Whimsical Frozen Yogurt Gelato

Downgrading to a 3 star ”a-​ok”, I wonder if I was on something when I rated this place 4.5 stars because most recent visits have left me less than impressed.
Gelato sizes are huge and which is great for my Husband who loves the stuff but the Frozen Yogurt? Eh. really not so great. They do now have Mochi which is nice but honestly would prefer go elsewhere for Yogurt now.

Contrary to a previous review, this place does take credit card.
Standard froyo place that also offers gelato. Berry and green tea gelato was good. Service was nice.

Its hot and sticky inside and the service was awkward, but the red velvet cake ice cream is just too good. It’s literally what it sounds like.
Also, check in on Unilocal and get a small cone for 2 bucks. On nom nom

My favorite thing about this place is not only do they have really great frozen yogurt but they also have gelato! There aren’t too many places that are like that.
Compared to other frozen yogurt places, it is a little bit cheaper. They also do have a lot more toppings than most places. Overall this is an awesome places to come with friends and just relax.
The only to keep in mind is parking, especially if you’re going on a weekend night. It does get pretty packed but it’s definitely worth it.

I used to come here all the time because it was the closest frozen yogurt business around me.
Tonight, I decided to stop by because I’ve been absolutely craving the red velvet cheesecake ice cream. I walked in with my boyfriend and the first words I was greeted with were «it’s cash only» rather than «Welcome to whimsical! Just to let you guys know we’re only accepting cash due to software updates on our credit card system.» I knew about their whole cash only deal already since I’ve read other reviews beforehand. But anyways, yes it’s a mouthful to say but it’s a way nicer way to greet customers.
A man behind the counter ended up helping me as I was ordering my gelato. I found it very rude of him to hold his hand to his ear and say «what I can’t hear you!» Like really… I was speaking loud and clear already. It would have been nice to receive a nice response than the one he gave me. He looked very annoyed and irritated, well at least until one of his friends came in to say hi.
The girl behind the register didn’t even greet me as I paid. She just looked at what I had and told me my total.
One star just because I absolutely love their red velvet cheesecake gelato. That’s the only time you’ll find me purchasing any dessert from there.

The Green Tea gelato was good… a little over creamy but not bad.
They do need to get a credit card payment method though… let’s be serious.

The day me and my kids came in here, it was HOT! So I wanted to cool the kids down with some yogurt. My daughter decided she wanted cookies n cream gelato instead. It was pretty good. Not sure if it was for that day only but I was told cash only. Sooo… I didn’t have enough cash for my son so we went to jamba juice instead. There is some seating inside too if you wanted to eat your yummy sweets inside.

–1 for CASH ONLY, which only got implemented last week. We’re at the Plant, WHY ARE YOU CASH ONLY NOW. This isn’t a hole in the wall Asian place.
–1 for melty froyo, I seriously got two different cups of half frozen yogurt.
–1 the two girls at the toppings counter who just stared at me for interrupting their loudass conversation and didn’t bother to answer my question.
–1 for the guy at the register who was SO RUDE when I asked them about when they stopped taking card. and then had the nerve to push the tip jar closer to me right before he gave me my change.
A few weeks ago, I would have gave them a solid 4 stars. They deserve the one star instead of zero, just because I can’t find durian gelato anywhere else.

During a hot summer’s night, there was an intense craving for ice cream that needed to be satisfied. Seeing that this place had a great check-​in offer (2 $ for single scoop of gelato) I decided to go.
I was greeted by a young lady who was very polite in her manners and asked if we liked to sample some flavors. They offered really unusual flavors such as: Pandan Coconut, Nutella, and Churro. I went with the Strawberry Cheesecake cone.
My single scoop gelato was more than enough to make me happy. As I went in for the first lick and tasted the cream… mhmmm yummy… for a moment I was able to escape the hot summer weather. I quickly devoured the ice cream after that.
Would definitely come back again! Great quick service, clean area, and bunch more tasty flavors to try.
P.S: The have stamp cards for a free one after 10 purchases!

They have such a unique variety of flavors! My favorite gelato flavors are:
~ Durian
~ Ube
~ Avocado
~ Red Velvet Cheesecake
I’ve sampled many others and liked them all just fine. There were times when some of the consistencies were kind of icy, but that usually isn’t the case. Their waffle cones are nothing special; in fact they’re actually kind of stale, so I recommend just going with the cup.
Must try:
~ Pandan
~ Pineapple sorbet
~ Tiramisu
~ Butter Pecan

I tried the yogurt here and it was really good! There are lots of flavors and is a perfect place to bring your kids and friends on a sunny day. They have lots of toppings that you can choose from. The price for each ounce is reasonable and there’s also outdoor seating! Go here for dessert after you finish eating at those restaurants around The Plant!

Durian gelato! Ube! Avocado! Pandan! This is an Asian person’s gelato dream! No more are you bored with vanilla, chocolate, and strawberry! I’ve decided that whenever I’m in the area and will go home right away, I must pick up a quart. I can’t not. It’s amazing to take home and to eat! I love the flavors and I love that they have durian. Durian is one of my favorite fruits, if not the most favorite of them all, and to be able to find it in a gelato form is great. The texture is nice and smooth and it tastes like durian. The other flavors are great too! Today, I went home with a quart of ube and durian combined. It was delicious. I ate just a scoop so I can save the rest!
Perhaps Whimsical can open up in another location closer to me? Yes please!

This review is taking into account my most recent visit /​gelato attempt. I have to say that it was truly the strangest gelato I’ve ever had. Watery and flavorless are the best ways to describe it. This applied to both the green tea and the cookie dough «flavors» that our group tried. They didn’t taste offensive, but I was personally offended on behalf of all the other excellent gelato out there that are smooth, slightly creamy, and full of rich flavor.
Our visit was disappointing; it just made us crave the real thing, but too bad we’d already consumed all those wasted calories. Sad. Face.
On the plus side, the froyo is decent with ample toppings and sauces. The extra stars, though, are for the awesome friendly service.
TIP: Try the gelato at your own risk! The froyo will probably be better, but the only way to find out is to give it a whirl (pun intended!).

came here on a whim for dessert and was satisfied. They serve gelato and froyo. I walked through the froyo wall and didn’t see any flavors that I wanted to try so I went with gelato. The mister got cookies and cream while I went for the cappuccino crunch. Both smalls were a heaping amount! I could have easily shared one small. The cashier was a really sweet gentleman who helped us make our decision on a flavor.
The ice cream was A-​OK but nothing I would try again for. Service was good and is worth it if you are looking to try something new. 2 small gelatos came out to be $ 7

Our group decided to come here after Boiling Crab since it’s right next door for dessert. It didn’t disappoint (:
They have a frozen yogurt and gelato: D I chose to get gelato and they had a good amount of flavors. There was green tea, pandan, durian, mango, cookies and cream, taro, and so on… They were pretty patient with giving out samples so I got to try a couple before I finally chose a flavor. I decided to go with the green tea and it had a nice light sweet taste and it was smooth. Single scoop on a cone is $ 1.95 which isn’t bad! I didn’t get to try their froyo but from what my friends said, it was good too! I saw that the topping selection was pretty big.
So if you’re ever feeling whimsical, try this place!

I’ve had a little bit of a hit and miss situation with Whimsical. When they’re good its amazing, but I’ve also had some pretty epic fails as well. I think its interesting that two of my most favorite desserts (Red Velvet cake and Tiramisu) I found to be absolutely disgusting flavors for their gelato. But on the other hand, I’m kind of obsessed with their Chocolate Hazelnut.
They’re always nice about giving samples (really I just want to know what I’m getting myself into, I’m not trying to get away with free bites).
I’d love to place a catering order with them for my office, but as I mentioned in my tip, they don’t accept my corporate credit card. Sorry American Express users, you’re out of luck here.
I’d say you definitely get your money’s worth though. I’ve always received generous portions for their price.
To sum it up, they still get a thumbs up from me. I just wouldn’t bother to go out of my way to stop in.

The frozen yogurt was quite good especially the boysenberry flavor and I’d come back just for that. Despite the many good reviews for their gelato, I couldn’t find myself liking its texture. It just wasn’t creamy enough for me. There were icy bits, almost like freezer burn. The taste of cookie dough was pretty good but the pandan flavor was a little off. Loved the mango poppers. That was an excellent addition to the yogurt.

My friends and I ran here after running The Rave Run in San Jose at the Santa Clara Fairgrounds because we scream for ice cream! But I guess in this case it was for gelato. They have a good amount of gelato and frozen yogurt favors. I didn’t even bother checking out the froyo located in the back of the store because I was fixated on their durian gelato in the front of the store. My friend thought about 5 seconds before ordering a cone of their durian ice cream. I was hesitant, but once I tried his ice cream cone, I knew I needed my own. (should be noted: we are both durian lovers) I bought one myself as well (technically he bought mine since I left my wallet in the car, owe ya $ 1.95!) That’s right, it was $ 1.95 exactly for a cone of delicious gelato! It’s rare to find a place that sells durian ice cream/​gelato, thinking about it makes me want to go back to get some.
Anyways, my friends that I went with got two scoops of different favors and toppings in a big cup shared with their significant other for $ 5. They enjoyed their gelato as well!
They have outside seating (perfect for a hot summer night) and indoor seating with TV.
I will definitely come back to get durian ice cream and other favors when I get a chance! This place is located in a plaza with different restaurants and stores, so it’s perfect a small dessert break!

I am here for the gelato! :) I don’t know why, but whenever I am here, I check out the frozen yogurt, but they never have the taste I’m craving for. I know it’s selective and changes whenever a flavor runs out… but where’s the orange or citrus-​y flavors I crave?! :sad face:
The gelato– I totally recommend the red velvet! Actual chunks of red velvet cake and the gelato itself serves as the ‘frosting’ so good!
next recommendation? The peanut butter cup– huge, crushed up chunks of peanut butter cups tossed into their gelato.
another recommendation? green tea! Tastes just like the cold-​ice cream version of the tea!
I don’t know what this place does, but their gelato does come out tasting like an actual flavor listed on their signs.
I always get the small little flowery cups just under $ 3 and it’s the perfect amount because the people who scoops them up for you packs the cup up high with gelato.
