History

Established in 1998.

In 1998, Matt Clark and Katie Franklin opened their tile design studio in San Luis Obispo, CA (featuring the Country Floors Collection). Recent central coast projects include: Mosque of Nasreen, Terry Hoage Vineyards, Villa Laguna Vista, Bowden Ranch Estates, as well as several fine homes in San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara, Monterey, Los Angeles, and Orange counties.

Business Owner

Matt Clark began working with tile and stone in Malibu, CA 1977. He apprenticed with Armand Agresti in NYC, beggining in 1982. In 1988, Matt worked in Portland, Oregon with Ann Sack’s at her original showroom. In the 1990’s Matt worked in NYC with David Garbo and Jed Johnson. Matts Work has appeared in many publications. In 2002, Matt Clark and Katie Franklin opened their tile design studio in San Luis Obispo, California

If I could rate zero stars I would. We are about to remodel both of our bathrooms and stopped in to get some ideas. The girl who greeted us was nice at first — until she asked for our name & email address. When we explained that we were just starting to get ideas for our project she told us that we would need to open an account before we could take any pictures (huh? I wasn’t planning to) or check out any samples. Fine. So we are looking around and find some cement tile that we had seen on a design show. I picked up the brochure that was there that showed all of the design styles and Matt comes over and informs me that the brochure belongs to them and that I wasn’t allowed to take it (did I say I was going to? Did I ask if I could have it? No.). A few minutes later he approaches us again and says «let me explain how this works. We provide concierge service — we don’t „just do orders“ we provide full service. This isn’t „Tile 1.0, it’s Tile 3.0“. He proceeds to say you can look around if you want, but I wanted you to understand…» At which point I tuned him out. We left immediately after he stopped talking. We get it — you DON’T want us in your «showroom» to look at the tile I assume you sell. Trust and believe — I would not use your tile or services if you were the ONLY tile source in town.
So we went literally around the corner to C.W. Quinn and not only did he not mind us looking around, he answered all of our questions, introduced us to a sales rep of one of the tile lines he carries, and was super friendly. We will buy our tile from him.

I’ve been to many tile and stone stores and I have to say that Matt’s years of experience in the tile business is unparalleled. I’ve been in tile for a long time and there wasn’t a trick question he couldn’t answer. I look forward to going there again.

You know when you are in the middle of a project, making tons of choices, spending money like mad, and being generally overwhelmed? It means the world when a company takes some of that burden away by stepping in and being a creative collaborator for the best result. That is this tile store! They helped by explaining things, making it fun, sharing their expertise, and generally helping us buy taking away the lonely crazy feeling that can creep in when doing house beautification projects. The tile installer comes today and wanted to make sure to give Team Matt Clark a shout out for all their kindness and care in getting us to this point!

Be warned — I purchased tile from this store a few years ago for an outdoor shower and was very pleased with the service and the selection and was very happy.
Recently I returned to place another order. My husband and I were treated so poorly I don’t understand how this place stays in business. We have lived here and done business here our entire lives. We prefer to keep our business local but will not be shopping here again. The owner is rude and dismissive. We were sent the wrong product even after we were assured it was in stock and paid an expedited shipping charge. The owner and the sales people changed their story of why it happened so many times it became comical. They essentially blamed us for not knowing what it was we ordered and told us we didn’t know what we were doing. When we showed them that the tile was different than on the sample board, we were told that the tile we wanted was out of stock so they ordered something else and they were sure they told us that. No. We are planning to donate the wrong tile that was sent to us and shop somewhere else. I recommend that you do too.

I went in on a reconnaissance mission as I am beginning a project and wanted ideas. I was abruptly dismissed by Matt (I think I have the name correct because the office assistant called him by name while I was there). He first asked if I was a customer but then proceeded to be rather short with me when he realized I wasn’t a big spending customer (yet) without even finding out what I wanted he asked if I was prepared to place an order today. I was dumbfounded by his arrogance, lack of respect, and uncaring attitude. I was prepared to place a small order, as it happens, however, not only will I not buy from this company but I will not go there again nor would I suggest to any of my friends or acquaintenances that they shop there. The horrible in-​store experience was not appreciated. Btw, I had been in before and had met with a woman who was pleasant and friendly but this experience today turned me off the Matt Clark Tile and Stone experience for life. Shop elsewhere — you have been warned!

I am remodeling a bathroom and decided to use Schluter-​Kerdi for the shower. It is the first time I have used this and Matt has been extremely helpful! He promptly returns calls and is eager to share his years of knowledge.
The Schluter-​Kerdi materials have been a huge labor saver. The materials are more expensive but that has easily been offset by the labor saved. I am looking forward to using them again!

Matt Clark Tile and Stone has the most solid selection of tile and stone in California!!! We drove all the way up from LA to visit this showroom after a friend of ours receommended their store. The folks who work there really know their tile and were able to suggest alternatives to looks I was curious about that wouldn’t work in my particular project. Fair and honest pricing too. Certainly worth the 3.5 hr drive up there! Thanks again MCT&S!!!

My husband and I chose Matt Clark to retile our 1931 bungalow bathroom several years ago. We wanted to retain the original Art Deco features of our house and Matt knew just what to do. He has extensive experience working on period houses in NYC and elsewhere and was the only dealer we could find who knew exactly what we wanted and where to get it. It was a no brainer then that when we were ready to move into the next phase of our home restoration that we would call on Matt even though we live in Lompoc. We have complete faith that we will be even more thrilled with our retiled kitchen and master bath as we were with the first work he did for us. I would not have trusted the work to anyone else!
