Wayne M Wong, DDS

I have been going to Dr. Wong for 5+ years now. He is so knowledgeable, trustworthy, and dependable. Many of my family members go to him as well. We will drive from all parts of the bay area and even southern California to go get our cleaning, fillings, root canals, etc. done. He is very comprehensive in his services, and will always give a very thorough explanation of the work that needs to be done. He also often will give a follow up phone call to make sure that everything is still going well, so I feel really comfortable with any work that needed to be done in the office!

I have been going to Dr. Wong for over 15 years. Decided to finally write a review for him. His office in located on Clement street corridor along retails shops. On first glance the office does not feel sterile like other Dental/​Medical offices I’ve been to. I would describe the office as quite cozy and warm with a nice small sitting area, complete with fireplace and candles.
The front office is quite friendly and willing to offer information, parking advice, and recommendations of local retail support while I waited for my family’s checkup and services. On several occasions, they even helped me feed my meter while I had service done.
Dr. Wayne has a very personable demeanor, yet professional. I can’t say I’ve had any major work done yet. Services he’s performed include teeth cleaning, chipped tooth repair, and teeth whitening. Come to think of it, I should thank him for my exemplary dental habits and preventative measures. I’m in my forties and still have all my natural teeth! Better to eat with!
I’m very glad that Dr. Wong also sees children, as both of my kids are at ease with him. So far so good, except for the anticipation and my bracing for…
you guessed it, my kids will require braces in the future. Big teeth and small mouths is not a great combo.

Wayne is an amazing dentist — he makes me feel so comfortable even though I hate going to the dentist! He answers every question I have and is super knowledgeable (he reads about dentistry for fun!).
I drive 90 minutes each way to see Wayne because I know I will get the best impartial advice on my teeth issues.
If you live in SF — then you’re lucky to have him so close by!
For full disclosure — Wayne is also a good friend, but he didn’t ask me to write this review (he doesn’t even know about it!). FYI — he is even passionate about dentistry outside the office too.

Wayne has been my dentist for 10+ years. Professional, friendly, walks you through everything, makes sure that your dental care is taken care of, while helping address any concerns. Keep it up Wayne!

Wayne is the best dentist in the bay! He is caring and detailed. Cal and UCLA grad who is extremely knowledgeable on all the new developments.

I have been with Dr. Wong for 5 years and have always felt satisfied and well treated by the staff and Dr. Wong. His office is warm and friendly. His follow up is excellent and and he will refer to other DDS issues that are outside of his practice. My whole family sees him for dental care.

I think I owned the title of his furthest traveling patient for many years.

I have been seeing Dr. Wong for six years now and still extremely satisfied with him as my dentist. He is someone I can trust to take care of me and my teeth. Twice a year, I see him for cleanings and x-​rays. Here is a breakdown of my experiences:
Environment:
His office has always been clean and well decorated. I like it because it doesn’t smell or feel like a dental office. The flatscreen TV is a nice touch. If you MUST watch something, tell him and he’ll change the channel for you.
Customer Service:
Dr. Wong and his staff are attentive and friendly. Although there were several front desks in the last six years (normal for this type of profession), Claudia has been the only dental assistant, which is comforting. I always get a reminder call 1 – 2 days prior to my visits. During my visits, the receptionist is usually very sweet and always offers me a beverage. After to the visit, Dr. Wong would give a much appreciated care call. I have been to many dentists before Dr. Wong, and have yet to receive customer service to this level.
Dentistry:
Comparing him to other dentists, I can say that he loves what he does and I can tell he’s knowledgeable through his explanations. He is also very thorough with his cleanings and examinations, but also gentle. After my examinations, Dr. Wong would debrief me on the procedures and the steps needed to keep my teeth pearly white and cavity free.
I have never felt any pressure from Dr. Wong about getting extras during my visits. Yes, he did suggested a couple of things here and there, but nothing out of the ordinary or intrusive/​offensive.
Filling:
Fortunately for me, I’ve only had to do one filling with Dr. Wong in all of six years. I am so glad that I haven’t needed anything else *knock on wood* like a root canal (shudders). He maintained my teeth well (or is that me?). During the filling, he would keep me updated as to what he’s doing, again, a consoling factor. But keep in mind, not every dentist do this.
However, my mom has had her bridges and root canals done by Dr. Wong. My mom saw another dentist through several high recommendations from her coworkers because it was time for her to redo her three bridges (yes, THREE!). The other dentist quoted her some ridiculous amount because she expected my mom to haggle and bargain with her. My mom didn’t, so she lowered the price by half. My mom was uneasy, so I suggested Dr. Wong for a second opinion. That was five years ago, and he is still her dentist. She drives four times a year from San Jose to see Dr. Wong (I am so jealous of her insurance, I only get two visits), and was pleased everytime.
Overall:
I highly recommend Dr. Wong. He is knowledgeable, loves his profession, professional, caring, gentle with his hands, has attentive staff, calming environment, and is up to date. After going to several dentists (one who asked a hygienist out on a date while drilling on my teeth), I am sticking to one that I trust. Thank you Dr. Wong for keeping my smile beautiful.

like most people, i hate going to the dentist. a past experience has traumatized me & since then i have refused to have anesthesia for any procedures. you heard me — i let them drill without having novocaine injected. call me crazy, but that’s the extent of my fear.
that has all changed now that i have chosen dr. wong to be my ‘official’ dentist. i cannot say enough kind words about him, his staff, & his overall work. i look forward to my next appointment.

Dr. Wong has been my dentist for the last 4 years. My teeth are pretty nice, so there isnt much work done usually. =(However today, I was told I had a cavity! =(
I always get a courtesy phone call from his staff to remind me of my appointment.
I have referred many friends and clients to Dr. Wong. I dont even mind driving all the way down to Clement for my appointments.

~Customer Service
He and his staff provide the personal attention you could only dream of getting from, well, anywhere. They really take customer service to a whole new level. I always get reminder calls days in advance, and when I arrive the receptionist is friendly and always offers me a beverage. I also get follow up calls from Dr. Wong himself asking how I’m feeling. He has also referred me to a great orthodontist, who he occasionally calls to check on my treatment progress. (Seriously, that can’t be the norm of all dentists!) You can tell that he really cares about his patients. He is also always very thorough in explaining what he’s doing to my teeth! Every visit to Dr. Wong is a learning experience, haha. I live in San Jose, and he’s such a good dentist that I drive to San Francisco every time I have an appointment (a little ridiculous, I know… but I’d rather go to a great dentist that is far away than a mediocre dentist that is 5 minutes from my house) He’s always very accommodating to this and is always considerate when scheduling appointments, keeping my 1 hour trip in mind.
~Dentistry
Dr. Wong knows what he’s doing (well, duh). He is very gentle and… dextrous? haha. His hands are like magic!
I remember when I first visited him, he always used to do this thing where he tells me to open and close my mouth while he taps my neck and jaw. I think it was a routine check to see if there were any abnormalities… like cancer or something? He explained it to me, but I kind of forgot. I thought I would include it in this review because I don’t think many dentists do that! (Cool!)
— Cleaning
My teeth always come out spotless! He explains what he’s doing, and always does a great job. He has this fancy x-​ray machine that can project the x-​ray onto his huge TV. If you ask to see your x-​ray, or if you want an explanation to what is going on in your mouth (hahaha), he’ll gladly work his high-​tech gizmos and zoom in on the x-​ray to tell you what is going on. It’s like… a class… and the subject is MY teeth.
–Tooth Extraction
I had one of my teeth extracted for my orthodontic treatment. Dr. Wong was very thorough in explaining what he was going to do, step by step, so I knew exactly what was going on and wouldn’t be left in the dark about the process (much appreciated, helped alleviate my nervousness). I was scared before going in, but Dr. Wong assured me everything was going to be okay, and zip, bam, done, I didn’t feel a thing.
Honestly, there are so many shady dentists that are just out to get your money. My previous dentist told me I needed multiple fillings without a proper explanation as to why and where, I was skeptical and changed dentists (to Dr. Wong). He told me that my cavities were only on the surface, and with proper care, I wouldn’t have to get fillings. He definitely saved me some cash, and opened my eyes to how careless some dentists really are!
~Environment
Upon entrance, Dr. Wong’s office is very welcoming and has a cozy feeling. It’s not one of those offices that is a square box with white walls and fluorescent lighting. It is extremely well decorated and has a light, homey feeling. What’s funny is that he even went to such lengths as to put up some scenic posters above his cleaning chairs so that his patients can look at them while he’s working on their teeth. I asked him about this, and he told me that it also helps to keep patients calm. This may be such a small thing, but I am so thankful for those posters (they work!), it helps to focus on palm trees and a beach view while someone is pulling out your tooth than to stare at a blank ceiling. Also, the bathroom is spotless and nicely decorated. Seriously, it’s a nice restroom. Check it out.
Oh, yeah, whenever my appointment is over, he brings out a tray, decorated with a flower, with a warm towel to wipe my face, a toothbrush for me to bring home, a mini container of floss, and an airplane suitable bottle of toothpaste! So nice!
I hope this helps alleviate any skepticism about visiting Dr. Wong. I know my teeth are in good hands!

I’ve been seeing Dr. Wong for all my dentistry work for the last 4 – 5 years and he’s great. Prior to meeting him, I went to several different dentists and could not find a good one worth sticking to.
I love the location and the interior décor; it’s very welcoming. Dr. Wong cleary enjoys what he does and it shows in his work. He uses up to date technology and provides the best service. He listens to what your needs are and explains what the best course of action would be.
I have recommended a ton of friends and family members to Dr. Wong and they have all been very pleased with his work.
My days of hunting down a good dentist is definitely over.

Dr Wong clearly takes customer service seriously, from the moment you step into his clinic, and even after you step out.
Whenever I see dentists in the past, I’ve come to expect that I have to wait a loong time before it’s my turn. Not so with Dr. Wong. He respects your time and makes sure he schedules appointments with enough time in between. When he expected to be late once, he even called me to let me know ahead of time.
I’ve had traumatic experiences with dentists before. One, for example, I swear was trying to set a world record of # of patients seen in a day. He proceeded to drill my tooth even though I was still feeling pain after the anesthesia, despite my protests. I was tempted then to prove that his fingers will lose the battle against my molars in a fight. Dr. Wong, however, makes sure his procedures are as pain-​free as possible. On one occasion, I believe he injected me with anesthesia and waited patiently more than four times, because for some reason it was so hard to make me numb.
When Dr Wong explains so thoroughly what I procedure I need, and why I need it, I can tell he obviously knows his stuff, and is really into what he does. Don’t ask me why anyone would find novocaine, cavities, and root canals so fascinating. I’m just glad I know Dr. Wong!

I first saw Dr. Wong a few years ago, through high recommendation of a friend. Solid referral and I’ve recommended him to other friends of mine, all of us who are still seeing him. Words to describe Dr. Wong: extremely knowledgeable, gentle, remembers you and your teeth, thorough, explains procedures, gives options, excellent with sensitive teeth, no pressure to take on a procedure you don’t want. He’s nice to his staff, and his staff like him too — hence, the very, very low turnover, and familiar faces each time you walk in. You walk into his dental office, and instead of sterile white walls and maybe a dirty fish tank, you are greeted with warm colors and a neat, tidy sitting area with every magazine subscription known to man. The entire office is very well kept and very clean. The office is also located on the sunny side of the street — a plus for being out in the cold, cold Richmond District.
Immediately his friendly front desk person, Christina, greets you, with a smile on her face (it’s good that the staff enjoy working here!). You rarely have to wait past your appointment time before seeing him. He has already reviewed your chart before sitting down and remembers the quirky things about your teeth that make you, YOU, and addresses any concerns you have professionally and thoroughly. He always remembers that I have über-​sensitive teeth, and slathers on that numbing gel before starting. Aah. Relief.
Now, the fun begins. Unlike other dentists I’ve been to, Dr. Wong tells you exactly what he’s doing before he starts the procedure and continuously through it, so you never are left wondering «and what’s he doing now?» He also doesn’t make unnecessary small-​talk, so you don’t have to garble out an answer to «so have you ever been to hawaii?» with a hand, a pick, a mirror, and that vacuum-​my thing all sticking out of your mouth. Dr. Wong is also so GENTLE. Never has he forced a pick into a crevice or pulled your jaw open to see a tooth in the back. He acknowledges discomfort and works around it. Dr. Wong is also very thorough. He’s the only dentist who has FLOSSED my teeth at the end of the cleaning. Whoo! Strange feeling, having someone else floss you, but at least you know he cares.
All in all, top notch dentist. Very up to date with the latest dental knowledge. He does the teeth whitening procedures there too, but I have yet to try them — by the way, he has never pressured me to get it done, nor any other procedure. I’ve never had a problem with Dr. Wong’s work, nor do I ever foresee having one in the future. I highly recommend this skilled dentist!

AWFUL. I had a nightmare of an experience with this man, and he is the WORST dentist I have ever been to or will ever have.
The first time I went to see Dr. Wong was for a cleaning and exam when his practice was located at Stonestown. No great impressions then, just seemed like another average dentist, so I decided to stick with him.
He later moved to his current location on Clement and I was really impressed. It was a nice location with modern equipment and amenities. I went to see him later because of a chipped front tooth. That’s when his true lack of skills really began to emerge.
Something felt funny when he was repairing my chipped front tooth. I could hear and feel him using a drill. A loud drill. «Oh, that’s how chipped teeth are supposed to be repaired,» I thought during the procedure. When that was done, Dr. Wong told told me that the surfaces of my teeth were «wrinkly» and that they’re more prone to cavities. He then told me he would like to «fix» that. He didn’t go into detail about what he would do, so I took a while to think about it. When he saw that I was hesitant, he tried to scare me into doing this procedure. «You’re going to have to get root canals if your teeth aren’t protected.» I never had a cavity in my life, but hearing the words «root canals»? Well that sure did it for me. Looking back, I should have known better that this procedure was completely unnecessary and should have never been done.
After that procedure was done, I found out he just put a coating on the surfaces of some teeth to protect them. Fine. But what he also did along with the coating horrified me. He drilled away at the surfaces of my teeth. Yes, as in gone permanently. The top surface of one of my teeth was completely gone. It used to be pointy. Now that point isn’t there anymore, only a depression remains. He also drilled large craters in my molars. Could you believe it?! He told me while he was doing it that he was fixing my «bite» because the coating might cause unevenness. But he just made it more uneven than it ever was. I didn’t realize what he was actually doing and he didn’t explain it to me before or while he was doing it. I only found out, to my shock, afterwards.
That’s not the only part. The chipped tooth that he repaired? It turned out completely UNEVEN. Only the corner of my tooth was chipped and the rest of that tooth was unaffected and still in perfect shape. My tooth became uneven because he had DRILLED AWAY the unaffected part of my tooth. So not only did I have a front tooth that was shorter than it’s neighbors, part of that tooth was gone forever. It was so obvious. Accident or not, he did not mention it. How could he honestly not have seen it? Or maybe he did, realized he botched it, and protected himself by not telling me. Etiher way, he took advantage of me because I was young and naïve.
I was horrified when I saw the results. I was completely miserable. Traumatized. Words couldn’t describe the anger and shock I was going through. How could a professional do this? It took a couple of years for me to return to a dentist’s chair.
Despite constantly warning my family members to stop going to Dr. Wong, they ignored me. They paid for it. Literally. Dr. Wong filed a claim with our insurance that he provided my mother with a bite guard. She never got one. He took adavantage of her and denied he ever fit her for a guard, which is completely UNTRUE. The rest of my family has also complained about pain and just bad work from the job he’s done on their teeth.
Should a dentist pressure or scare you into doing unnecessary procedures? Never. Besides the botch fest, he always pressured me into getting veneers and whitening. Thank God I never considered doing that or who knows how it would’ve turned out. Should a dentist always have a new staff everytime you visit him? No, not a good sign. Using gimmicks like a «dental spa» to lure patients? Skills and word of mouth should be able to do that alone. And the biggest sign of a bad dentist? The bad work. And he accomplishes that very well.
Just stay away from this shady dentist.

Ive been going to Dr. Wong for over 4 years. He’s definitely the nicest and most patient dentist I’ve ever had. He explains every procedure to you, and gives you as much scientific detail as you are comfortable with.
He uses the latest technology, and always references current journals and research. You know he keeps up to date with the latest and greatest science, so you don’t have to worry about getting out-​dated procedures. I’m a research engineer, so having the latest and greatest knowledge is very important to me.
I am currently living between San Jose and Los Angeles for my job, and will only go to Dr. Wong. It’s definitely worth the wait and commute to San Francisco.

I was so impressed the first time I paid Dr Wong a visit. His office is set up like a spa. The waiting area offers tea, hot chocolate, and a fireplace! Once I sat in the dental chair, I was offered a warm towel presented on a silver plate. Dr Wong creates an atmosphere that is more like getting a beauty treatment than medical attention.
Dr Wong really cares about his patients and even calls me after the appointment to make sure I’m still doing ok. I’ve referred him to everyone I know and all my friends and family have been very happy as well.
This is how all dentist offices should be!
