tried her best to make things not suck, but she could only do so much. Food was mediocre. Sushi/Sashimi combo was 2 pieces of salmon sushi, 1 tuna, 1 hamachi, 1 tamago, and 6 pieces of thin pre-sliced salmon, masquerading as sashimi, plus one piece of snapper and your standard California roll filler. Really better described as «salmon sushi with and without rice, with some friends». None of it seemed bad, but neither it very good. The table service was OK. The waitress gets a 7 – 8 for trying, and for bringing me edamame when the food took so long to show up. However, the owner/sushi guy gets a fail. Although the only patron sans food, I had to wait 20 minutes for it. See, the owner was instead talking to «business partners», who apparently are the folks who are going to re-do his menu. Bad choice. To finish the perfect storm, they couldn’t get the register working. Between waiting on my credit card, finally saying«I’ll just pay cash», and waiting for the owner(again) to manually unlock the register, 20 minutes to pay. At lunch. As the only person in the place. One of those visits which just leaves a bad taste in your mouth, and keeps you going down the street to one of the excellent establishments lining 25th Ave.

No thank you. Fish quality highly suspect(we didn’t dare finish it as we were sure it would lead to late night toilet visits), my firecracker roll’s fish tasted more like chicken, steak was rubbery and hard to chew, service was slow. Prices were decent but still not worth it when there are far better sushi restaurants in the area. On the plus side, it is walking distance to Snowee where we enjoyed a nice dessert that washed away our sorrows.

Hop on Sushi has star ratings all over the board, from 1 to 5 stars. I wrote my Unilocal buddy the following message: «Do you feel like living dangerously and trying it with me? The reviews are all over the place.» I wasn’t sure what to expect, but with a 3 star average, I didn’t expect greatness. One of my guilty pleasures is reading Michael L’s reviews on Unilocal: I decided after reading Michael’s 4 star review, it was worth a try. My daring Unilocaler friend and I ordered: * Caterpillar roll — My favorite item here, not the best I’ve tried, but respectable for sure. * Steamed vegetables — Not bad. * Beef Udon — The noodles seemed over-cooked, but it was decent. I appreciated that the broth was not overly salty and the beef was tasty. * Chicken Donburi — Oyako don, chicken, egg, and rice. Tasted like comfort food, and perhaps not the highest quality chicken meat. We asked if they could hold the MSG, and they said they could. I really appreciated their conscientiousness. They guided me to order only items that could be made without MSG. The atmosphere was pleasant, though I could’ve done without the TV. The service was attentive and friendly. It was a good setting for a chill dinner with a friend.

Never. Ever. Again. Ever. My boyfriend and I gave this place a chance even though it was completely empty at dinner time on a Saturday night(worst decision ever made). We were greeted right away and sat at our table. The friendly waitress immediately brought us water along with the menus and also tea shortly after I asked. The tea did not taste like tea, it tasted like hot water. How do you mess up tea??? This should have been our second clue. I ordered the agedashi tofu, deep fried calamari appetizer and amaebi nigiri. My boyfriend ordered the cherry blossom roll and chirashi don(but with salmon only) which included a miso soup. The miso soup was saltier than normal but it was nothing special. The sauce for the agedashi tofu is different than any sauce I have ever had at any Japanese restaurants. I really don’t even know what sauce it is but it tasted really sour. The deep fried calamari had absolutely NOFLAVOR, not even salt or pepper. It came with this weird pink sauce that tasted okay but I had to add my own seasoning. The amaebi was ok, smaller than usual and the deep fried head had no flavor. Again. All my food came first and my boyfriend’s food didn’t come for another 20+ minutes. The cherry blossom roll tasted okay, we’ve had better. The salmon bowl was THEWORST sashimi EVER. You can tell it was not fresh and still half frozen. The thing was so cold you couldn’t really taste the salmon flavor at all. It was like eating ice. And on top of that, they drizzled some olive oil on top of it? huh? Bottom line is: we have been to MANY Japanese restaurants and this was by far the worst one so far. The mandatory 1 star is for the nice friendly waitress.

My review would be would be similiar to «May S» review here & wished I had read her review before eating at the restaurant. Just horrible! We walked in this past Friday and was greeted by a friendly waitress… she walked us over to our table and asked«would you like some Edamame» — We said sure.(We were charged $ 3.95 for it). At the end of the meal, the waitress asked us(which include 2 kids — 5&7 years old) would we like some dessert, some mochi? Kids said yes & we nodded ok… and they got their favors. We were charged 4.95 per plate… two small mochi for $ 4.95 x two. AFTERTHAT, DOYOUREALLYEXPECTMETOCOMEBACK??? I thought they want more business, by advertising themselves via Living Socials deals. They are NOT going to get my business again for sure. How much is a few peas & a few mochi to keep the clients happy to return again? Just to be fair… now I can rate the food. The fish(hamachi/salmon) we had was a touch on the cold side. Just like it was taken out of the freezer a few hours ago, but haven’t completely thawed out. The teriyaki beef was tasteless. The bread coating on the chicken Karaage was thick and the chicken was dry. The gyoza was so-so. We ordered one roll — Cherry Blossom… the presentation of the roll itself was disappointing. It wasn’t a «Wow». It was just ok. Had much better rolls in other Japanese restaurants. One star… for the waitresses friendiness. We had our plates changed & our tea/water cups filled when they were ½ emptied. The tea was good. They offered us more ginger & wasibi when the little dish was empty. I’m sure they are just doing their job of upselling with the edmame & mochi. I still gave them a 15% tip & just hope that the waitresses are NOT the owner of the restaurant.

The ambiance is ok, not great but not bad. The sushi rolls are normal, nothing special to write home about but they are over priced. This is a very expensive restaurant if you order any of the«larger» rolls. The service is very slow as well. There were 2 onus and dinner an hour and 45 mins. Too long!!!

From the outside, it wasn’t very appealing but because my classmates were already inside, I decided to join them. The food was good, and I really like their beef teriyaki. Definitely better than average. Sashimi tasted fresh, but my salmon was cold– like chilled-cold. Nevertheless, it was still god. The server was very nice. There were 4 of us and she split the bills to 4. She even offered to wash my other classmate’s(who brought her own lunch) lunch box. Now that’s extra service!

Considering this place was near my apartment, I couldn’t help but try to give it a chance. I came here on a Sunday after lunch and it was kinda quiet. I grabbed an order of the negihama, spicy tuna roll, escolar(butterfish) nigiri, and the Snow White roll. The Snow White roll had too much of the«spicy» sauce, the escolar wasn’t too buttery(resembled more like white tuna), but the former two rolls were decent as it was. Prices were okay, and the service girl was really sweet and cute. I would probably come back and give another chance.

I keep passing by here and I finally caved in. I ordered tamago and some beef udon. Tamago tasted pretty good. There wasn’t a disproportionate amount of rice and the tamago itself wasn’t too sweet. I would have liked an airy texture but it’s hard to ask for it all. The beef udon was standard fair as well. The broth was thankfully not salty. The cook didn’t skimp on beef or udon noodles in the bowl either. The restaurant was empty(Sunday afternoon) and was quiet. After we paid our bill the staff were nice enough to let us stay to watch the football game on the screen.

3.5 stars. This is a new addition to the bunch of restaurants on 25th ave. It sure has a wacky name. I tried their bento box with beef teriyaki, tempura, and sashimi. It was also served with miso soup and salad. Well, the soup and the salad is just some below average stuff, so unless you’re famished, you are not obligated to finish it. I quite liked the beef teriyaki(grilled to a pinkish perfection), and the tempura(so crispy!). The rice is also cooked really well. However, I think their sashimi is a bit lacking. The presentation was quite nice, but the fish didn’t strike me as more than just average. Some of my coworkers noted that their food isn’t as good. Quality control issue maybe? Given that they just opened, it is very likely. So, this place is so far so good. Will it beat all the Japanese restaurants in San Mateo? I doubt it, but it is a decent spot if you’re in the area and want some teriyaki.

Hop on Sushi is a growing trend for new japanese eateries: no japanese décor at all. this former cookie locale eschews typical cookie cutter japo cuteness. décor is modern chic. flatscreen front and center. sushi bar integrated into the right wall. only 4ish seats. eats: sashimi morawase(13 piece, 17.95) –2 hamachi –2 butterfish –2 paper thin tako –4 tuna: kind of bland, mushy –4 salmon most sashimi fresh, but small portions/cuts sashimi selection boring temaki: –expect to spend $$ here, portions small –usual japanese entrees, appetizers labeled«starters» –service not a problem.(«hop to» service) –waiters/waitress dressed in black, no doubt a tribute to hop sing.(or jet li) –maybe chirashi(14.95) a better option, an option to taste test the sushi rice…
