Bay Area Redwood Fence & Deck

I wrote a review for Bay Area Fence and Deck a couple years ago and I just found that it is posted under Chucks’ Railroad Bar and Grill (Westwood CA) along with someone else’s review of Bay Area Fence and Deck. I tried to find some way on Unilocal to contact them and let them know but that doesn’t seem possible. So I decided to put this notice on here instead.

Bay Area Redwood Fence & Deck exemplifies the saying, «you get what you pay for.» I was enticed by the low bid but didn’t realize at the time that the low price from BARFD meant remarkably low quality workmanship. You get what you pay for.
This means gates that could hardly close.
They did not use pressure treated wood for the kick boards.
The posts were insufficient in depth and torked.
They used nails that caused boards to split.
The concrete around the post was very sloppy.
So, once the work was complete, I made numerous reports to Bay Area Fence and they sent out various guys to repair the sticky gates and address the posts that had shifted. Would you believe that not one of them had decent carpentry skills and knew how to make repairs. Their way to fix the sticky gate was to shave off the excess wood from the post. Oh, and that so called ten year warranty? Read the fine print. It does NOT include Labor. Michael came for a visit and said he would cover materials but insisted that I would be charged for labor, $ 85/​hr. Seriously??? No remorse. Lots of denial. Customer satisfaction is clearly not in this company’s vocabulary. DItto for the owner, Julia.

that is not what happened mike and you know it. my neighbor waited 2 weeks for her estimate, and then yes she said she would not be using YOUR COMPANY. CAN’T SAY I BLAME HER. but for you to lie and say you had her estimate ready is pure B.S. for the record i did receive a nice fence from this company 4 years ago, after my insistence of using con heart redwood with a 2 inch overlap. you also jerked us around on 3 previous jobs i had set up for your company. no returning calls, then saying you never got the calls. a lot of this is my fault for continuing to give you chance after chance. 4 stars for my fence. 1 star for the way this business is being run. he has only called now because i left him a negative review. all mike had to say was i don’t want the jobs and i would have moved on, which is exactly what i told him the very first night i gave him my neighbors phone number and address. another thing that bothers me is you have called my neighbor and myself more times today, than you ever did in that 2 week period. she already got her new fence Mike, you can leave her alone now.

I’ve had Bay Area Fence and Deck do three different jobs at my home in Dublin. All three times they performed at the highest level, from beginning to end. The first two jobs were basic fences. Jack came out and reviewed the situation, then a couple of days later (just like he said) he generated a quote that was the best pricing of the three quotes we received (by quite a bit). They came when they said they would, did a great job extremely quickly, and the workers were very pleasant and considerate.
The third job was much more complicated. I wanted to have a deck and arbor built to replace a 30 year old rotting structure in our backyard. My requirements were very specific, requiring very detailed consideration of an existing wall, and my not wanting to disturb a hill in the vicinity. Jack came out TWO TIMES to make sure he understood the requirements and to make sure the quote and plans were accurate. Coming out twice before a deposit is given shows a lot of commitment to customer service. Jack told me that they would get to it in 5 weeks. Sure enough, 5 weeks later, I got the call just like they promised. They had two guys come out, led by Julian. They worked very hard in 100+ degree heat, working very diligently. These guys were amazing and Julian in particular is a special craftsman. As the thing was going up, I asked Julian to make a few minor modifications, and he did so happily and correctly. Also, at one point, there was a design flaw that we bumped up against (my fault). Julian and I talked it out, and then he executed beautifully. I could not have been happier with the final result, and Bay Area Fence and Deck’s quote was considerably lower than their competitors. The front office is very professional (especially Nancy), Jack is exceptionally professional, personable, knowledgeable and detail oriented, and the workmen are just great people. You will not go wrong hiring these guys to do your fencing and decking work. My deck/​arbor looks fantastic, and if I ever have fencing and decking needs, I’ll call them without hesitation.

I had Bay Area Fence rebuilt one side of our house with two new gates. They were very gung-​ho having new business. Our new fence/​gates were done in April. It’s now just July and one of our gate have shifted and could no longer be opened. The other gate, well the latch won’t even latched so the gate keep swinging open.
I called them the 3^rd week of June for the repairs. No one answered, so I left a message. No returned called, so I called back the 2^nd week of July. Jessica answered but could not help me so she passed me on to a Chinese or Asian woman (not the most pleasant to deal with). I explained the problem, so she said…“oh, this happens all the time” ok, well I just need you to come out and fix it. She said she can’t get anyone out to do the repair for another 5 – 7 weeks. ARE YOU KIDDING ME? For a repair? Repair for a poorly done job? 5 – 7 weeks without a confirmed date.
I called back 2 days ago to follow up on when they will come out. They still could tell me when they will be able to come out. What the hell?!
They were very fast to cash my check, but can’t be bothered to repair their work.
If you are in need of a new fence or gate, find another company.

To address the owner’s comment: I definitely have not mistaken his business for another. How do I know? First, because I meticulously researched fence companies, and selected his as my first (and only) to contact for an estimate. I was very impressed with the reviews here, so I used this as my starting point. Since I had no other outstanding requests for estimates at that time, I know I have not made a mistake. Second, at the owner’s recommendation, I called back to schedule another estimate. I know it’s the same company because I spoke with the same woman — a sweet, helpful lady with a very pronounced Asian accent. I recognized her voice immediately. I did not actually schedule another appointment, as she indicates that they are now booked out through September. However, she mentioned a concern that their «big trucks» would not be able to maneuver in our area. This is the exact same thing that was mentioned when our last appointment was cancelled — a concern that it was too steep, and the company’s big trucks would not be able to get to our property to do the work.
I stand by my comment that this company does not particularly seem to want work in the 95 033 zip code. I suppose it’s possible that there are multiple employees with differing views, and we happened to get stuck with the guy who doesn’t want to come out, but I definitely haven’t mistaken this business for another.
It’s just an FYI — YMMV.

Called them, they asked for the address and scheduled an appointment. a few days before the appointment, they cancelled it.

We had the most pleasant of experiences with Bay Area Fence. Jack gave an estimate at the time scheduled. The price was right. We accepted the offer. Our job was a smallish one but he said they were backed up 3 – 4 weeks and would try to work our job in. We got a call two days later that they would be here the next afternoon. They were here that afternoon, did a great job carting away the old fence and installing a nice new one. Did a great job cleaning up. We were very impressed with the service and the people involved. I would recommend this company to anyone.

My call to 3^rd or 4^th fence company ! — I ask do you do jobs in Fremont? yes. Can I make an appt? Yes Her cel phone rings — I have to put you on hold — 4 minutes later — We can come our Friday 1:30 — 3 pm — I said closer to 1:30 will be better — She said let me have the estimator call you! — So, these people can not even MAKE an appt. Let alone keep it!

We had exactly the same experience as the previous reviewer giving one star — We filled out their online form and asked for a quote for 500 lineal ft of fencing and a possible follow up project in our front yard but no one even bothered to get back to us in more than a week. So we decided to also call their office, and the lady who answered promised a call back within 24 hours from an estimator. That did not happen either. Good thing there are enough alternative businesses out there who are happy to take care of our project!

Why would anyone use a firm that will not even schedule a visit to see what needs to be done? The person who answered the phone after my initial inquiry prevented the owner from getting our business. Simple customer service skill set would help them increase their business. Not sure this company will be around much longer if the owner is not engaged enough to fix this issue.
If they want to bid on the 5000′ of fencing we need replaced the owner should have returned my call.

well not a good experience for us. sales man that came to give us an estimate not friendly at all. he seemed bother and in a hurry. also called 30 mins before scheduled time for estimate and said he would be 90 mins late! wow not great customer service.

I can’t imagine it gets any better than this. I got four estimates on a new fence for my yard. Bay Area Fence was the least expensive of all four, had the best warranty policy of them all, and was the most professional and accommodating to my schedule. Due to issues that had nothing to do with me or them (*cough cough* neighbor *cough cough*), they had to put up with me asking them to hurry up and wait a lot. They were the epitome of patience and understanding, and when it was finally time to hurry up and NOT wait, they scheduled me for just a couple of days out, showed up right on time, got the work done exactly as promised, and it looks AMAZING. They did an awesome job at a great price. Way to go, Bay Area Fence, and thank you!

Bay Area Redwood Fence installed the fence for my neighbor a few years ago and did such a great job I hired them to install my fence this year. They have excellent service, their prices are reasonable, and they start and finish when they say. What more can you ask for? I highly recommend them and plan to hire them again for future projects.

I had 145′ of backyard fence in need of replacement. Bay Area Redwood Fence came in with a quote $ 500 under the competition, using superior redwood lumber, and they did the whole job in one day including removal of the old fence and trimming back a couple of large shrubs and trees that were encroaching on the old fence. They were super easy to work with and flexible when a scheduling snag came up. Plus, the finished fence is solid, looks great and is built to last. The neighbors were impressed with the price, the product, and the service too. Thumbs up all around.

We had Bay Area Fence come out and replace a 31′ section of fence in our backyard with a 6′ redwood fence plus privacy lattice. The total cost came to $ 1122, and they did a fantastic job. Both the scheduling and the work itself was done very quickly and professionally, and the new fence looks great. Very happy with them, and would definitely recommend them.
