The ICA is an energetic visual art space committed to promoting creativity among our artists and our audience. We present exhibitions in our three galleries that include the most current, relevant and often challenging art from the region, the nation and the world. The space is activated by opening receptions, South First Friday gallery walks, nighttime projections in the front windows, panel discussions, printmaking workshops, brown bag lunches and impromptu conversations in the galleries.

History
Established in 1980.
The ICA was founded in 1980 by a group of local artists who were interested in creating a venue to exhibit contemporary art. At that time, there were a small number of non-profit organizations in downtown San Jose that showcased the work of local artists. However, they were primarily artist run galleries. The ICA distinguished its exhibition program by hiring a professional curator to lead the organization and the gallery quickly gained a reputation for curatorial excellence. That remains true 29 years later.
Today the ICA is an energetic art space committed to promoting creativity among artists and audiences. We present exhibitions in three galleries that include the most current, relevant and often challenging art from the region, the nation and the world. The space is activated by opening receptions, gallery walks, nighttime projections in the front windows, brown bag discussions, printmaking workshops, and impromptu conversations in the galleries.

Cathy K.
Manager
Cathy Kimball is the Executive Director of the San Jose Institute of Contemporary Art (ICA), responsible for artistic programming and administration.
During her ten-year tenure at the ICA she has implemented a number of new programs including an annual «NextNew» presentation, focusing on emerging Bay Area artists, as well as the ICA’s «Night Moves» program, which includes multi-media installations that project in the front window after dark. She has curated several dozen exhibitions during the past years at the ICA, and has authored numerous exhibition catalogues.
Ms. Kimball spearheaded the effort to secure a new, permanent home for the ICA. On June 8th, 2007 the ICA opened in a new space at 560 South First Street in downtown San Jose. The 3,700 square foot art space boasts 3 expanded galleries, a reading/resource room and the only open-access fine art printmaking studio in the South Bay.
