Posada De San Juan

On a late friday night, after calling over 20 four star hotels that where full, we where forced to settle with this three start hotel. And what a delight it was! We where meet by the owner who was sweat and funny. She told stories about her husband building this hotel. She personally showed us and around and took care of us. The hotel was quite and the room was dark, we had a great night of sleep. Also cause the bed was comfy. The hotel has character, charming to us, but some could call it out dated or even a little run down. But after staying in hotel chains in little small town, this was a welcomed find. I would defiantly go back just to stay here!

This is a lovely hotel, particularly when decorated for the holiday season. This is an old building, so do not expect some of the modern conveniences of new hotels. The staff were very kind, my mother had frequent requests and they were great with accommodating her. I would stay again.

Make that –1 star… What a nightmare. My friend and I were in town for one night for a class. Wanted to get a good nights sleep before the class so we stayed overnight at Posada «Bates Motel» De San Juan. Checked in at 2:00 only to be told that our room wouldn’t be ready until 4:00. We were the only room rented for the night. How hard is it to get one room ready… We came back at 3:30 and still no room… Rude, angry people own this place and have not interest in customer service or any service of any kind… Finally got in and what a mess. Smelly, and old. Fireplace didn’t work, missing handles in the bath, carpet was filthy… and Oh Yes… old popcorn under the phone. The night was pretty scary since we knew were alone. Just us and the «NIGHT WATCHMAN»…Here’s Johnny… Television was missing channels. Really, couldn’t get CBS. Morning finally comes and we’re told there will be no breakfast. The coffee pot we were given in our room doesn’t work and then there was the unusable, undrinkable, unpotable water.
When we got to our class, the owners told us more horror stories about this place and we can actually say we were glad to come out alive…
We toured the new place across the freeway on our way out of town. If we return to San Juan Bautista and need to stay the night… it will not be at Posada for sure.

Stayed there this weekend for a wedding. Let’s start with the pros. Great location for the town and very close to the Mission and all the town’s history. Is a quaint little place, very small and thin walls, but that’s to be expected of a historical hotel.
I would have enjoyed my stay if the owner wasn’t so mean. I would have rather had Jack Nicholson in The Shining as the innkeeper over her. She was rude from check in. And don’t even think about checking in before 4PM or she’ll flip!
The bridal suite is on the second floor, has on adjacent room and no rooms below. The day of my friend’s wedding she accused her of being too loud, forcing the occupants in the adjacent room to check out. She also said they were stomping all night. For starters, she came back to the room and went right to sleep. Additionally, there’s nobody below to «stomp» on.
NONE of the room’s fireplaces worked. She shuts the gas off to save money. Most of us had over flowing toilet issues, even in the bridal suite. There’s two shower heads in the giant tubs, but it would have been nice if one wasn’t freezing and the other scolding hot. The sheets were so rough they actually scraped part of my little toe.
Would I stay there again? No! Did it make for some funny wedding memories? Sure, but way too pricey for the below par hospitality. Step up your game owners, stop treating guests like they’re uninvited pains in your necks!

We stayed there for two nights. When arrived on a cold, foggy afternoon my wife wanted to light the fireplace and could not, we were told the owner shuts the gas off early in June to save gas. The fireplace was one of the major reasons my wife chose this place.
When we asked to camcel the second night the desk woman told us they have a 48 hour cancellation policy. Not flexible at all.
Our toilet would not quit running, we had very low water pressure, the TV was a old CRT set that on got one channel. There was a missing cover on the outlet in the bathroom and the only lamp on the desk was broken with the bulb hanging out of the lamp.
This place is falling apart and the owner doesn’t appear to care.

We recenlty stayed their in December 2011 for the wonderful Christmas show at El Theatro Camposino. Price was reasonable for a lovely room with a gas fireplace,
Very close walk to the mission and right down town near many restaurants, make it a nice place to stay at. Front desk help was very attentive, and morning muffins and coffee was appreciated.
Suggestions. While the lobby was beautifully decorated for the holidays, the exterior could have used a few strings of light and that would have completed the charm.
Some exterior lights werent working — hence it made walking difficult in the dark of the moonless evening. Coffee really needed some help — might i suggest 8 Oclock, which is sold at Walmart/​Target and highly rated with Consumer report and Cooks Magazine — Reasonably priced i might add.
We’ll be back — and wish them success, as i can imagine running a profitable hotel in that area is a very difficult endeavor.

This place is by far the worst hotel I’ve stayed in. Every year I go with my family to see the play at the mission and every year we stay here. In the last few years it has really gone downhill.
For starters, they charged us an extra $ 20 per kid but neglected to give us the extra towels and extra cups. The wifi connected only in the lobby and didn’t even show up in the rooms. The gas fireplaces have not worked in years. There was mold on the pillowcases and comforters. The overall cleanliness of the hotel is downright awful.
The lady working the front desk at the hotel seemed nice at first, but when we asked her to fix the toilet (which stopped working after a normal amount of toilet paper was used) she accused us of being in the wrong and was practically yelling at us for using too much toilet paper. When she finished, we said thank you but she ignored us and slammed the door instead. In fact, when we went downstairs to get her (the phone wasn’t working so we couldn’t call) she offered us a plunger and seemed annoyed when we didn’t want to do it ourselves.
The continental breakfast barely qualifies at that. There were two types of bread, some old fruit, and a few very stale pastries. And if you want coffee, you’re going to have to go downstairs for it because there are no coffee makers in the room, or hair dryers for that matter. But thank god they have an iron.
If you want to stay at a hotel that isn’t dirty and unfriendly, you’re better off staying somewhere in Gilroy.

INCOMPETENCE. Called months ahead to hold a room for a friend’s wedding. The couple had already reserved 10 rooms under their name. I made myself crystal clear that I was there for their wedding, that I was thus holding a room under a reservation that already existed. They confirmed my reservation and said that it would be put under their existing reservation for the rooms.
Apparently they decided that I wanted a completely separate reservation, not for any wedding, for a room under my own name, and for nights not even remotely close to the dates I specified. How they could mess up this poorly is beyond my comprehension. They had called on the day I had supposedly booked (again, no I didn’t) and left me a message. I wasn’t expecting a call from anyone, let alone from a hotel asking why I hadn’t shown up for a reservation I didn’t make. When I eventually called, they said that they were completely booked up and couldn’t do anything to help me.
No apology from them, by the way. To top it off, they took the time to make me feel like it was my fault! They said had I picked up the phone to fix their problem that I wasn’t aware of sooner, they might have been able to help me. So your inability to do your job correctly and take a reservation is now my fault? Pathetic and infuriating. Do yourself a favor and stay away from this hotel. Unless you’d like to make a reservation for Christmas on the Fourth of July, in which case this hotel is highly recommended.

This was the worst hotel I had ever been to. Please, to the Owners… Please read all the reviews on here and CHANGE!!! This place needs a lot of work in the rooms, and the price is way to much for the rooms. The rooms need updating really bad. We had an old orange rotted up under our bed, and when we checked out and told the owners, they said, «oh Im sorry.» and that was it. Customer service needs help too. When we checked in the lady seemed genuine, but shared a little too much of her personal struggles, and seemed stressed and tired from a whole day of working at the hotel, with no relief. I hate that this hotel charges per person. that is crazy! I will never recommend this place, ever, until I see a change. The carpets in the room were nasty, nothing worked, not even the tub i was looking forward to. The continental breakfast is sick… its a joke. believe the bad reviews on here… its true. its sad because this place has true potential.

We stayed here on a Sunday night as walk-​ins.
The woman at the reception was so nice and helpful. The rate was great $ 100 + taxes, we had a lovely room with fireplace — we just had to ask for the pilot to be lit which happened immediately, and we had a jacuzzi tub for 2! She gave us a ‘run-​down’ on the restaurants open just up the block from which we chose the local Mexican place. The restaurant was busy but with great food and friendly service.
The place is clean, the people nice, decent breakfast foods in the morning — don’t know what the problem is with these other people, but our experience was way above average — and we are travelers of both the road and resorts.
We will stay there again without question.

We are not those people who are never happy when they travel and pick apart everything. We ended up staying in San Juan Bautista when the hotel we were originally suppose to stay had major plumbing problems; Must have been a county wide problem because this motel’s water pressure and hot water were very spotty.
We had been in this hotel when they first opened and were very impressed by it. Sadly, that is not now the case. I don’t think they have done anything in the way of maintenance or even deep cleaning.
If I had been traveling by myself, it would have been a no brainier to not stay here. The place is dark and really creepy. The song, «Hotel California», kept playing in my brain!
The wall paper and the carpeting were really dared and grimy. The gas fire place was not operable. There was a heater under the tv that ran most of the nigh. But I don’t complain about that noise, after living in places where there was no thermostat or heated by wood. Consequently, the sound of a heater is music to my ears.
The most offensive part of the room was the bathroom. Hubby took a shower and said that the shower head was almost all clogged up. I went in to take a bath but decided to pass when I saw the general griminess and the hair hanging out of all of the nozzles.
The beds I am sure that they were the original ones when the motel was built. The sheets and blankets were clean but that is about all I can say about them. They could have been very easily been in some «no tell, no motel.»
We walked to the bakery for a great breakfast the next morning. That was the highlight of our stay. Fresh brewed coffee and pastries still warm from the oven!
One last warning, San Juan is like an old Mexican village. Bring your own bottled water. Nothing is open on Mondays. There is no town police force.
This motel could be a true hidden gem of a motel. We have stayed at similar ones many times that were wonderful. It would not cost all that much to clean and refurbish the rooms. It appears that the owners are just burnt out. We paid $ 100 for a room so they aren’t that burnt out!

I adore this quaint hotel in the charming village of San Juan Bautista. It is a perfect find and a great little getaway from the SF Bay which we found by chance. And walking distance to the world renowned el Teatro Campesino! The only thing negative is the low lights, but that makes it more romantic and goes with the mission aesthetic! It’s not corporate sterile, but family run, with love and care!
I do not understand the low ratings? I have stayed in all sorts of hotels, hostels, motels, b and b’s around the world and this place was magical. Much of the magic comes from the artistic eyes of Mary, the owner, and the spirit present of her beloved husband whose legacy lives on in the aesthetic and aura of this happy little hotel.
The architecture is traditional Colonial ala Mexicana. It is reminiscent of high end places I have stayed in Oaxaca City, Colima, Puebla, and other cities in Mexico. There is genuine personal touch, beauty, and hospitality that seems to be hard to find in America these days. Oh, and that woman who said to stay at the Gilroy Hilton, that is truly absurd! I guess if your that bland, please drive on by the San Juan Bautista exit on go to your local Target or Maceys outlet for a good time! It sounds like you don’t belong in a cultured and historical place such as San Juan Bautista!

Can’t complain! Had an excellent time and enjoyed the location. Everything is very organized and clean.

I’m glad I had a far different experience than those reviewed before here and trip advisor. The owner was kind as was the rest of staff. The room was very clean and quiet. A good value for the price and little choice when staying in SJB. Thankfully I was pleasantly surprised. Stayed with a wedding party and all in our group were satisfied.

Stayed for three nights over Christmas.
Plusses: Charming hotel; extremely quiet (except for the roosters, but use of the fan creates suitable white noise, if needed); accommodating and friendly staff; reasonable rates; double shower and jacuzzi tub for two; clean.
Minuses: Mattress was not comfortable for us the first night, but our room was quickly changed and the next two nights were fine. (We’re spoiled with a Tempurpedic bed at home).
What matters in a modest-​priced hotel is peace and quiet, clean, suitable room and bath, and good service. We got this. One doesn’t go to a small hotel in San Juan Bautista to watch movies on a big screen tv in their hotel room, or to get a buffet for breakfast, or even to expect a luxurious mattress (for that price). This small, family-​owned place is worth a stay.

I live about 30 miles from San Juan Bautista. I am a school teacher and like reading the reviews of places. The negatives and positives about this place made me want to see for myself. I booked a night and my partner and I went down. The place is clean and comfortable with a Spanish colonial charm. Some rooms with views and balconies are better than others, in that regard, but the spa tubs are roomy and the beds are comfortable. I found the facilities are more than adequate. I chatted with folks who come and stay regularly and they too like the place. I am very well traveled and have stayed at some of the best/​worst places imaginable. This place is just fine and most travelers will not be disappointed. There are not the little extras some people demand such as newspapers on the doorstep, internet in the rooms, etc. but this location is not likely to attract many business travelers anyway. The wifi in the lobby works great and I sat and visited while doing my computer work in the evening and early morning. There was coffee and fresh pastry for breakfast and I had no trouble checking in early. There are some delightful places to eat in town and I recommend Les Jardines. Give this place a try and go for the upstairs room with even numbers, you will not be disappointed!

Stayed here last night so I could be closer to Monterey for an early morning whale watching trip. I’ve been here a few times before, so I knew what to expect. I have to admit, the place is a little run down, but I like the charm of San Juan Bautista with the old mission and streets that you can imagine the clip-​clop of horses hooves as they drew carriages in the olden days. Posado fits right in with the old-​world feel of the town. Old, fully of history, quaint, and a blissfully quiet get away. This place is a good deal price-​wise, and you can’t beat the dual headed whirlpool tub/​shower combo. Yes, there is no internet, but some of us who need to «unplug» appreciate that very fact.
It’s been a little hit or miss at this place. One time our tub didn’t work at all (and it was the one thing we were really looking forward to) and we didn’t find out until the next morning of our one-​night stay. On that occasion the staff was not helpful and our attempts to negotiate a late check out (which they normally charge extra for) resulted in only one extra hour and a lot of frustration. However, this time the staff was lovely and accommodating. We checked in only to find out that we had a roomful of rambunctious kids next door to us. We inquired at the front desk about another room and were promptly moved to a more desirable location that was totally quiet and just what we needed.
They have added a continental breakfast, which they didn’t have the last time we stayed, and that has a variety of breads and mini croissants as well as jam and fruits.
All in all I like this place and will go again. I was extremely impressed by the gracious response to our request to change rooms, and I always find my visits to this area to be very relaxing and restorative. Thanks Posada staff, just what the doctor ordered!

Fabulous! We opted for a non-​view room, which turned out to be a view of the tin roofs next door from the balcony. A bonus for us cause the view rooms overlooked the parking lot and on New Year’s Eve, we thought it might get noisy. The lowest price room had a king bed, (no plastic on the mattress nor was it squeaky, thank you) in a large room. A gas fireplace added ambiance along with the reproduction antique oak furniture. We had bedside lamps which worked fine for reading. The whirl-​pool tub for two looked inviting but waaaay too much water. The water heated up immediately for the shower and was plenty warm, a big plus in my book. Also note that the rooms were very sound proof, we didn’t hear our neighbors at all. The room was clean, was a true non smoking room.
We enjoyed the little town, took a nap before heading out for dinner and a pub crawl ;) 3 bars, 3 bands, no cover. It was great! The morning breakfast buffet included mini bagels, cream cheese and jam, fresh fruit sliced, blueberry muffins, wheat or white toast, tea and coffee and there was plenty when I went down at 8:30 in my jammies but be warned they clean it all up at 9am.
We watched the Rose Bowl Parade the next morning on the little tv and nobody quibbled when we were a little late checking out.
Needs Improvement: INTERNET ACCESS PLEASE! They were supposed to have it in the lobby but I logged on with the password I couldn’t get out. Also, the tv had poor reception for cable. We ended up parking outside of Daisy’s for a few minutes before the bikers showed up for their annual New Year’s Day run.
Sell bottled water in the lobby. We walked down to the store and bought bottled water and I’m sooo glad we did.
I would definitely stay here again, if they get internet. We come down for business fairly regularly. This is a good value for the price and I really like this little town.

Best bet in town which still does not make it good enough.
The good: price, central location (hard to screw that up in a town of 1,700 people), large tub with 2 shower heads.
the other:
super-​squeaky beds
plastic mats underneath the mattress pads — protectin’ the matress, makin’ you feel icky
no internet connections of any kind, even paid ones
motion-​sensor lights which means if you’re reading in bed, you need to get up and activate them every 20 minutes
toast and jam breakfast is exactly how it sounds. You might get half a banana if you’re lucky
But you really don’t have much choice if you need to be in town, so just brace yourself :-)

I can’t swear that I won’t stay here again. But the chances of me having to stay in San Juan Bautista again isn’t huge so maybe I can make that promise.
Keep in mind that my Posada de San Juan experience lasted less than 12 hours (late night wedding party, early departure). My stay here was perfectly fine, just a few details that made the stay a, let’s say, quirky experience. Let’s be brief…
— dizzy floral room wallpaper
— huge jacuzzi tub that we decided was «clean»: was great
— bed with springs that wanted so badly to pierce my back (good thing I had too much to drink)
— window view of a dilapidated home
— «murder scene» feeling (per the boy)
— lots of free parking!

— milky water
That’s it for ol’ Posada de San Juan. I wouldn’t advise NOT staying there but if you’re going to be close enough to the Gilroy area, you may wanna opt for the Gilroy Hilton.
