Ethan Allen

Ordering Hunter Douglas blinds through Ethan Allen is not worth the
time or hassle. The fact that you pay more for the Ethan Allen design
and service experience just adds insult to injury. We ordered the
blinds for our remodel in June 2015. Six weeks later when I called to
check on the status of the order I was told that the blinds couldn’t
be ordered until the installer verified the measurements and we had
«accidentally» been left off his schedule and he was so, so busy that
he probably couldn’t fit us in for another couple of weeks. The
blinds were finally ordered in July and then we were notified that we
had picked a popular fabric, which was back-​ordered until October.
I called in October to check on the status and was told that the
blinds had been in for a while, but the installer was so, so busy that
we just hadn’t made it to the top of the cue yet. We didn’t get our
binds fully installed until early November. Unfortunately, one of the
blinds was defective. Even more unfortunately, the installer hung it
anyway so that we had to go through the hassle of trying to get back
on his so, so busy schedule to get it fixed or replaced.
It is now seven months later and we are hearing from Ethan Allen that
the replacement shade has been in for several weeks, but the installer
is so, so busy that it is hard to work us in to his schedule.
Complaining to the store manager has done absolutely no good. It is unbelievable that Ethan Allen charges a premium for service when I suspect we would have been further along in this project if we had simply used Home Depot.
Although we love the Hunter Douglas brand and we still needed to order
window coverings for the second half of the house, we did not want to
continue to work with Ethan Allen. A friend recommended Rebarts in
San Carlos and we have been extremely pleased. The design
consultation took place in our home so the measurements were taken and
the blinds ordered on that same day. Five weeks later the blinds
arrived and were installed. It is difficult to express just how much
easier, faster and cheaper it has been to work with Rebarts. We also
found that Rebarts was more knowledgeable about the Hunter Douglas
brand, and we got better advice and consultation as a result.

Ungracious and unfriendly staff. Not even a hello or a smile. Came in to outfit our new home and got the sense we would have had better service if my wife was wearing a fur and carrying a poodle under her arm. Pretty uppity for a store located in a strip mall next to a Petco. Won’t be back. Will spend our money elsewhere.

I have been back twice to work with Rowena, a terrific person and extremely helpful. She helped me furnish 2 rooms and spent the extra time giving me options, trying to find the best price, suggesting floor items if suitable, and guiding me to good, quality pieces. I never felt pressured to buy the most expensive item (or anything, really), and the way she assembled the fabrics, sizes, different pieces, colors, woods, etc, allowed me to visualize the look. She had some great suggestions, and I am very happy with the overall outcome. I would definitely recommend her if you want friendly, courteous, expert design service.

Ethan Allen’s furniture designs are beautiful and of great quality. However, I am really disappointed in your service and will not return to furnish the rest of our home with your designs.
Having spent a rather significant amount of money on furniture for our daughter’s room, this past May, I am surprised that we are still waiting for her bed to arrive this October.
The initial delivery was set for June. I took the day off of work to wait for the delivery at the set appointment time. An hour prior to delivery my husband was contacted that the bed arriving was damaged and a new one would need to be made but the rest of the furniture would be delivered.
Since we had a delivery appointment for June and a delivery set, we made room for the new furniture. The new dresser, end tables and mirror were dropped off and our daughter’s mattress was now on the floor. What was a one night situation, has now been 4 months.
Today, you finally arrived to install her bed. My husband took the day off of work to meet the delivery. Too bad your team didn’t bring the screws needed to install the headboard or the frame… REALLY?
To even add more insult– your team said it was at the warehouse and would probably NOT make it back again today.
We have taken two days off of work, had our daughter without a bed for 4 months and making it happen today was not even considered. So sorry Ethan Allen, we were inconveniencing you.

We have been very happy with our purchases here. To be fair, we’ve ordered smaller pieces, mostly non upholstered and purchased a few clearance pieces. For orders, the wait was on the longer side, but they had to make them (which makes sense to me, how could they estimate what people might want ahead of time?). Also, they told us that it would take awhile up front and there were no surprises.
The custom pillow we ordered to work with a bench was perfectly matched and the fabric we chose is durable and pretty.
We worked with the manager Monique, who besides being just completely awesome, really «got» our style and what we were looking for. She gave us great tips on how to make and design the custom piilow to get maximum impact.
Monique also gave us great tips and suggestions for how to make each piece work in our room – including things like accessories.
We’re in between places at the moment and not doing complete furnishing, and we went with flexible pieces that could work in many different contexts and Monique was great at identifying how to do that.
I got the sense from this store, that they want to take the time to get to know you, and your needs in order to help you find the «right now» (well, 6 – 8 weeks to be fair) pieces that can work for a long time as things grow and change in your home. At least that is how I see working with them.
Mostly what I was surprised about what how we were able to find pieces that really fit our very modern tastes within what appears to be a more conventional showroom.
Summary: when we have needs for furnishing in a more permanent way, Monique and her team in San Mateo will be able to help us in a thoughtful, considered way that will save us time and money in the long run and work with our modern style.

We worked with Susanna to get a couch for our house. She was fabulous. She really listened to us and came to the house to see what we were looking for. She offered some good recommendations and worked with us to find the right thing.
We were happy with the delivery, etc. We didn’t experience the issues that some of the other reviewers mention below. I do think the receptionist is not super friendly.

They outright LIE about their delivery estimates. I have to agree with several reviewers about the service. Absolutely outrageous that my furniture delivery was pushed out by another month, bringing us to 12 weeks waiting for our furniture. The design process was good, but it is absolutely unacceptable to give bogus delivery estimates. Won’t be shopping here again.

I was swindled! I purchased two of the same recliners on the same day. One i could see in the store and based on what that one looked like i placed the order. I received one that was nicely tailored and one with a large open flap of material on the back that is ugly. I contacted customer service, who first said they would order a new back for the second chair. After waiting two months for this repair, they now say that their specs changed between manufacture of the first chair and the second chair and they cannot repair the second chair to look like the first one.
No one on the sales staff alerted me to thus when i purchased both chairs — specifically purchasing another based on the representation and look of the one presented in the store. This is such a lack of integrity. They misrepresent their products and don’t stand behind them. They should take this chair back and refund my money because it’s not what I ordered.

In my previous review, I forgot to mention how happy we were with Ethan Allen delivery. Everything we ordered arrived sooner than expected :-)

What a mixed experience I am having right now with Ethan Allen;

— Customer Service after purchase. We ordered several pieces but it all centered around a custom couch. the order was placed late March. In late May, after we got notification that it should arrive in a week, they realize the order was never processed and they had to start over.
–In talking with manager of the location they cannot even figure out how to do a rush or work with me on fair dispensation due to the loss of my time waiting for the order. The arrogance or lack of carrying on the Customer Service side truly makes me wonder about doing business in the future.
From Reading the other reviews now, this seems like a very consistent problem.
When you but with them just be prepared for a rocky ride to get actual delivery.

Connie Barack was our interior designer and she was the best!!! If you need some guidance, ideas or a new look for your home, Connie will provide the road map to steer you in the right direction. She is an absolute pleasure to work with and really listens to your ideas. She was able to repurpose some of our possessions which saved dollars and our new items are just lovely. I highly recommend Connie as she made the dreams for our home a reality.

Ordered new table pads in January; arrived March. The first set didn’t fit and the second set has yet to arrive; now mid-​April.
I’ve called four times, gone in three times and was just hung up on. I was told during my last visit that I wouldn’t have had this problem if the pads were for an Ethan Allan table. IT WAS AN ETHAN ALLAN TABLE THAT WAS DISCONTINUED. Give me my dining room pads so I can avoid this place forever.

This review is for the designer Cindy Kline, as I think the quality of her work is worth writing for.
She is truly exceptional. There are some designers that are good at the aesthetics, others are good at project management, and others are nice and professional, and work with your budget even if it is limited. Hardly, you find a designer that can understand your family needs, gets a beautiful design, and is excellent at managing your time and budget, and project.
Cindy has all these characteristics, and for this reason, I keep going over to EA to add to my furniture. I have not found her level of professionalism and problem solving skills in other designers (from competitive stores). As an example, I went to EA to buy a coffee table for my living room. However, the big issue in the room was that the furniture arrangement was off, and I needed to rearrange the sofa before I could get more furniture. Cindy came to my house and in few seconds figure out what other designers couldn’t get, about moving furniture from and to various rooms to improve the flow. I moved my china cabinet, moved a painting to another room, painted the living room as she suggested, and got the room to look impressive. And yes, I bought the coffee table, which adds to the sofas and chairs that I got 5 years ago from EA, and to the china cabinet that I also bought in Ethan Allen 14 years ago (they are in excellent conditions). And although, I paid more for the coffee table that I was expected, I am glad to get a piece that goes with the right scale and light of the room. I would have had to pay a lot to a designer to get such quality design.
Finally, I appreciate the fact that Cindy is professional, and understanding of my budget limitations. I have pieces from iKea, and a desk from Michaels that is used for homework, and I don’t want to spend a fortune on the room where we eat and hangout. I do like to invest on good pieces that will last, but still look trendy.
Cindy has helped me choose the pieces from the store that look as trendy as RH or C&B. Yet, she does not criticize my selection. I can ask her to prioritize the purchase of furniture if my budget is $ 1000 or more, based on my family needs: and she will suggest the proper piece that I need to get from Ethan Allen to make my life easier.
Overall, I have had good experience with the store, and I certainly recommend that you consult with Cindy Klein.

I like to give them a five star but unfortunately, there are a couple things wrong with their operation.
First, the positives: I love the quality of their products, and the designs. The designers/​sales ladies are polite, helpful and knowledgeable. And I appreciate the home visit by the designer. The contracted delivery crew were clean and careful with the furniture.
But…
After I made my purchase, I got an email from a customer service lady saying that I will get an bi-​weekly update of the status of my purchase. Well, that was the only email I got from her. A few weeks later, I got a phone call from customer service to arrange a delivery date. The lady told me that they will delivery the desk first and my sofas will come later (but no schedule date yet). OK, that’s fine. However, on the morning of schedule delivery, I got a phone call saying that both desk and sofas are ready. I wasn’t expecting the sofas to be deliver on that day so I still had my old sofas in my family room. The delivery crew (subcontracted by Ethan Allen) was nice enough to move my old sofas to the garage. One of the sofa was the wrong color. I called my sales lady and she was very helpful in clarifying the problem. The right sofa was delivered the second day.
The sofas were custom made. But rather than having the sofas sitting in the factory for a couple weeks to lighten up the chemical smell, they probably rushed the delivery to us. So for the first two weeks, we have to endure the terrible smell (yes, I have placed baking soda around the sofas).
Overall, I like Ethan Allen. The purchase experience could have been «five star» if the customer service people did what they were suppose to do. I went back recently and purchased a desk lamp and it was delivered to us within two weeks by UPS. That was pretty quick.
Oh, another good thing about Ethan Allen is that it offers free delivery for any purchase. Room and Board charges delivery (by trip).

Unfortunately I have to agree with the other reviewers regarding their crappy service. After buying a bed for our master bedroom here a few weeks ago, I decided to buy another one for our guest bedroom, but the saleslady who helped me before said she was so busy she didn’t have time to help me right now (and made it clear that if my order was bigger, then things would be different). What? Way to make a repeat customer feel appreciated. That being said, their furniture is high quality and inexpensive. It’s too bad but I’m going to take my business elsewhere.

I wanted to take a minute to write a quick review about the customer service my boyfriend and I received here over the weekend.
We were sectional shopping all weekend and my parents suggested Ethan Allen as they’re apparently known for their quality and selection.
Upon entering the store we were greeted warmly and then allowed to start browsing on our own. Sales Consultant, Gigi came over after a few minutes to feel out what we were looking for. I felt that she asked all the appropriate questions around budget and style, without being intrusive. She then offered to show us the catalog and some floor models that she felt would be to our liking. They were. We were able to find a couple of options that were exactly what we liked. At that point she then explained to us all the aspects of EA that make it a cut above other furniture stores (the fabric selection, frame and cushion quality, warranty, etc.) Again, timing felt very appropriate.
We ended up liking one enough to request a quote. Gigi really took the time to go through the fabric and cushion and style selections with us until we found something we really liked and was as budget conscious as possible.
Unfortunately, after all of her hard work, kindness and effort the sectional was out of our budget. But she had prepared us for that as well and did not try to push us into financing in the end. She gave us the quote, a catalog and all the information on the sofa that we could possibly want and need. If it had been just a bit closer to our budget we would have been sold on her customer service alone.
If you’re looking for good quality furniture and have the budget for it I would recommend visiting this store and asking for Gigi. I don’t think you’ll be disappointed.

Absolutely HORRIBLE customer service.
The designer who greeted us, Theresa, was really intrusive and kept repeating the same tag lines over and over about the furniture. We heard you the first time, telling us three times that you call a chair your «soft english» is just annoying.
When we finally did have a question, we tried to ask the lady sitting behind the desk, Lavinia. She was rude and it seemed like we were inconveniencing her to ask a question. She promptly pushed us back to Theresa which did nothing more than raise my blood pressure.
I will NEVER purchase a piece of furniture from this place, and would never in good conscious recommend it to anyone else.

My first purchase with an Ethan Allen store was back in 1999. I still have my pieces from 1999 as they are high quality pieces (sofa table and bistro table and chairs). I have since made a lot of my purchases from Ethan Allen as I met a designer I like working with (Cindy Kline). Cindy has helped me decorate my living room, master bedroom, entry and helped with indivual pieces in my daughter’s room, son’s room and kitchen. I have enjoyed working with her for at least five or more years now.
Cindy has been great to work with as she comes in and helps me pick out wall colors to coordinate with everything and comes back to help accessorize and place items, even helping to hang artwork. I have enjoyed all of my pieces and have enjoyed having a highly qualified partner in helping me decorate my home, making it a warm and inviting place.
Deliveries do take some time, furniture and window treatments (which keeps me from giving them five stars). Most often I am not in a rush so it is not a problem but this should be something the designer informs you of when you are in the store shopping — if not be sure to ask before you fall in love with a piece so that your expectations are set before you pay. Once when I needed a sleeper chair to arrive before my son was born (and he ended up coming a week early), Cindy made sure I received my chair in time (it came two or three weeks earlier than promised). I have also enjoyed shopping for accessories as Cindy will bring some over the house for me to see how they look and then I can purchase and keep that same day those items which I like.
Overall I would not hesitate in recommending Ethan Allen, and especially Cindy Kline, for decorating your home — assuming they carry styles that you love. It has saved me a ton of time and stress shopping in stores and on the internet (and in returning items) so that I can use that time with family and friends instead!

Ethan Allen is a candy store for adults with really good taste in furniture and a fat wallet. I love wandering through their store, but haven’t bought anything because my dog and kids would destroy anything nice in short order. When the kids are gone and the dog is too old to jump on the couch anymore, I’ll head straight to Ethan Allen and buy some of their lovely wares.

Oh Unilocal,where where you when I needed you!!! I didn’t think to check the reviews before I placed my order. I wish my smart phone had an application to sent out alerts when I am unaware am I am in stores like this one.
I am so sorry I placed an order with Ethan Allen. It has been a horrible experience and it is not over yet. I am waiting for a chair I ordered in January. It has been delayed 3 times — initial estimate was end of March, then mid-​April, then mid-​May. Now, who knows?
When I ordered from Crate and Barrel they called me to confirm delivery twice, told me how to clean my new furniture, had white glove delivery who told me again about care of my furniture, and finally they checked to make sure I was completely happy a few days after delivery which happened exactly on time and on the original schedule.
Ethan Allen does none of these things. Never ever again will I buy from this store or this company.
