Whipp’s Frozen Fruits & Desserts

Wonderful gelato! I went last week and the guy behind the counter said they’ve changed owners and now they will be serving crepes… we will see how good they are!
we got: crème brûlée, dark chocolate, and cherry rum (or something like that?)
I loved my combination of crème brûlée with the chocolate… it was an awesome treat after rock climbing :)

CLOSED, yup, out of business just as I predicted BUT it appears Café Bonne Terre has taken it’s place. They still serve gelato, frozen yogurt and whipps (frozen fruit combos) but now they also have crepes. You can get sweet or savory crepes, gluten-​free, regular, or buckwheat. Will have to review soon.

Maybe I ordered the wrong thing?
I didn’t see any offerings for frozen fruits, and I was in the mood for ice cream anyway.
That was the weirdest, most offputting «gelato» I’ve ever encountered, and I make a habit of searching out ice cream from all over the world. I’ve never had anything that resembled dondurma (stretchy Turkish orchid ice cream) so much. I’m not entirely certain how one gets ice cream to behave that way unless it’s full of stabilizers, or old, or both.

I recently bought a Living Social Deal here and wasted my money. I often go with the three strikes you’re out rule, and I’ve come three times to try and they were closed each time.
I just wanted a frozen treat and I wish I could get my money back.
I tried calling them and e-​mailing them and paid an extra fourth visit during their posted hours to no avail.
One star for almost getting their name spelled right.

hmm, should have read the reviews before attempting to check this place out, b/​c i’m not the only one who keeps seeing «lights out» when i stop by.
each time i stopped by this week, they were closed! the posted hours say they open @ 10.30am everyday, monday — sunday. i generally stopped by sometime between 10.30−12, and they were never open! i even tried calling them, but there was no answer, nor voicemail. unfortunately, they don’t list their hours on their website or post them on their front door/​storefront, so the only way i knew their listed hours was thru Unilocal (maybe they forgot to update their hours on Unilocal)?
incidentally, while i was checking out the exterior of the store today, a frequent customer walked over and told me that their hours have been very sporadic as of late. he said one day they were closed til the middle of the afternoon, opened for an hour, then shut down again.
i really want to try their product, but i can’t unless they open their doors!
what kind of business are they expecting to generate if they are almost always closed???

I made my stop here right after grocery shopping over at Safeway. I needed a place to sit down, I needed a place to charge my phone, and what the heck, I wanted to cross this off of my bookmarks so there I was about to order the 2 scoops affogato-​style but they do not have espresso *sad* I’m not sure if they ran out of espresso, simply don’t have espresso that day, or they no longer carry espresso but I was bummed.
I then proceeded and ordered the small: dark chocolate and coppa something (I did not like it) but I must admit that the gelato was smooth, not sweet at all. I inhaled my cup and was there for almost an hour reading the latest Cinequest news.
If you are there and craving for gelato, this place can easily satisfy but to me the selections were very limited and I was put off by the nonexistent thing that was on the menu.

Clean.
Has a restroom that is also nice and clean.
Gelato Classico gelato, but with a wedge of waffle cone which other places don’t have. Good selection of gelato.
Efficient service.
I’ll be back next summer to try the other options.

I had the tropical whipped fruit, and it came out very creamy and tasty. The only downside was that the taste wasn’t really tropical, but more like pear.
The gelato looks pretty legit, though, and I would definitely come back to grab a cup of nostalgia. Colors of the flavors are dull, as they should be, as indicators of fresh ingredients, so the only thing holding me back from coming here as much is that it’s in a shady area, and the lighting’s not that great.

I read somewhere that gelato was simply «high quality ice cream».
After having some at this place, I couldn’t agree more.
For $ 3.95, you can get up to 3 different flavors of gelato, topped with a small wafer. I got vanilla bean, cookies n cream, and crème brûlée. The gelato was so thick, creamy, and cold, and from the moment I put the crème brûlée in my mouth, I knew why it was of higher quality than your average ice cream. I can never eat regular ice cream or even froyo the same way ever again.
If I’m ever in downtown SJ again, I’ll be coming back here!

Sometimes when life throws you doodooschnitzel, you just gotta pretend it’s dark chocolate gelato and scarf it down.
I barged into the shop with tears streaming down my face. My cheeks streaked with lines of my black eye makeup. Snot hanging down my nose. My legs were cold from wearing this short skirt on this freezing May day and my feet were killing me from my upset-​walk in these four-​inch heels.
I just wanted to scream. FOR ICE CREAM. This is your small? That ain’t gonna fix my problems. I will use two of my five free gelato coupon in exchange for a medium with three choices of flavors.
And of course they all looked like doodooschnitzels: double espresso beans, dark chocolate, and this Italian cookies-​n-​cream which I was too distraught at the time to pronounce or remember the name of.
They were gooey, cold and sticky, with a triangular airy, flaky, crispy, and frankly quite pale wafer stuck in the middle of my medium-​is-​clearly-​not-​enough gelato. The wafer was so delicate that it crumbled upon contact, exploding into a million tiny pieces before landing safely on my face, hair and dress when I exited the store. Was I stupid to try to scoop the stupid gelato with that stupid, lightly sweetened and oh-​so-​delicious-​gimme-​gimme-​more wafer? Oh and this gets better: before the wafer-​explosion, it was dipped in my gooey doodoomix before finding sanctuary on my face hair dress. Was that bum in downtown looking at me funny? Sir, this is DARK CHOCOLATE on the tip of my nose. NOT POOP. And of course I didn’t realize that I got this something-​something on my face until 30 minutes later when I looked in a mirror.
Fudge. Me. Literally.
But having this much-​needed gelato for lunch was euphoria-​inducing. Therapy ain’t cheap, and self-​administered medication must suffice for now. It gave me the power and strength to fight injustice and strive for world peace.
My only complaint though, is that clearly, sir behind the counter, I was emotionally unstable at the time. A walking misery. The least you could have done for me is giving me an extra scoop, or top it off a bit so it’s not flat on the top of my medium cup of gelato. Come on.

One of the employees who was attending to our large group had no hesitations to give us samples. He gave us so many samples that we had already gotten out fix!
Groupon deal was awesome, so I couldn’t pass it up. Glad I bought it!
Mmm, I could go for some gelatto now.

Frozen fruit cups with no sugar or cream is amazing! I wish I had a machine like that in my house. It’s guilt free healthy dessert without the compromise in taste.
I tried the pear fruit cup and the tropical fruit cup. Both were pretty tasty and gave me major brain freezes. I’d recommend trying it out.

This place is located right next to San Jose State… they ran out of the tarts here so I decided to try the Frozen Fruits… no sugar added, no fat…

They guy that helped me was very patient and helpful… I wanted to try it to see if I would like it… I tried the banana whipps and the pineapple whipps… the banana whipp was nice and fluffy tasting… the pineapple was too sourly for my taste buds…
After a little time of thinking… ended up getting the tropical mix (mango, papaya, pineapple) which was just the right blend of fruits… got a mini one for $ 2.10…eating it I felt so healthy hahaha…100% fruit!

this place is awesome. i dont see how this concept that Whipps created is not popular enough. I think it may be the location of DTSJ, which isn’t that great in my honest opinion. I thit ink Whipps would be pretty popular in any upscale westfield mall, but i understand rent can be expensive!
anyways, had the banana Whipps and it was amazing. it tasted just like real bananas … because it is real bananas of course.
they also have gelato here, which is pretty fresh. i cant wait to come back next time, especially when the weather permits

Tired of smoothies? Plain-​o-​icecreams? Exhausted from running around in downtown San Jose? Relax. Have some gelato, frozen fruit or frozen yogurt and dream of some far-​away place.
You can get gelato classico here. But my favorite is the frozen fruit. There’s peach, banana and pear. Today, I kicked back and pretended it wasn’t raining in San Jose and I was somewhere where there’s miles of white sandy beach – say Playa Ropa, near Zihuatanejo, Mexico – eating my frozen fruit tropical of mango and pina with Conchitta. Wake up! You still have to drive home!
OK, it’s still a good place to have a snack.

My friend and I randomly walked by and felt like dessert.
The owner is SUPER super nice and we talked for a while about this business and how he makes the frozen. And he didn’t mind at all when we tried like six different samples (all on his insistent offering) and then said we might come back after dinner. we didn’t make it back in time =(.
The whipped frozen fruit is AMAZING! It tastes JUST like ice cream. but is literally just frozen fruit. We were trying to figure out how the machine works. he literally just sticks frozen fruit in and in a couple seconds it make the whipped stuff. He told us had designed it himself to perfect the process, but told us we could just freeze fruit and use a Cuisinart or a Bullet, anything with big enough blades, and just keeping blending and blending until it gets chopped up and then basically whips.
The whipped frozen fruit we tried:
Pineapple, Banana, Tropical (pineapple, mango, and one more)
ALL were delicious. Seriously. just like ice cream, slightly less rich, but not super light like a sorbet. The tropical did have a tiny tiny bit of a bitter aftertaste, like that small bit you get from too much mango sometimes.
The only reason they don’t get 5 stars is because the gelato sucked. He apologized that it was a little soft today. not only that, but I tried the green tea and the flavor was so artificial and overly sweetened that I could barely stand it.

I finally tried it and loved it!
The old Café Yolicious is now Whipp’s! I saw the banner a week and a half ago while visiting some friends near San Jose State University. They weren’t gamed to try it so I went back last weekend.
The store still serves four varieties of fro-​yo plus sorbets and gelatos from Gelato Classico, but it was the namesake Whipps that I wanted to try. The Whipps are frozen fruit whipped to a soft consistency just like fro-​yo but with no additives, not even sugar. There are four sizes to choose from. On my visit the available flavors were Pear, Banana, Tropical Mix, Pineapple, Watermelon and Peach. I asked the man behind the counter how many flavors I could combine into a medium sized cup, and he told me two.
I chose the watermelon and peach (
). It takes a bit of a wait for all your frozen fruits to be ground up and whipped, but the tasty treat is worth it. The particular watermelon that was used was not very sweet so the watermelon was a bit bland. I think my best bet next time will be to go with a fruit that is always flavorful regardless of being sweet or sour. Peach was an excellent choice. I’ll probably try the pineapple next week.
They offer a frequent user card where ten punches gets you a free small dessert. With the hockey season coming up I should finish off a card in no time. The shop offers free wi-​fi too.
Check it out. It’s different. It’s cold. It’s healthy. It’s good!

First time to Whipp’s. It’s in the former Café Yolicious on San Fernando between Third & Fourth near the MLK Jr Library.
It’s Good & tasty healthy — all fruit (nothing else added), mixed in the «whip» machine. I asked how many I could sample of the Whipps owner said 2. I tried Peach & Watermelon. I liked them both. Other flavors: pear, banana, pineapple.
Then I asked for a mini of Tropical Mix — (Mango, Papaya, Pineapple) for $ 2.20. I paid CASH. Mini $ 2.20; S $ 2.95; M $ 3.95; L $ 4.95
He does have a Frequent Buyers Card — it’s his Business card & the bottom it says buy 10 get 1 FREE Small.
He also sells Gelato Classico & Frozen Yogurt.
He said he’s open every day or something like that, time open can be around 11−12noon and close anytime he wants. mainly around 9:30pm-whenever, weekends could be later.
He’s created something unique & very cool. Let’s hope he stays in business Forever!
