The best! My family has been going to Dr. Hom for 35 years. Over time we’ve all scattered and left the Bay Area. We have all (unsuccessfully) tried dentists in our new home towns but always return to Dr. Hom. It’s worth the drive.

Then why am I giving 5 stars? Here is the answer:
I had been putting off dental visits for months because I am intimidated by money grubbing freaks who go straight to carving tunnels in your canines for money and call themselves dentists. Yes, root canal carving maniacs I am talking about here! The Bay Area is especially full of such dental clinics that make you believe that any dental problem has only one solution — root canal — and convince you to do it because your insurance will cover it. What most patients don’t think of, is that whether or not insurance covers the treatment, it is ultimately their own personal mouth, not the dentists’ and not the insurance companies’, so doing unnecessary treatments is like turning your freakin’ mouth into a middle man for monetary transactions. The inside information is that in shiny dental clinics, the dentists and their assistants make money as a percentage of the cost of the dental treatment given to patients and not by the hour or number of patients treated. Therefore, it is in their best interest to give you the most expensive treatment.
More than a year ago, I had sharp toothache and saw one of those fancy dentists in Sunnyvale with fake 5 star Unilocal reviews. Believe it or not, the cute receptionist ask me what’s wrong and as soon as I mention toothache, she says I probably need a root canal. That alarmed me — I saw greed in her — a person who by no means is qualified to advise on dental problems. I got an X-​ray in the room and the dentist kept on saying that I need a root canal, showed me a video on root canal and got ready to do it! I told them I will get back to them and went home. My wife who had seen Dr. Hom for cleaning a couple of times, encouraged me to get a second opinion. I called the Sunnyvale dentist and asked for my X-​rays. I called over and over but they kept avoiding me, asking why I wanted the X-​rays. At that point I firmly told them that I have legal rights over my medical records and that I need my X-​rays immediately. This made them give up and I got a hold of my X-​rays finally. I did extensive google searches and looked at my own X-​rays which convinced me that the cavity had not reached anywhere near the nerve, which meant I needed a simple filling and absolutely no root canal. I took these X-​rays to Dr. Hom without giving him any history. He quickly looked at them and said that all I need is a filling and nothing more. I asked him if he wanted to do a root canal and he convinced me that it not needed, period. He did the filling and saved me from going through unnecessary root canals.
A year later, my dental cleaning appointment showed another tooth showing some suspicious activity and Dr. Hom told me all about it and encouraged me to floss every night so that we could save this tooth from any decay and filling in the future. He also convinced me that a filling would be the worst case scenario and there will be no need for root canal in this case either. He strongly believes that no treatment should be done unless medically necessary and if need arises, only the bare minimum essential treatment should be given.
My wife brings up her dental concerns with Dr. Hom now and then, and Dr. Hom treats her in the same honest way.
Moral of the story:
If you need an honest, truly experienced and good natured dentist, go to Dr. Hom. He is likely in his late 60s and does not work to mint money but instead, has not retired because he enjoys his work and is a happy man! Tiffany, his dental assistant is also great, sincere, honest, really nice and 100% genuine. Both of them are very verbose and explain you exactly what they are doing throughout your procedure. Also, this is not your average ‘wholesale’ dentistry, so they know their patients’ faces and names, making you feel special and safe!

My family’s relationship with Dr. Hom goes back to ¹⁹⁷⁹⁄₁₉₈₀ when my mother first saw him in high school. My entire family goes to see him and my parents now live out of state (but twice a year visits is the excuse for a vacation, right?)
Just the other day I had an appointment with Dr. Hom and his assistant Tiffany and we talked about our favorite movies for the first 20 mins. I’ve never had any ill will, unkind words, dentist anxiety, guilt feelings for slacking off on the dental hygiene, or stress when it comes to this most professional of dentists. He’s non-​judgmental, doesn’t rip away at the sensitive areas of the mouth, remembers names and faces, has great availability, and truly is a one-​of-​a-​kind type of doctor that I’ve never again encountered in the multiple arenas of health & wellness that I’ve ever had to deal with.
I know it’s incredibly greedy to say I don’t want this man to retire, but I really don’t. Because it’s not just the excellent care he provides (although, I would put Dr. Hom up against any of my friends dentists in a heartbeat), but its the friendship he’s given to my family for so many years now. That day is going to come, though, where he tells me that this visit will be the last, and I only hope that we’ll keep in touch long after its all said and done.

I have had a fear of dentists my entire life. They are either insensitive, or just want to charge you for every procedure possible. I wish I would have met Dr. Hom years ago. He really is the nicest person, and you can tell he actually cares about his patients. I will not go anywhere else until he retires!

Like all these other reviewers I want to say how wonderful Dr Hom is. It doesn’t take long to realize that he is unlike most other dentists in that he genuinely seems to care about you, and what’s in your best interest. I can’t recommend him more. I have been going to his office for about seven years and I don’t have a single negative thing to say about my many dental experiences with him. Thank you Dr Hom!!!

I was one of those people who would avoid a dental visit until the last moment (too many bad, painful visits).
NOW I can say I see the dentist 2x a year, THANKS to DR Kenneth Hom. He is in my opinion as well as my closest friends opinions the BEST BEST EVER dentist. When you call for an appointment he always ask how you are before getting down to setting up the date and is very easy to work with to help meet your schedule.
When I first came to see him around 1989+, my teeth and gyms needed tender loving care. I tell you when he works on your mouth you hardly feel his touch. I am so glad my friend/​baby brother told me about him.
When I found Dr Hom, I was living in San Jose, then after many years moved to Cameron Park (east of Sacramento). Did I change dentist, HECK NO, I drove 3 hrs to see Dr. Hom! I told him I will NOT see another dentist unless I am over 500 MLES from his office and I mean it. Have an appointment tomorrow and will be driving only 90 miles because I have moved a little closer (smile).
If you want the BEST, most attentive, gentle, fun, only needed dental work, WIIL NOT push you to get unnecessary work, patient first dentist then KENNETH HOM DDS is your man.

I’ve never had a different dentist than the one, the only, Dr. Kenneth Hom. As far back as I can remember, my mother would always take me to see this guy. He’s always been a very personable guy, and usually answers his own phones (at least I noticed that). My mother, brother, and myself have all used him as our primary dentist. I’m the only one left living locally, and no matter where in the Bay Area I live, I’ll always use Dr. Hom as my dentist. I’m 30 by the way.

I had to find a new dentist due to my work changing my coverage. I picked Kenneth Hom DDS from the Unilocal reviews. This guy rocks. Best Dentist I have ever been to. My daughter is very happy too. I am almost excited to see him again… Almost!

Dr. Hom is the best dentist ever. My whole family has been seeing him since I was a child. My grandparents just started going as well. He makes you feel very comfortable. I dread the day that I may have to find another dentist.

It took me many many years to find a dentist like Ken Hom. He is by far, the best, most honest, capable dentist I have ever been to. He is not in it for money but the joy of denistry and healing people. Dr. Hom is a rare find.

Technically he is a really good dentist, but we never feel like he is trying rack up charges like the dental mill we tried before coming to Dr. Hom. Our family has been seeing Dr. Hom for 20 years. When our family dentist retired we asked friends and he was a neighbor of our close friends. It turns out he is like the small town dentist that is always up beat and interested in what is going on in your life. He and his assistant have been working together as long as we have been going there and they are great. He does what needs to be done, is quick and efficent, and works with our schedules. He even took care of my in-​laws teeth as they aged and was super gentle with them. Strangely, we always looked forward to going to the dentist.

Dr. Kenneth Hom, he really is very nice i have been going to him since the 80’s, and he will take you in even if you do-​not-​have-​dental-​insurance, and will allow you to make payment on a payment plan. Very kind NOT MONEY HUNGRY OR GREEDY. He really takes good care of his patience with real care.

Nicest dentist ever. I started seeing Dr. Hom when I was a child. I remember all of my friends in elementary school hated going to the dentist, but I have nothing but fond memories of Dr. Hom’s big smile and ongoing compliments about how great my teeth always looked. When my new insurance didn’t cover him, we still paid out of pocket for his services. My own children now look forward to going to the dentist and remind me when it’s time to schedule their appointments. I am now searching for an insurance provider that is guaranteed to cover his services because he is well worth it. Such a wonderful, kind, gentle practitioner, and I wouldn’t dream of going elsewhere.

I agree 100% with Bryan. Dr Hom is the nicest person I know. I let my teeth go and had to have a root canal. Dr Hom didn’t make me feel back at all. GREAT DENTIST! Very calm with kids too!

You know the kind of dentist that makes you feel bad or guilty for not going more often? Dr. Hom is the opposite of that. He’s genuinely nice — the kind of nice where you’d say «one of the nicest people I know», if it didn’t sound so cliché. He’s done some excellent restoration work for someone I know. And someone else I know travels from Sacto just to see him. Dr. Hom is highly recommended.
