History

Established in 2005.

We are the affordable luxury Pet Resort on the Central Coast, specializing in dog daycare, dog & cat boarding, bathing/​grooming, and training. But, we are more than just a Pet Boarding Resort we are also a non-​profit business that provides support to our mentoring program called Alpha Academy. So when your dog stays with us you are giving back to the local community and funding a program that helps mentor young adults seeking direction in acquiring the spiritual, emotional, and physical skills necessary to lead successful, responsible, lives. Your dog gets a vacation and you get peace of mind that you are supporting young men in your local community.

Nicole H.

Manager

Nicole’s animal experience comes from her work as a zookeeper, and in veterinary hospitals. She also comes with ten years of experience as a manager/​social worker with a private family/​child services agency. In addition, she has a Bachelor’s degree in Education of the Deaf. When earning this degree, she became fluent in American Sign Language, and although she can still communicate in American Sign Language, she is very much out of practice, «I need to work on that». She also earned a Master’s degree in Marriage, Family, and Child Counseling.

Love this place. I have two dogs I bring for boarding and occasionally day care. The staff is so nice, friendly, and helpful. My boys get a cottage to themselves so they get to sleep together but have plenty of room. I didn’t want them in kennels and this way they have their own room and patio. I love how many play yards they have so I never worry about them being in a yard with dogs they’re not comfortable with. I’m an obsessive dog mom and so thankful I found this place. I actually don’t worry about them when I leave! My skittish little one does great and is now more confident having gone there! Their prices are great and so easy to make reservations unlike some places I talked to. Recommend 100%

Dropped of MJ and Lobo for 11 days while we went on vacation. The staff called a couple times to update us on some events that happened (i.e. one of the dogs chewed up their bed). The dogs seemed tired and a little stressed when we picked them up. My only complaint was that we had scheduled them to be bathed before we picked them up and it didn’t get done. The front desk staff just didn’t get it on the schedule. We probably will use them again.

We took our dog to Thousand Hills Pet Resort so we could go on a trip for our anniversary. Within 4 hours of dropping her off they called us to say she had broken out of the fenced yard and was missing. What? How could this happen? When people entrust their precious animals to a business that exists to care for those animals and keep them safe and they pay money for that service, they expect just that. I asked to see where she had gotten out. They took me to the MAIN gate to the dog yard. The guy slammed his hip against the gate and it just popped right open! REALLY??? Surprising there were any dogs left!
We did not go on our trip, and sacrificed $ 950 we had paid for it. Instead, we spent the weekend out there walking, calling, talking to neighbors, crying and praying. Then we went home at night and laid awake wondering if she was hurt or even alive, if we would ever see. her again. The manager at Thousand Hills kept calling to ask if we understood that he was doing all he could to find her. Not the issue, dude. If you people had done your job — the main responsibility of your business — the efforts to find her would not have been necessary. I am sure he was worried we would take legal action, and was trying to cover his butt.
Our dog finally returned to their compound Sunday morning. She was so tired, hungry and dehydrated that she could no longer resist being caught. Of course we were overjoyed to have her back. Couldn’t wait to get her away from there. The only compensation they offered us for all we had been through was to say that we didn’t owe them any money. Right, like we were going to pay them for that horrible experience! It has been a week and they have not contacted us to see how our dog is or apologize or offer to make up for the vacation we lost. Nothing. Business as usual. I can’t understand how they are still in business.

So thankful to have TH available for my two rescue dogs Lolli and Willa! We have been taking them here a few days a week for the past year+ and couldn’t be happier. The staff is amazing and accommodates my husband and I whenever needed. Highly recommended for any pet owner wanting their dog to feel loved and special!

They should not even get one star. My sweet 32 pound Little Staffy was banned from boarding BEFORE they even evaluated her. They ban specific breeds just based on breed type. Don’t know waste your time with this prejudice place.

Sully the 2-​ish yellow lab mix spent 5 days at Thousand Hills. He is a wee bit shy, but came out of the kennel confident with his tail wagging!!! They said he had a blast playing, with dogs at his play level, which is wild and rough. I LOVE that they matched him with friends like him! He played all morning until i came and got him! Another huge perk! Thank you so much Thousand Hills for loving Sully the way i do and for loving him just the way he is!!!

Every time I go up north or camping in Morro Bay, I drop off my choco lab Belle here. You can make your reservation online. Checking in your pets is an easy, smooth process. Belle gets so excited every time she stays here!!! I bring her blanket, food and snacks in a bag and they label it for you when you get there. They have separate areas for doggy day care dogs and the other side is for dogs who are boarding. My dog gets to play in the large dog area and she has a blast!!! They have a small pool and Belle loves to take a dip! The staff is very friendly and they take very good care of my dog. I’ve requested them to email me some pics of Belle and I got to see it while I was on vacation. I like the fact that the dogs play and run around all day instead of being cooped up in a small kennel. My only two wishes is that they should have a doggy «report card» to let the pet parents know how they did and also have an incentive like board your pets 10 times and get a free nights stay. Other than that I love the property, the staff and everything else!!! I highly recommend Thousand Hills Pet Resort.

We have been boarding our dogs here for 10 years and have had a great experience. The staff is super friendly and has been incredibly accommodating when it comes to boarding our 11 year old Boxer who has recently become higher maintenance due to his health and age. If you want your dog to stay clean and remain inactive, this probably isn’t the place for them. I always refer to Thousand Hills as «summer camp for dogs». They will be filthy and tired when you pick them up (unless you get them groomed there, which is an awesome service)… But personally, I feel that is part of what makes this place great because I know that my dogs remained active and weren’t lonely while there. As far as communicating with the staff, I have had no problems. If your dog has special needs or you have special instructions, such as we do, you need to let them know. I highly recommend Thousand Hills and am grateful for their services and staff!

My two springers board here fairly often and have done so for five years. They are well cared for in our absence and are always excited when we arrive for pick-​up. The staff members always take time to get to know our dogs and their personality quirks. The staff is completely upfront and honest if any issues arise as a result of dog-​on-​dog interactions. They are sensitive to my pets’ needs for daily meds, treat routines, etc. Like other posters, I am disheartened to see one-​star reviews. Yes, your dog may leave dirty. They are playing outside in play areas all day long! You can arrange for a bath prior to your pet being picked up.
Any issues I have had with the dogs while boarding have been addressed and resolved to my complete satisfaction in a very timely manner. Our dogs have been taken to our veterinarian on a couple of occasions at no extra charge.
The staff at Thousand Hills, past and present, are all great people with an interest in the pets. The manager, Emily, like Kyle, Nicole, and Jonny before her, is very competent, friendly, honest, and open. This applies
to the rest of the staff as well.
I am very grateful to the friend who referred us to Thousand Hills. It is our boarding kennel of choice. One final thought – when my dogs are boarding here, I do not worry about them at all. I know they are safe and in very caring, capable hands.

My boxer puppy Zoey (1yr) had a great time here. The prices are amazing, the staff are knowledgeable and attentive, and dogs do not sit in a kennel all day but get to run and play together. I have never met staff that has more genuinely cared about the nuances and details of my pet that matter to me and Zoey. Everyone clearly loves their job. They went above and beyond with cleaning her bed after an accident, calling when Zoey refused to eat and even fed her peanut butter (no charge), and due to a medical condition they made sure she was taking needed breaks from play. I would recommend thousand hills to everyone. They even have heaters in the rooms for when is cold at night! Thank you Thousand Hills Pet Resort for being there for me and my pup.

I’m so sad to see all these one star reviews! I think these people are amazing. They’ve always treated me and the dogs I’ve brought there so nicely. My dogs have enjoyed going there and bolt out to their staff the second I get there. After getting to know the staff like family I know they care about the dogs like family. Yes, if you’re bringing your dog to a daycare your dog should be able to socialize with other animals and no they’re not inattentive. They put dogs into different yards depending on their behavior. It’s carefully thought out and delivered. The daycare also helps with their nonprofits which benefit so many people. I say it’s a win win.

I boarded Harley at Thousand Hills a year ago over Christmas and won’t ever do it again. I’m sure they weren’t abusive to her nor do I think they were in attentive. However, their kennels are gravel outside and my Great Dane is simply not used to running on something other than grass or concrete. When I picked her up the day after Christmas her paws had open bloody (actively bleeding) wounds. When I picked her up they told me they had confined her inside because her paws had «gotten red and irritated» but they never mentioned that her paws were bleeding so bad that she would bleed all over my car and house carpeting. They were incredibly non chalant releasing her to me bleeding paws and all. And when I called each day during her boarding they never mentioned she was injured.

I take my mini Australian Shepherd, Bleu, to Thousand Hills pet resort for daycare. But I may start looking into their training and boarding services as the entire staff has made Bleu’s and my experiences nothing short of amazing. Bleu is always so excited to arrive, and at pickup he doesn’t even want to leave. Thousand Hills has made such an effort to make me feel welcome and does everything in their power to ensure that Bleu and I are happy.
The facilities are beautiful, and all of the dogs are so well looked after. I felt as though I get special attention every time I arrive, as the whole staff is so welcoming and nice, but from what I observed these guys make everyone feel like this. They are 100% genuine though! Thousand Hills is truly the best place for your pup in San Luis Obispo.

I have a 1.5 yo pitbull mix, who has always had a ton of energy, and Thousand Hills has been a lifesaver for me. I baby the heck out of my pup, and was definitely hesitant to start bringing him to daycare. But after seeing how happy it makes him, now I take him almost every day while I’m at work. He is always SO happy when I pick him up and it helps take some energy out of him (although he’s still got a ton left in him after ;)). It’s good to know my dog is socializing and being cared for.
The staff know him by name, and as soon as they see my car pull up they’ve already sent someone to come get him. A big part of what makes me come back is knowing the staff actually care about my pup, and genuinely seem excited to see him.
I started using Thousand Hills for boarding as well, and he loves it there. Always happy to see me when I pick him up, but never seems any different, which is a good thing. He also has slight separation anxiety — so just the fact that he’s happy there when I’m gone is a big thing for me. And this is coming from someone who never spent a night apart from her pup for the entire first year we brought him home (and I wonder where the separation anxiety came from ;)).
Not sure where the negative reviews are coming from — I’ve had nothing but great experiences with this place and I completely trust them with my pup, who is my liiifeee. I would definitely recommend this place!

I am writing this review while completely heartbroken.
I picked my Standard Poodle puppy, Pixie, up this morning after staying at Thousand Hills Pet Resort for a week. This was the first time I had ever left her. When she got in to my car she was whimpering — that continued most of the way home which I assumed had to do with the fact that she was happy to see me however, I realized that she was in pain when she placed her paw in my hand and I felt stickers all over. I was forced to pull over to remove one that was deeply lodged in her pad. Upon my arrival at home, my husband and I went to work to remove NINETY-​FIVE (95!!!) stickers from her paws — many were lodged in the pads of her paws. This process took almost an hour.
Right now, she is currently limping even though the stickers have been removed. To say that I am upset is an understatement — I am heartbroken and furious. Please see attached photo — this pile does not even include the pile that i removed while pulled over on the side of the road.
Some of these burs were fresh (on the surface) however, others were so deeply entrenched that it took two adults to hold her still and remove others that were lodged deep in her coat and against her skin.

I was happy with their day-​care services for a number of months, but they’ve decided to implement some new bigoted policies regarding how they segregate their clients’ dogs. Specifically, dogs that are considered «potentially dangerous» e.g. pit mixes, dobermans, etc are segregated from other dogs regardless of their temperament. I have a pit mix who is by ALL accounts (including Thousand Hills’ staff) a complete sweetheart. Yet, because she is a pit bull mix, she is only allowed to play with 1 – 2 other dogs at a time in a segregated boarding area. Half the reason I bring here there is so she has a chance to socialize with other dogs and grow up into a well-​socialized, good dog.
Thousand Hills has flatly denied her that chance, simply because of her breed.
By contrast, ALL other dog daycare places in the area segregate by size and temperament, NOT by breed.
To boot, when I inquired as to why my dogs were moved out of the daycare area and into the boarding area, a manager gave me a line of bull and didn’t bother mentioning their new policies. I got the real story from other staff members after the fact. Since confronting the manager about the apparent lies, his fall-​back story was that he simply had no clue and was just reaching for something to say. Either reason reflects quite poorly.
I’ve no reason to think my dogs were treated poorly, per-​se, but I refuse to give my business to a company that supports these kinds of policies.

My babies stayed here for a few days over Thanksgiving break. When I returned, they appeared happy, healthy and clean. There was a small snafu when it came to feeding… instead of a teaspoon of wet food, they were given a tablespoon — big difference for small dogs. Thankfully, they survived (I’m sure they were very happy eating wet food instead of dry kibble.) THPR is clean, well-​designed for dogs of all sizes and they did a nice job caring for my two cute little dogs. I’d take my little dogs back to Thousand Hills for another stay at doggie sleepover camp — they loved it (yes, they told me so!) Thanks THPR!
