Established in 1977.

Skip Lightfoot opened his first auto repair and tire service store in San Jose, California in 1977. Skip’s Tire and Auto Centers has been proudly serving the San Jose area for over 35 years. A ‘Check Engine” light brought me in. After they look at it, I asked for an oil change too… and they estimated it at $ 1200++. It was ‘recommended that my front bearings on the control rods be changed and that is why it was that much. When I was called to pick up the car, I was told it would be #1900++ (total over $ 2000.
I had to be firm and complain that the estimate was $ 1200 + tax, and no more. They called back and the price went to $ 1700+. I was still firm, and fair, I thought and yet a few hours later I fot a call that said it was $ 1200+ plus the $ 200 oil change. They said they would have to put all the old parts back and would only charge me labor and the oil change. I didnt want any part of it. The manager finally called, a gentleman called Caspar and told me they would stick with the original estimate and we finally worked it out .
I saw on the invoice that it was all as estimated, and the cause of the check engine light? A loose gas cap that overlooked THAT THEY MISSED ALTOGETHER. Caspar was a professional, the others were sales and repair jerks. After slowly, but surely being overcharged with each visit, my S.O., 2 kids (with a total of 4 cars) will never go there again.
When I give an estimate for my job, as well as other professionals I work with, we keep to our word, and don’t come back and demand more… its part of maintaining a professional reputation.

Wow! What a great experience at Skip’s Auto! Was gone for a few days at a conference only to come home to one flat tire and another losing air fast. Called AAA to get my spare on and went over to Skip’s. I was thinking in my head, «They’re going to want to sell me a set of 4» but instead they were honest in confirming what I already knew – the tread was still really good and they could patch the flat. They checked the second tire and indeed that one also had picked up some metal pieces causing it to lose air, too. Well to make sure my day didn’t get any worse, they fixed both tires but only charged me for one!!! Needless to say when I do need a set of tires, I’ll be back at Skip’s. They treated me well and they know customer service!!! 5 stars is not enough for this place!

I just had a great experience at Skips! I needed to get my car realigned after a car accident I was in and they helped me right away. The service men were very friendly and helpful. Being that I do not know a lot about cars I often feel intimidated and nervous going to places but they made me feel confident and that my car was being well taken care of! Thank you Skips!

Got in my car on a rainy evening to see a warning light that I had a low tire. I instantly drove to Skip’s as I had had a good experience there having a flat fixed. JEFF GOYTIA welcomed me and despite a full bank of cars, took a look at my car instantly. He determined that the tires were just low due to the cold storm and topped all four off. He was gracious and courteous and professional. I will definitely be back for the rest of my tire needs.

Been here twice. First time was fine, but they didn’t reset my tire check light. The second time was much worse. The counter representative didn’t know anything about tires. I had made an appointment and when I came in they didn’t have record of it. They said the service would take an hour, and it ended up taking 3. Not impressed. Overcharged for poor service.

So this review is really not about tires or service on my car. Long story short my 4 year old managed to slice her finger open while I was driving down the freeway. I stopped at the first place I could to ask for a bandaid which happened to be Skip’s Tires. Truth be told I didn’t expect much since this was a tire shop. The guy behind the counter was super sweet and helpful. He was quick to show me where we could wash her up and gave us a bandaid and antibiotic ointment. Talk about customer service. Thanks!!!

Incompetent stay away. I had my car up for sale and needed to get two new tires.
I had to leave it there and when it was ready 5 hours later, they mistakenly replaced all four tires.
The employe’s response to me wasn’t an apology, instead he told me, «well, why did you only buy two tires anyway.»
There solution was to find my old tires and reinstall them but when they were unable to do so, an hour later, they gave me the additional two for ½ off. Between waiting for the install and waiting for them to fix their error it took all day. I didn’t need a discount, how about just doing the job right the first time!
The sales room and customer waiting area were dirty, the staff was rude, poorly trained and unprofessional. After speaking with store Mgt. it was clear why the store is the way it is.

I brought fleet vehicle in to fix slow leak. Ricardo said he could not fix because tires where down to ware marks, didn’t look like it to me, olwell fleet vehicle put tires on it. Two hrs later look out in parking lot my vehicle is sitting in parking lot. No one tells me it’s done & I’m on the clock now it’s 12:30 & theres a long ass line & only one person working. I spoke to young Asian guy at counter saying it would of been nice to know vehicle was done sense I’m on the clock. He said yea it would be nice to have more help too. Wrong answer asked if thay checked out brake fluid light coming on he said yes we toped it off. First corner brake light comes on checked fluid low it wasn’t toped off. Don’t tell me something you did when you did not. Not much better then jiffy lube.

My husband and I have both been impressed by this location’s service. I went in with a tire leaking air, nail found, ended up with two new tires. I figured they would suggest 4 new, because I had already replaced one tire and the rest have 50k+ miles. I ended up with 2 new tires and a few discounts. My husband went in with a leaking tire, no nail, no leak, and no charge! That’s how you get a return customer.

I really want this place to be my go-​to for tires, and they have been for years because of their helpful staff, convenient location with ample parking, free rotations/​balancing, and price match. But I’m downgrading my opinion after my latest experience…
I started with an internet search for tire options and picked one (happened to see Costco carried it at a good price). I printed their itemized price w/​installation and fees and gave my favorite tire shop a call.
Called the Blossom Hill location since they’re closer to errands we had to run. The salesperson verified the Costco price and matched it, but managed to come up with a total of $ 50 more. I asked him to itemize to understand the difference and he wasn’t able to and just talked in circles. When I realized he wasn’t going to allow me to compare line items, I just thanked him and called the Cottle location, with which I had more history.
Cottle gave me a completely different price, also higher than Costco. I gave up and called Costco to just get it scheduled, and they didn’t even answer the phone. So I called Blossom Hill again and got a different person that promised to BEAT the Costco price. I got yet another different price, but it was close so I just agreed.
The funny part was I took the Costco itemization with me to compare it to the Skip’s invoice and although they beat the Costco tire price (by a whopping $ 1 lol), they charged me more for fees like tire disposal, so the actual total was a little more than Costco. This was annoying because they claimed Costco had higher installation fees and they would be charging me more because of the price match. Makes me wonder how many other times their out-​the-​door price was actually higher due to inflated fees.

Came by with a nail in the sidewell of my tire. The SIDE of my tire. I was ready to throw out my brand-​new-​only-​6000-​miles-​on-​them tires and buy 4 new. They could have easily screwed me over by telling me I needed a new set. But nope, the guy did the water air bubble test and said I was good to go, just watch it.
Not sure how I could have had a better experience.
Oh, forgot to mention that it was 5:45 on a Sunday (they close at 6) yet they didn’t rush me or make me feel like I was a nuisance.

I had some custom work to be done on my Mustang GT, not a lot of shops were into doing it to my spec’s, These guys did! and given that it was a very involved job I am impressed that it was done not only correct, but correct the FIRST time. The quality of work is top shelf and if you want suspension work done by guys who know what they’re doing, give them a shot at it. I will give them a shot to bid for some other work that I want done as well. Great job guys!

Went back for my front brakes. Was supposed to go on Mother’s Day (yes they are open on Sundays) but put it off. I heard grinding and needed rotors too. Ugh. Should’ve listened to the guys when they said I needed to come in!

I was having battery issues and thought my alternator had gone out. Left my car with Skips to diagnose the issue and replace it if necessary along with checking my brakes, rotors, etc… all expensive repairs if needed. Well guess what? It was just a broken battery cable, my brakes and rotors were fine!!! Any other shop would have told me I was right and they were going to replace them! Casimir and Jason ROCK!!! This shop is hands down most honest out here!!! The guys are great and I HIGHLY recommend them!!!
*to the fool complaining about a little smudge or two? Hmmm their mechanics and they fixed your car… get over it!!!

I will never go back to this place. Even though I get a discount here.
I just had my oil done last week. I got the top option for an oil change.
Things I notice :
–My seat was dirty again from whoever worked on my car. (This was the second time)
–oil smudges on the door
–They were suppose rotate my tires but didn’t. I notice this because the tire that’s always losing air is still on the same side .
Now I’m wondering what else they didn’t do that was listed .
I would suggest going somewhere else.

I got a flat tire on the freeway the day before Christmas Eve. I must have driven over some metal scraps that tore a decent sized hole in my rear tire. After unsuccessfully trying to pump the deflated tire with air at a local gas station, I put the spare tire on the car and looked up local tire companies. I found Skip’s and drove on over.
We discovered my previous tire was too damaged for repair (I had driven on it for too long flat and damaged the internal support) so I had to get a new tire. I asked them for a medium-​of-​the-​line tire and they set me up with what I thought was fair and reasonable.
I left the car there for about 2 hours and received a call it was all ready for pickup. Quick, simple, positive experience.

Oil changes and car repairs will never again be a mundane chore so long as these guys are around. The employees at Skip’s always give me professional and quality service with integrity. At the same time, they’re friendly and hilarious — keeping me entertained while I wait. I’d break my car on a regular basis just to have an excuse to see these dudes if it wasn’t completely counterintuitive. :-D
Casimir is honest and knowledgeable when I need to find the best quality at an affordable price. He’s always got such a pleasant attitude regardless of the workload.
Special shout-​out to Jason for being kind enough to go out of his way to drive me home when I had to leave my car at the shop for an extended period of time. That was very cool of him. :-)
These guys are so great. Can’t tell you how refreshing it is to find a car shop that values honesty and integrity. Very awesome. You guys rock!

I read the reviews before I went and I was hoping I would get Alex. And I did! My tires were on their last leg and I had to take my car in for new tires ASAP. Alex did a thorough inspection and advised me on his recommendations according to my driving needs. The tires that I needed ran me more than I was expecting (because I wanted to be cheap) but it should last me a good long time so I won’t have to replace it again for a while. I even asked him to inspect my windshield wipers because they weren’t working right. He estimated an hour and a half for the entire thing. An hour and a half later exactly, he calls and says my car is ready and that my windshield wipers has minor defects but it shouldn’t need replacing. Awesome!
Then, of course, he had to ask me if I wanted the extended warranty but he wasn’t pushy about it. It’s very obvious he’s not out to take your money.
My car runs amazingly now because of my new tires! It brakes like it’s supposed to and accelerates like it’s supposed to. Good bye cheap plastic Barbie tires!
P. S. I did see Alex’ other co-​worker who everyone is giving bad reviews for and I can vouch that those reviews are completely correct. Thank goodness I wasn’t stuck with that guy. So, if you come here, ask for Alex!!! You will not be disappointed.

Read the bad reviews. Save your TIME and money. Take your business elsewhere. It’s almost been 2 months and the corporate phones still don’t work. and Heather has yet to respond to my messages. Horrible. It seems that Heather reads the negative reviews and just says «sorry» to get it off of her chest. Well, Heather not only have you let me down, but you’ve proven to me to believe that all these negative reviews about skip’s to be true. Thank you.
So viewers if you are looking for a tire company that will neglect you and your vehicle you’ve found the right spot! Management sucks and so does corporate.
