It’s due time I give my positive review. Hubby and I have been patients of dr. Bob and dr. Joy for about 2yrs.
The office is neat, clean while having a friendly staff. But, they are busy! I just love Tammy, the lovely receptionist and Karen, the cheerful medical assistant. Every time I see them both, we always have good conversations.
Now, on to the doctors. I’m bummed that dr. Joy has left the practice :-(
She was originally my doctor. Although, she was almost never on time but when she is with you in the room, she gives you her FULL attention. In the beginning, I was caught off guard since all she did was type on her laptop and not really give eye contact but as time went on, she became like a friend and confidant. She truly cared about my needs and medical issues. I do miss her.
Right now, as the office is still looking for another female doctor to fill the shoes of dr. Joy, I am now seeing dr. Bob. At first, I didn’t feel comfortable with a male doctor but after a few visits, I find dr. Bob to be kind, gentle, quick with his diagnosis and yet pretty precise. He is actually a funny guy too.
The office isn’t close to my area but I would drive and fight traffic to go.
I do that because I truly feel they are a bunch of capable people.
Get to know the staff and they will happily welcome you. I pay my copay by cash whether they ask me or not. I also am asked if I wish to have a receipt. And if I don’t pay the day of, I then send in a check. They are pretty chilled about that.

It’s a clean place and personally for me, the staff was very helpful and friendly.
As for the doctor himself, Dr. Nishime is fantastic. I don’t like going to a doctor but he was quite friendly and straight to the point which always helps. I did my annual check-​up and I was a bit worried that one or two results were abnormal but Dr. Nishime assured me that they were fine and explained why it’s NBD. Also, he gave me very helpful tips on how to fix my knee and ankle problem without surgery. As long as I stay in San Jose, I’ll keep going to this place for my annual check-​up.

Dr. Bob is my husband primary physician and raved so much about him. So we knew our newborn daughter at the time will be in good hands.
This will be an overall reviewed about the office because my daughter and I seen dr. Bob over 5 – 7 times since she’s been born.
First off the office is nice and quite, I love that! Maybe it’s because we always have our appointments around 10/​11am. The staff always greet us when we step in to the office. When we arrive we get checked into the room within 5 mins of arriving! In the past with other Drs. I always had to wait a min 15 – 30 min just to get into an exam room. Karen the nurse is so awesome! She’s a mom with an infant herself so she’ll gave us some great advice about things we can do or try out since this is our first child.
Lastly, Dr. Bob is awesome! He’s easy to interact with some dr aren’t! When dr. Bob see our infant he does a routine checks of body parts and organs, address any concerns we have, goes over anything he has concerns about, and advise us of what we can do each month in term of starting tummy time, intro solids, and etc. Dr. Bob really take good care of our daughter and he know what he’s doing. When I feel something isn’t right with our daughter I just give the office a call and Karen or dr. Bob will return my call asap and advise me. Dr. Bob make his schedule open to his newborn/​infants for emergency visit to the office. We had go in a few times already. At the same time he always let me as a mother know that I’m doing a good job with taking care of my daughter. My husband tells me thank you and im doing great but it’s nice to hear it from someone else.
I always recommend dr. Bob to my friends for a primary physician or as a pediatrician!!!

Doctor Bob is great. Very professional and attentive. But this review is based on his staff. I received a call from someone supposedly in accounting and she says I did not pay a co-​pay of $ 20 for an appointment almost a year ago! Wth?! A year ago? I know for a fact that all doctors ask me to pay the Co-​pay upfront before seeing the doctor. Plus I pay it in cash every time. Why? Because why would I charge 20 on my cc when I can just pay it in cash. She then ask me to prove to her I paid by showing her a receipt. How the heck am I suppose to know to keep receipts for a doctor’s visit almost a year ago?
Then she goes on and says «who pays cash for a co-​pay?»
Are u calling me a liar? Then she threatens to put this through collections if I don’t pay.
This is total fraud. Dr. Bob u should audit your workers because they are pocketing the money.
She claims the receptionist could have been on the phone or busy with another person so it’s not necessary to collect the Co-​pay. And not their responsibility to tell us to keep the receipt. Well if I knew u theives were pocketing it, I would have!
Every time I fill out the form u collect the money right away.
And yes I will be paying the 20 because I don’t want to mess up my 800+ fico.

I have been a patient of Dr. Robert’s for over a year now. I have had nothing but pleasant experiences thus far. Everyone in that office is extremely friendly and professional. Tammy is the receptionist & is always helpful when trying to schedule a last minute appointment. She is prompt at responding, & honestly she’s very sweet. The insurance coordinator is also very prompt at responding. She will hound the pharmacy and insurance company to have all of my issues sorted! I’m so sorry to have forgotten her name tho…
Last and most important is Dr. Bob! I have never had such a thoughtful & caring physician. He is a doctor whom I would truly trust. He cares about his my health & it shows. He has a good sense of humor as well! I wish all doctors could learn a thing or two from him! I mean honestly it’s not everyday you find a doctor who isn’t trying to push you out the door & not even look you in the eye.
Ohh by the way the wait time is impeccable! I haven’t waited in the lobby longer than 15 minutes.

This office seemed unprofessional to me. The physician’s assistant did not take notes during my diagnosis and used an iPhone for a light. They also said I had to call in to reaffirm an appointment.

Dr. Joy is amazing. I’ve been coming to her for about 7 months now, since I moved up here from Los Angeles. She is super thorough, very sweet and takes her time to talk to you and find out what’s going on. She never rushes. In addition, she is not one of those doctors who just rips out her prescription pad and starts writing you prescriptions. Love her!

I started going to Dr. Bob for my PCP and then I got in an accident for a follow up after the ER visit. He was thorough, always on TIME, listened to my complaints with sincerity and never made me feel like I didn’t know my own body. I have subsequently gone to him for all sorts of things and he has proven to be no nonsense and a great doctor. His staff is friendly and very accommodating, as well.

Been here a few times since they take covered ca insurance. Dr Bob is gr8. One of The receptionists sucks but she’s not always there, the other asian girl is gr8 and helpful. It’s difficult to get an appt with Dr Bob and almost impossible to get one with Dr Joy. Dr Bob takes his time with Q&A, he’s kinda quiet but I assume that’s normal. Waiting room is nice and clean, free parking in the back.

Dr. Bob’s office is very quick to get me in and Dr. Bob and Dr. Joy are both effective at diagnosis and treatment.

Dr. Bob rocks! He is very quick and efficient in his diagnosis and steps to help you get better. He has nailed many issues which I’ve had from coughs to bumps to joint pain. Most importantly, I can get an appointment usually the day I call, and this is unusual these days! I totally trusts Dr. Bob, his diagnosis’s have been on point, and I’ll continue to be his patient for the foreseeable future!
P. S. free parking is around the back of the building :) Jtown meters want too much coin!

I called Dr. Nishime for an appointment and was able to get in the next day. The desk person was pleasant and easy to talk to. I inquired if they take my insurance among other things and she answered all of my questions. That was a good start.
When I arrived, I was greeted by the front desk person and filled out the standard forms. In less than 10 minutes, I was taken into one of the examination rooms (clean) and the Dr. arrived shortly thereafter. He asked me how I was and what he could do for me. It was a comfortable environment and he seemed to be interested in my well being.
The office had enough seating, plenty of magazines and it was clean and neat. I like the fact that it wasn’t crowded with patients along with the usual long wait time. There is parking in the side lot (although when I parked there was only one space available out of 10) in case street parking was full.
If you’re looking for a General Practitioner, you may want to give him a call.

I just started using this medical group but I am very impressed with the quality of service and concern for their patients. I received the «What can we do for you,» approach.
Even with a complicated medical condition, they are willing to work in conjunction with my other providers to ensure that I have a comprehensive and complete concept to my care.
UPDATE: Dr. Joy has left the practice to attend to her family (understandable and when she comes back, I will return to her care). Dr. Bob is also a fantastic doctor and I’m switching my entire family’s care over to him. Since I’m a complicated case, I am seeking care elsewhere, in the mean time.
Tip: There is free, off street parking reserved for patients in the lot to the side of the building. Look for the spots marked specifically for this business.

I set up an appointment for my husband and I. Our appointment was at 9:15 AM. I had an appointment with Dr. Joy and my husband has an appointment with Dr. Bob.
As a new patient Dr. Joy made me feel comfortable! She asked a lot of questions with my background in health wise (I had a physical done) She was very helpful and I was please with my experience. She goes above and beyond to answer you questions and i love that she was take notes on her computer.
My husband said that Dr. Bob was too serious at first but he than opened up a bit. My husband was also pleased with the experience.

Dr Joy & Dr Bob are two of the most caring and compassionate doctors. They always made sure that there were no questions left unanswered. They even call us personally regarding lab results and important informations which i appreciate so much unlike other doctors who lets their assistants do it for them. For me it only shows how much they really cared for us. Dr Joy is sweet, nice, understanding, accomodating and easy to talk to. She always made me feel at ease. I can also say the same for Dr Bob. All I have are good words for this brother and sister tandem.
Less 1 star because their front desk ladies are on the incosistent side. Very helpful at times and the opposite on other times.
We hate to leave their practice but we had to switch insurance provider which they do not accept unfortunately. =(

Seriously disappointed in Japantown Medical Group and their lack of customer service.
I called in July to schedule an annual exam with Dr. Joy. The first available appointment was mid-​September. My phone had some syncing issues so my calendar was wiped out around the first or so of September. I completely forgot about my appointment and seriously thought it was coming up, otherwise, I would have gotten a call from the doctor’s office. Boy, was I wrong! I gave them a call today to check on my appointment time and was told there was none coming up. Confused, I asked her to check my appointment history. The girl on the phone said my appointment was on September 21^st. When I asked why I didn’t get a reminder call, she said they don’t do that when they are short staffed. Well, from what I can see, and I drive by here daily as I live a block or so away, they seem busy enough to hire more staff to do the simple things, like give a reminder call.
I’m not going back to this place. Major turn off that they don’t give reminder calls. Now, I have to wait another month or so to get into an OBGYN office elsewhere.
Poor customer service, VERY long wait times for the doctor and with the exception of Dr. Joy, everyone tries to get rid of you the minute you walk through the door.

The doctor is great, but the staff sucks. They do not help you with anything dealing with insurance. They leave everything up to you. He needs to get a new staff both front desk and billing.
They are billing me when my PCP was already in effect the day I went. I followed HMO rules and they still billed me $ 200 for the visit.

This review is not for the Dr. Bob because he was great but it for his TERRIBLE staff. My husband went in for a physical and was sent to get some blood work. Almost a month later and he still has not heard anything back!
He has called the office twice to follow up and still no results!
The first time he called to find out the results he was told that they could not find his paperwork??? Supposedly the «lab» misplaced it? Really??? This is the lab he was sent to by the Dr’s office. They would call the lab again and let him know. Two weeks have gone by and he has received no call back.
He contacted the office again for a second time to follow up. He asked for the Manager who was not in. He spoke to the «Receptionist» about the situation who then tried to put it back on my husband trying to insinuate it was his fault for not calling them to follow up.
Are you serious???
A month has gone by… He called your office 2 times and it’s his fault?
Usually the Dr’s office is the one that calls you with the results. So, it is safe to assume that it is the Staff’s responsibility to follow up with the lab when they know the patient has already gone in.
He mentioned she was rude and had an attitude.
My husband is one of the nicest people you can ever meet and hates to complain about anything! He asked me to write this review because he couldn’t believe how UNPROFESSIONAL the «Receptionist» was when all he was trying to do is get his results!
DR. BOB– I hope you read this because you really need to reevaluate the service that is provided by your STAFF! I would hate for this to happen to other people looking for a new MD. My husband will not be returning to your office.

Dr. Bob was my primary physician when I lived in the South Bay. Fast forward to the East Bay and I’ve had a run in with TERRIBLE doctors. EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THEM!
Ya know the saying «You never know what you have until it’s gone…»
Time is precious and I tell Dr. Bob what I’m feeling and what I think I might need and helps out. The other doctors that I’ve seen just want you to take a blood test, an MRI scan and xrays to charge your insurance up the ying yang before they will tell you that you just need «2 Aspirins and then call me in the morning.»
Dr. Bob is quick and straight to the point.

I switched doctors about a year ago, and that was probably the best choice of my life. Even though I think our healthcare is corrupt
Anyways, Japan Town medical is totally clean and perfect for ALL occasions. I’ve met with each doctor, Dr. Bob or Dr. Joy. When I messed up my ankle and wanted to see when I could run again, Dr. Bob knows his stuff. They’re super quick and will get you what you need asap.
It’s nice because Dr. Joy is also in he same building if you needed girl stuff taken care of as well.
You never have to wait a long time if you have an appt, they are all so prompt. =)
