Meet the Business Owner

Sam S.

Business Owner

Pre-​R is owned and operated by Sam Slishman, MD and Vanessa Salas.

Dr. Slishman received his BA in Physics and Math from Wesleyan University in 1993, and his Medical Degree from Washington University in 1997. He completed his residency at the University of New Mexico in 2000 and in 2001 earned his board certification in emergency medicine.

Dr. Slishman worked as faculty at the University of New Mexico from 2003 – 2007. In 2003, he founded a nonprofit in Albuquerque, Endorphin Power Company, to help people with drug and alcohol problems.

In 2012 Dr. Slishman decided to make San Luis Obispo his home. Today, he works part-​time with Central Coast Emergency Physicians and Hawaii Emergency Physicians Associated. Occasionally you will find him working on ships or doing relief work in places like Haiti after the 2010 earthquake.

In his free time, Dr. Slishman enjoys tinkering in his shop and working with students at Cal Poly on a variety of medical devices and projects.

I travel quite often to Santa Maria from Henderson NV, When I need to go to go to an Urgent care the service is nill to none. Found Dr. Sam on Unilocal,even though he is in San Luis Obispo, he has made it is to contact him. He is very courteous and helpful for my care that I needed. I didn’t have to leave my home in Santa Maria to see him. We did it over FaceTime. He provided great help and subscribed medication for me. Will use again if any other problems occur. I would of driven to San Luis Obispo, but, weather not to great.

Dr. Sam is amazing! The service that he offers can not compare to any other.
He is tender, compassionate and very knowledgable. If you know exactly what you need (IV) or medicine he’s the one to go to in order to avoid those costly ER visits.

We’ve used Pre-​R several times now since a horrible and horribly expensive trip to the Urgent Care. We absolutely love the service and the attentiveness– and the convenience!
After randomly breaking out into hives 2 days ago, we again called Dr. Sam– and again experienced amazing service.
We texted a photo of what I was dealing with and followed up with a phone conversation– all of which did not require me leaving my hectic life or sitting in a room full of sick people. Dr. Sam constantly checked in with me via text the past few days and called in a prescription that cleared my hives almost completely within a day.
My cost? A suggested donation of $ 70– about 40% of what I would have paid to the Urgent Care.

Last night my little boy split his chin open and I was concerned that it could scar if it wasn’t closed properly. It was late (my little guys were pushing bedtime) and I was going to have to take both of them with me to the ER and be there for goodness knows how long and get a big bill, to boot. Dr. Slishman to the rescue! He was able to be here within 30 minutes. He had my 3 year old completely at ease, did a great job and even involved and got my 8 year old interested in the process. All in a matter of less than 10 minutes. It was such an amazing service to be treated so well, so expeditiously and in the comfort and convenience of our own home (with Pj’s on!). We were reading books and doing bedtime in no time. What a fantastic experience… I highly recommend Dr. Slishman

4th of July means celebration but for a 7-​year-​old having a sparkler for the first time could be a scary thing and as for parents not sure if we should go to the ER or not. We called and left a voice message. Dr Sam called shortly after! We explained what happen, he reassured us our son would be okay and not have to go to the ER especially after we texted him a picture of the burn. He continued to tell us the signs of what to look for, etc, asked questions and told how to treat my son’s skin. As we can hear the fireworks in the background, he was calm, very professional, thorough, and attentive. What’s awesome is he did a follow up the next day checking in to see how our little guy was doing. We will be using Pre-​R when in doubt and highly recommend their service! For our family, it is totally worth the call to Pre-​R especially with our high insurance cost even to a trip to the ER. Thank you so much Pre-​R!

I recently moved to the Central Coast and before I had time to find a primary care physician I found myself needing urgent medical attention. It was early evening and I was scouring the internet to find an Urgent Care center in the area. I found a few, but was horrified by the less than stellar reviews! All had complaints of 2+ hour wait times and exorbitant fees.
While on Unilocal I came across a link to Pre-​R. I submitted a contact form and was contacted by Dr. Sam within a few minutes (it was now 8pm). I explained my situation. Dr. Sam and I discussed my symptoms and he reviewed my medical history. He made the determination that an antibiotic was needed (which was also my assumption), called it into my local pharmacy (speaking to the pharmacist to make sure it would be filled immediately) and by 8:45pm I was
picking up my perscription.
I have medical insurance, but find that, even with a co-​pay, I’m never sure how much they will actually cover. The service Dr. Sam is providing is priceless. I cannot thank him enough.

We had the opportunity to use the services of Pre-​R about a month ago. I had heard about the service through the wonders of social media and it was the first thing that came to mind when my husband was suffering from a swollen, painful finger. He is a contractor and had been doing some demolition work a few days earlier and thought that he may have a splinter or a small piece of metal stuck in his finger. He was getting more and more uncomfortable, but did not want to go to the ER and we thought it would take too long to get an appointment with our primary care doctor. Within 20 minutes of my husband calling, Dr. Slishman and his wife Vanessa were pulling up at our house with medical bags in tow. Dr. Slishman performed an exam of my husbands finger and numbed it up, which gave him some relief quickly. He was able to pull a small piece of «something» out of the finger, all the while Vanessa was on her ipad taking notes and our information. He put a dressing on the finger and ordered some antibiotics for us pick up, just if we needed them (thankfully we didn’t). Our 7 year old happend to be home sick from school, so he checked her out too! Later in the day, my husband received a call from Dr. S, just checking in to make sure he was doing ok. A month later, the finger and our daughter are feeling much better and we never had to leave the comfort of our home. Dr. Slishman and Vanessa were both very professional, friendly and easy to talk to. I have recommended this service several times, and I have no doubt that we will call them up in the future for those things that come up in life that we don’t really need an ER, but still need thoughtful and knowledgable help for.
