Awesome shop with tons to look at. I usually go for the «glass» and incense, and they have a variety of both. These other reviews surprise me. I’ve only had great experiences here and the staff has been nothing but nice. It’s not a corporate business with staff asking if you need help every time they see you. It’s not that kind of place. But they always seem willing to help if you ask.

I don’t know what’s up with the bad reviews. I have always had a great experience at The Sub. I was there a couple days ago and interacted with all three employees — they were all great, one even went out of her way to find what I was looking for. 5 stars!

Will never shop here and will tell everyone I know what happened today. My wife requires life sustaining oxygen and carries her tank in a backpack. She was told she had to leave her pack at the front. When my wife explained she needs her oxygen to survive and can not leave it at the front counter. They told her she would have to leave. Never has she felt so discriminated against. Complete violation of ADA law!

Never been here, heard mixed reviews about it, but after today I’ll NEVER go there. My good friend was discriminated against today, where employees of the shop really need an update with customer service skills and need to understand that without oxygen, she can die. Now I know a lot of people have not had the time to understand or deal with such a medical difficulty as my friend does, but just because the employees don’t understand, doesn’t mean my friend has to leave because she can’t put her backpack at the front. I’m pretty sure if my friend stayed in the store when asked to leave, and if the cops showed up, the cops would have laughed at the employees.
And as for the one star, I’ll give them one so they can feel better about themselves after how rude they treated a wonderful human being.

I called ahead and made sure that this store had the item I required, but when I arrived the clerk would not sell it to me because I had used an «illegal term» — I had not. Both of the ladies behind the counter were extremely condescending and rude. I will avoid this shop from now on at all costs, as it is not an experience I would like to repeat.
Another note, they don’t let you bring in bags or other belongings due to suspicion of stealing. If a business does not trust their customers enough to let them carry their OWN bag, why should the customers trust the shady employees with personal belongings? It’s backwards and archaic. I wish I had read some of the Unilocal reviews before going, I could have saved some gas and a headache.

Not sure what the heck all the bad reviews are about! Every time I have come in all the employees have been incredibly nice! And I totally understand why they have the purse/​backpack rule. I always leave mine in the car but I can see how easy it is to steal in this store. There was an incident today where 4 teenagers were in the store while I was there and even though they left their bags at the front, when they were leaving the censors went off. I guess one of the girls was hiding something in her pants and took off running. Also they did call the police, FYI, so don’t steal! There is definitely a theft problem in this store and I can see why they are trying to stop it. (They were also very knowledgable about the body jewelry!) One employee apologized for us witnessing the incident but it was pretty interesting to say the least! I love coming here and won’t stop!

No one should shop here. The owner is a soulless bastard. I would love to support this store since it’s a local business and they have cool stuff no one else carries but I refuse to support those who don’t deserve it. I recommend buying online since you’ll probably save money anyway.

Whenever we’re in San Luis, my wife and I always make it a point to visit The Sub. They seem to be constantly upgrading the goods they offer. I did a lot of my Christmas shopping there and they were a great help. They always greet you when you walk in and can answer most questions about products in a snap. Well, usually I won’t kick a shitty business whiles its down, so. just goto
or something else if you’re looking for bongs and pipes.
They have neat stuff here (shirts, posters, blacklight shit), but the owner is a megalomaniac misogynist shitehead, so yea, like Firestone Grill: don’t give this ‘roid head your monies.

They now offer vape products. No one here builds though so this is a great place to get basic tanks and pen batteries. They have a great selection of band tshirts. They also offer water pipes for those over the age of 18.

We stopped here during a vacation because it looked like an interesting store. It is a very eclectic place with a lot of different items, clothing and music. However, when we were walking around the many rooms of the store, I felt something bite me. I looked down and I had little, black bugs all over my ankles and on my shoes. We DO NOT have pets and hadn’t been anywhere else where I might have gotten these bugs and possibly carried them in. These bugs definitely came from the carpet in the store. I started freaking out and then my husband looked down and he saw that he had bugs all over his shoes as well.
We literally ran out of the store and didn’t say anything to the staff since they didn’t even bother to look at us when we came in. It was so gross, we just wanted to get outside and get away from the bugs. We ended up sitting outside the store for 10 minutes shaking out our shoes and pouring water on our feet to get the bugs off and wouldn’t get back into our car until we didn’t see anymore bugs. We ended up wrapping up our shoes in bags to avoid fleas ending up in our car, drove home barefoot and immediately washed the clothes that we were wearing.
I don’t understand how the staff has not noticed this! So disgusting and would never go back! Too bad, your store actually sold some nice/​interesting things.

The sub is the worst head shop I’ve been to EVER due to their customer service. Horrible experience. The staff was completely rude and didn’t help at all. It took them about ten minutes to come back to the glass room after ringing the bell. This would’ve have been fine except the store had been empty and both employees were behind the counter just chatting. The blonde worker with glasses and gauges did not have a clue was she was talking about as far as the quality or where anything came from. As I was trying to explain to her what piece I needed she abruptly said «I can’t sell you anything since you just used an illegal term» because I had said «dab». We ended up at the hole in the sky instead and had an amazing experience. Don’t buy your glass from here!!!

This place is horrible. We walk in, the girl behind the counter tells me I can’t have my purse in the store. My purse holds my wallet, which contains money which I was planning on spending. Fine, I’ll leave it outside. We go into the «smoke room,» my boyfriend who has already picked out a «tobacco» pipe and is waiting for me to inspect a HVY I wanted, accidentally let’s «bong» slip out. The same girl as above tells him he needs to leave immediately and she can’t sale him anything. Well The Sub, you just missed out on about 300 dollars. I understand the language situation, but at least tell the guy he can’t say that instead of being rude and kicking him out. You’re tiny signs that state your policies aren’t working.

Haven’t been in the store sent you still live in the county. So I thought I would come in and take a look around to see what interesting things they had inside. However when I arrived sign on the door that said if you are wearing a backpack or have a large purse then we will ask to hold it up front. I had a small purse that barely hold my wallet and phone and a couple pieces of makeup. I walked in with my little cousin also had a small purse and they asked to hold our purses. I asked them why because our purses for small they were not big and they claimed that we could fit records in our purses which was untrue because our purses were very small. I feel as if we were judged by our appearance because two other Caucasian women came in after us with the same size purses and they let them walk around with their purses. I suggested to them that maybe they should change the sign on the door stating that all purses we’re going to be held at front instead of just large purse is in backpacks because my purse clearly was not a large purse the girl just rolled her eyes and said I will let you know we have a problem with record theft.
This just made the whole entire shopping experience very uncomfortable. I ended up putting my purse in the car and turn my wallet around because I don’t know the girls who work there and I don’t want somebody holding on to my person I don’t know. The whole time the store just felt very uncomfortable and they made you feel like you were a criminal even though I was there to spend money.
I’ve worked in the store before and I believe that if you’re having issues maybe instead of all the employees standing behind the counter talking to one another some of them could walk around the store greeting customers which scares people from wanting to steal because they’re being watched. Rather than making everyone feel uncomfortable they should do their job correctly. I don’t think I will go into the store again I will just use the internet to order anything that I feel I need. I just thought they had some cool patches and pins but it’s not worth feeling uncomfortable.

Such a neat store. This is seriously the best place to hit up when you are in need of a gift! The store is big so if you aren’t sure what you are looking for, you will probably find something that fits the bill with a little looking around. They support a lot of local events too so if you need something for a neon dance or for Pride they definitely have what you need! I come here often to pick of new pieces of jewelry, they have a lot of the same stuff you would find at other stores but at a more reasonable price! They have a huge wall of band shirts, cute dresses for girls and I love the selection of hair dye… it was the only place I could find the pink and purple colors I wanted when I was coloring my hair.

Eep! It’s dark and cluttered in here! It feels as if every space in this store is used to sell random stuff; swords, knick knacks, some cheap band shirts both in price and hopefully not in quality. They seem to have a huge amount of stickers and button, something some punk rockers might like. I guess it depends on what time of day you go but I think I’ve missed the less polite staff, the girls working seemed sweet and polite.
Pipes and bongs are on the little pricey side. Nice place to spend if you have a half hour to kill after your sandwich next door.

Edit, Its been a week and I still have not had a single manager or store owner get back to me about the uncomfortable experience I had at their store. Instead, the manager has created Unilocal accounts and fake profiles to accuse me of stealing and call me a «tweaker» simply because her employees failed to provide good customer service. I have filed a complaint with the Better Business Bureau and if I don’t hear back from someone ASAP with an apology, I will be bringing in law enforcement because this manager «Kjertin» is officially guilty of slander. NEWSFLASH: IN ORDER TO PROVIDE GOOD CUSTOMER SERVICE, WHEN SOMEONE MAKES A COMPLAINT, YOU APOLOGIZE AND MOVE ON.
Your 40 years of business doesn’t mean anything when you’re the only gag shop in SLO. You literally have 0 competition for the useless junk you offer so of course you’re going to stay in business, especially in a college town. Your customer service has nothing to do with it. As for «wouldn’t sell to me», that is not how it went. I left without purchasing anything because your staff is rude. The security footage taken from my visit there will completely back up everything I’m saying.
Also, «law abiding»? Your smoke shop sells the metal crack pipes. These ones
No one uses those to smoke tobacco and everyone knows it. Including the police, which is what my family is full of, so I know from a lawful standpoint. If you’re so lawful, WHY ARE YOU SELLING CRACK PIPES?
And I don’t even know who B.H. is. Kjerstin, your store sucks. Not everyone who thinks your store sucks is someone I know, its just that your store sucks. And taking the time to insult your reviewers back and forth is very petty. It does not reflect positively on you as a business at all, so please keep taking cheap shots at everyone who leaves a review because you are only making yourself look bad.

I enjoyed it my first time I visited. After that, it was all downhill. I appreciate places doing deals and giving out free things, but it is such a hassle here! I don’t understand why the employees are so terrified of doing anything not by the book without the managers approval. If the manager is never there, employees should be trusted with the authority to do something a few dollars difference.
Was excited to see the new smoke room — which I was lured into visiting from the exciting Facebook posts and deals — expecting nicer things, but it was more of the same crap! WHY they would «expand» in the way of multiple shelves of Chinese keychain pipes and more yellow-​glass pipes is beyond me. Yellow glass looks like pee. It is obvious that this place cares more about quantity and cheapness than quality. Not a single brand name piece. When you have a smoke shop, you’re expected to carry SOMETHING known.
Cool place for novelty items, but I will not be back until management changes to create a more pleasant experience (where the employees are scared as hell to do anything!) and carry things worth-​while.
*I’m amazed how a shop would stoop down to creating fake reviewers in order to «get back» at other reviewers. The likelyhood of someone being in the store, at the same time as the incident and then going home and creating a Unilocal account to stick up for the store is low.
