Walter S Newman, MD

Dr. Newman is an experienced physician who has been able to diagnose my health issues after many other doctors failed. He pinpointed my source of debilitating headaches (borderline hypertension) and within 2 weeks of blood pressure medication, my headaches were gone. He is well-​read on the latest medicine and takes into account family history, and current health concerns, before prescribing action.
In a separate issue, Dr. Newman’s vast network of physicians enabled him to refer me to a surgeon who specialized in a relatively uncommon procedure I required.
I trust Dr. Newman and his experience. If you value substance over style (I personally like his style) then Dr. Newman is the go-​to physician for you.

First time seeing Dr. Newman today, and was very satisfied with the entire visit. Instead of getting all the things I originally «asked» for, he asked me many questions (which is the best thing a doctor should do in the first visit) that allowed me to have a deeper understanding of what I need. Realized at the end that I only need about ¹⁄₃ of my requests, and probably ended up saving at least a hundred dollars. Highly recommended. The receptionists were also very professional and helpful.

Dr. Newman has been my doctor for over 3 years. I am moving to the Sacramento area and hope to find another great doctor. First, my experiences with the staff were top notch. Chelsea has been super friendly and efficient, and before her Jason was always pleasant and helpful. Dr. Newman took excellent care of me. He’s there to fix your problem, not baby you and just give you handfuls of drugs! He took care of a small problem right there in his surgery room, diagnosed a collar bone and a neck pain issue without sending me through the Xray/​MRI/​pain in the neck run around and a few others. Also, he was always happy to head to the office and show me info on the internet about my condition and fully explain what the heck is best for me. The complaints are probably a generational issue with the 20 — 40 somethings still thinking they get a trophy if they lose! Wake up people!

I was charged $ 75 for a NO SHOW?! They said they have called, or the computer generated 2 calls, but I never received it. I agree it’s our responsibility to remember my appointment time, but reminder is fairly important for me, let just say, I don’t trust their computer at all. Never feel good since day 1 visiting this office, it’s been 2 years this NO SHOW fee just made me decided to leave…

Absolutely the most unprofessional, rude, asinine Dr (or shall I even call him that) I have seen in 30 years. I was referred by a good friend of mine whom he helped years ago, and wanted his opinion on my skin condition that nobody knew how to cure. This guy out of nowhere yells, scolds, and raises his voice at me and continues to rudely interrupt me when I calmly explain my history. Who does this guy think he is? At least I didn’t get overcharged like everyone else on here… can’t believe he is still in business. watch out! karma

Dr. Walter Newman has been my GP since I moved to San Jose eight years ago. I initially came in with respiratory issues that I had been trying to get under control for the prior 15 years, (many doctors, Pulmonary tests, etc).
Dr. Newman actually took the time to «discuss and ask me questions» about my triggers. His excellent «old fashioned» medicine has had me under control, and have not had respiratory issues since.
Dr. Newman has also been my kids GP and they really feel comfortable and have been treated with excellent care.

I have known Dr. Newman for over 20 years. He is one of the best doctors in the Santa Clara County! He is kind, compassionate, and cares about each and everyone of his patients. I rate this doctor a 10!

He literally told me verbatim, «I get paid the same whether I talk to you for 5 minutes or 2 hours. I’m not answering this question as part of a physical,» when I asked him whether he thought I needed new vaccines or not. I’m sorry, but he has one job and it is to take care of people. I paid for my visit, so I would think I might warrant a couple minutes of his time. I felt like I had done him a disservice by trying to be a patient of his. I love the cut and dry straightforward approach usually, but by the end of this visit I wanted to apologize for the inconvenience of showing up in his office. There’s a reason he has such an open calendar, and if he’s worried about not having enough money coming in, maybe he shouldn’t scare off his patients.

Very negative and unprofessional

I have been seeing Dr. Newman for many years, including bringing my kids when they were young (they are all over 30 now). I have absolute confidence in his knowledge and experience, as he has always been right on target with me. I find him a caring and compassionate man and an excellent physician as well. He is a man of integrity and any billing problems over the years have been resolved quickly and fairly, in my opinion.

This guy has been a medical billing nightmare. Newman’s office over billed us for my wife’s two appointments. She felt very uncomfortable working with Newman as his office screwed up and ordered the incorrect lab work to be done on her first visit. Then his office brought her back in for a second billed visit to explain that there was a mistake. Sufficed to say, my wife changed offices, but she’s been dealing with Newman and his billing office for 5 months to get the billing discrepancy corrected. In a nutshell, we did not feel it was appropriate that we be billed for two visits when she received improper treatment on the first visit only to be called in for a second visit so they could tell her about the improper treatment.
After speaking with Newman’s outsourced billing office and his office staff for 5 months, we received a final notice. This past weekend we received a final notice from his billing office noting that my wife’s account would be sent to collections if we did not pay the outstanding balance of $ 390.00. My wife was very upset over this after all of her efforts to fix the billing discrepancy and asked that I see if I could have any luck in working this out.
Today, I contacted Newman’s office and spoke to a pleasant woman who noted that there is another office person that deals with disputes of this nature. She also noted that this person was not in the office today. She asked if she could take my information and have the doctor call back. I stated that my wife had spoken with enough people and that I wanted to speak with Newman immediately. I explained that I wanted to have the outstanding balance removed because we felt that the charges were not applicable since she didn’t receive the care she requested. After going into detail about the mistakes that were made, the women placed me on hold. When the line came back on, Newman was on the line and announced his name. I stated my name and the reason for my call.
Newman stated in a very angry tone that he would not discuss my wife’s medical care with me because he did not have her permission. I stated that I did not want to discuss her care and I just wanted him to fix the billing. Newman repeated himself and then stated that HIPAA privacy rule would not allow him to discuss my wife’s care with me. I stated that I still wanted him to remove the charges and that if he will not, I will consult an attorney. Newman then stated that I threatened to sue him and that he would not speak with me about anything anymore and hung up the phone. I don’t know for sure, but it sounded to me like a canned response that medical professionals are coached to say in case anyone mentions the term lawyer. In my opinion, Newman sounded well practiced in saying the phrase.
After thinking about it, it certainly doesn’t make any sense to me to work with a $ 300 an hour lawyer to settle a $ 390 dispute. It also doesn’t make any sense to me to pay $ 390 to Newman for a physical, incorrect tests, zero medical treatment, 5 months of stressing out my wife and his sour disposition. To take some sort of action, I have since reported this issue to Blue Shield of CA to see if they would stop any payments related to my wife’s account. I also suggested that they remove Newman from their preferred physicians network. After reading a couple more of Newman’s Unilocal reviews, I feel our experience has been right in line with the rest of the one star reviews. There plenty of excellent Doctors and Physicians out there so there is no need to roll the dice on Newman.

IF I COULD GIVE ZERO STARS I WOULD! By far the worst experience I have ever had seing a doctor or should I say trying to see a doctor. He only takes patients that are easy. Any medical case that presents even the least amount of possible effort he refuses to see. He can not even give you referrals to people who could help you. Before making the appointment I explained my condition and current medical treatment yet when I get there he calls me into his office not to discuss how we can work together to make things better or keep the status quo. He immediately tells me that he would (not could not) not help he absolutely refused to help me in any way or listen. He is lazy and has the worst toupee you will ever see. Do yourself a favor find a different doctor pretty much any doctor would be better.

He was okay but I don’t see myself returning, I only came to his office because my insurance listed him as a in-​network provider and he was close to home. He’s not the most professional doctor I’ve been to (he took a cell phone call in the middle of our consultation when he could have easily let it go to voicemail), his staff is nice however. He wants me to be his regular doctor but I’ll keep looking.

DO NOT GO HERE!!! Worst experience of my life. I was treated poorly from start to finish! First of all, I went in with a planters wart, they told me to put duct tape on it!!! (they said this would work better than freezing it).
Then I asked for blood work, they send me to the lab with $ 500 worth of tests, none of them were the correct tests I asked for! They never called me with the results. After a few weeks, I called them to see why they never called me and they said, the «doctor wants you to come in so he can talk to you about your results». So, at this point, I am freaking out, thinking there is something wrong with me! When I get there the doctor has «no idea why they called you in «…My results are normal, too bad they tested for the wrong stuff. And I got a bill for $ 150.00 for this! (they only called me in so that they could bill me again) AND I still need to retake the test…
For the kicker, they billed my insurance wrong and all my claims were denied. The receptionists told me, the billing is hired out to another company and it is out of her hands. She suggested I should call them.
Thanks Dr Newman’s office for the WORST CUSTOMER SERVICE I HAVE EVER EXPERIENCED!!!
I regret ever stepping footinto his office. At this point, I have almost a thousand dollars in unexpected medical bills and no answers.

I continue to be impressed. Dr. Newman is not interested in feeding your apprehensions, but rather in diagnosing your conditions and assuaging your fears. Although I saw his (new?) assistant this last time as opposed to him, she was very convincing that the black mark on my toenail was NOT melanoma, but just a bruise. Go here if you want an accurate idea of what’s going on with your body. DON’T go here if you are a hypochondriac!

Having Doctor Newman, and his right-​hand nurse/​office manager, watching out for me is my greatest medical experience ever. After decades of having cold, impersonal hospital clinic based doctors who I never wanted to visit unless absolutely necessary, I’ve now got a fun, accessible, country Doc who meets with me personally, watches out for my health, gets me in quickly, and rarely makes me wait. Yeah, sometimes he’s a bit quick to chalk things up to «you’re getting old» (I’m not that old!) but he’s a wonderful family doctor and I look forward to the visit rather than dreading it. When I had a serious scare with melanoma a couple years back, it was Doc Newman that found it amazingly early and did everything in his power to protect my health, with great results. I have referred friends to Dr. Newman who feel similarly. My biggest fear is that someday he’s going to retire and I’ll have to go back to the nasty world of corporate medicine.

Dr. Newman and I hit it off right away. We both grew up in San Francisco; His dad want to the same HS as me. It was fun going down memory lane. I liked the fact that he asked me what I thought I had (prior to checking me). I liked that. I guessed wrong, but still was fun to do that. A very nice doctor; very friendly. I called at 8:30 AM and got a 9:15 appointment. Can’t beat that!!! He asked for a followup next week. I thought that was good too.
I’ve had Kaiser my whole life, so this is perhaps a new experience for me. But being only ½ a mile from me and how comfortable I was with him, I couldn’t ask for more.
Yes, others mention his quirkiness. I like that. I don’t want some dry doctor who just writes prescriptions. He even took the time to explain my upper respiratory illness and how things worked in my body. I like that. He walked me through how to use an inhaler, too.

Dr. Newman has been our family’s doctor on and off, depending on insurance, for almost 11 years. As a person who worked in the health care field, I really appreciate the short waits for care, high degree of knowledge, and the habit of not relying on tests that are not necessary. My children liked it that they could understand what he said, unlike some of the doctors we went to in San Jose in which English is not their first language. He referred us to excellent doctors when needed, and his staff is excellent. One time my daughter didn’t quite understand her treatment plan, so I told her to go right back and ask again. The nurses there were happy to answer her questions without making another appointment. I also like the PA’s that do the woman’s exams in his office. We really see him as a doctor who cares for our family and not just part of the crowd.

Dr. Newman has been my doctor for about 10 years. And the way i see it i think he’s great doctor professionally speaking, he knows alot, he’s a professor at Stanford, knows a lot of other doctors, so he’s fine on medical knowledge you will never see him short on that. I can see how some people may take his humor a little personal but thats the way he is. His practice has great nurses they are also very knowledgeable.

Dr. Newman is the most unprofessional doctor that I have ever been to.
First, let me say, I’m not a hypochondriac — but I know how long it takes my body to heal, and when problems persist, I think it’s a good idea to have someone who knows more than I do check it out. I went to Dr. Newman to look at a wrist injury from mountain biking (6 months prior) and a back injury from snowboarding (3 weeks prior). Inside of 5 minutes, I began to have qualms about him. He had the attitude of, «Ok, you injured yourself. It’s going to hurt. What do you want me to do? I can spend 50,000 on you if it would make you feel better.» He went on to say that if I die within the next 30 years, it will be from a car accident or HIV (statistically speaking). He had no interest in taking x-​rays, but said he would schedule them if it would make me feel better. He did a brief physical which consisted of tapping my knees, making me walk on my toes, heels, and touching my toes. That’s it. When I expressed concern that I might have a cracked rib (based on shortness of breath, continued pain, and the recommendation of a nurse friend), he brushed it off and said, «what, do you want me to do an x-​ray to make you feel better?»
The responsibility of a doctor is to check your physical health and make you feel at ease. Doctor Newman did neither. He made me feel guilty for wanting to check up on my injuries. I silently canceled my follow up appointments with the receptionist after he left the room and have no intention of going back. Worst. Doctor. Ever.
