Mike Owens is an experienced, reliable, amiable and talented guitar teacher. Although Mike plays jazz and fingerstyle professionally, he began as a rock and metal player. Mike is happy to accept students interested in rock, metal, folk, jazz, classical or fingerstyle. Mike is formally trained in jazz guitar, classical guitar and music theory. Technique, music concepts and fretboard principles are taught and explored in music the student brings to the lesson. Mike is friendly, knowledgeable and supportive and he creates a positive atmosphere for kids and adults to learn, improve, rock out and even write their own music. Mike has guided over 400 guitar students to date, many of whom were students of several years. Mike teaches at Blue Note Music at 2556 Telegraph Avenue in Berkeley. History
Established in 1994.
I developed an interest in teaching while studying jazz with guitarist Dan Balmer. I began with a few students through friend recommendations. I adopted some of my teaching techniques from Dan. I also incorporated some methods from prior studies with internationally noted classical guitarist Scott Kritzer. While earning my bachelor’s degree I studied with Scott for 4 years before my 4 years with Dan. While working with Dan I enriched my music knowledge with a year of Music Theory I (voice) and a year of Music Theory II (piano). A short time later I moved to Santa Fe, NM and accepted a position as the main guitar teacher for Allegro Music, Inc. My teaching career flourished. My acquisition of students with a range of age and skill allowed me to develop and refine my own style. A central aspect of my lesson plan is the advancement of one’s technique and knowledge through studying and playing music chosen by the student. This approach also helps inspire the student to practice!

Mike is a highly skilled, knowledgeable and talented guitar player. Mike has performed in rock, metal, jazz, fusion, and classical ensembles. Mike currently plays fingerstyle and jazz professionally. He has recorded the album Mike Owens, an album of 10 original compositions. Currently he plays solo or with a vocalist in his group Mike Owens & Sarah Ross Duo.
Mike is happy to accept students interested in studying rock, metal, folk, jazz, classical or fingerstyle. Mike is experienced in the guitar instruction of beginning, intermediate and advanced players. Mike has guided over 400 different guitar students to date, and many of these individuals were students for several years. Mike prefers that his students choose and bring their own music to their lessons. Technique, music principles and fretboard knowledge are taught and explored as they are encountered in music the student enjoys.
