Treasure Island Sailing Center

I decided to go on a Community Sailing Day Meetup event sail. I had never heard of the Treasure Island Sailing Center, but it is truly great that an organization like this exists to teach people basics of sailing in the SF Bay Area. I didn’t think it was that hard to find with signs and GPS. TISC has Community Sailing Days each month. I might go again. The boat we went on was only a 24 ft boat or around that I’m not sure. It was kind of tight with 4 people on the boat and I was sitting up at the tip of the front of the boat a lot. We went around the north end of the San Francisco peninsula as most people do. There’s good views of SF and Golden Gate Bridge. I’ve done that before, but I’d always be willing to do it again. The trip wasn’t complete luxury and that cheap at $ 25. I’m probably still looking for the best way to get out sailing.

I cant really say that after a week of TISC sailing im a pro, but i can say that this completely awesome, fun and inviting program helped me feel confident, excited and totally phyched for sailing and everyday of the camp. The weather wasnt completely sunny and beautiful, but it definatly didnt effect any part of the fun. After the first day of learning basics of the boat and a capsizing many times we got to go out and feel the rush of sailing in some amazing boats with one amazing view. After the week we got to go out and sail around near Alcatraz and around San Fransisco in larger boats with all the instructors. Great people and great fun! Surely a summer i’ll never forget!

I love how this center does this Free Open water event. It gives a lot of people the opportunity to try sailing in a large sailboat and dingy, kayaking and paddle boarding for free.
They even have a lunch setup for $ 4. A hamburger or hot dog with chips and a soda isn’t bad, The only other option is getting food near the winery for about $ 8 not including tax and tip for just a hamburger.

Can’t say enough about the TI Sailing Center. This amazing program is brilliantly run and managed, with quality instruction for kids of all ages. My 14 YO son did 2 weeks and a Saturday regatta.
The organization also does a wonderful service in raising funds to introduce sailing to kids from all over San Francisco. Do it.

It’s fun, friendly and easy to find, it has good parking and it’s nice place to learn about sailing for novices.

I went to the Treasure Island Sailing Center on Treasure Island for their Opening Day Sat 4÷24÷10.
Went to A.‘s place and carpooled on the Bay Bridge, Treasure Island is on the Left coming from the E. Bay. Turned on Calif. Ave to the TISC. Got FREE lunch ticket (suggested $ 5 donation) and then saw the crowd lined up. That’s to get on sign-​up sheets for sailing or kayaking.
By the time we go to the sign up sheet, earliest sailing was 12:45pm. We were they be 11:10am or so. We waited a bit, then got our lunch — garden burger, cheeseburger, hamburger or hotdog + chips + packaged cookies + drink.
We got on a big sailboat but there was very little wind. Just bobbling around in the Bay. Then we got off & waited for our chance to kayak. The open top kayak are more fun, the middle person doesn’t really have a seat & also doesn’t have to do much. That was my seat. I did paddle a bit. You do get wet in the kayak. Bring quick drying pants, hat, sunglasses & sandals.
It was an ok day. Worth it if you want to try a bit of kayaking or sailing for FREE. Bad: long lines because too many people want to do it. Four pit toilets were available nearby.

Great staff, good facility. It’s a super way to introduce your kids to sailing.

While a tad hard to find, the sailing center on Treasure Island is truly one of a kind. A few friends had purchased a used Vanguard over the weekend and decided not to take lessons right out but instead just teach themselves. Seeing this prime opportunity to watch them fall over into the cold bay a few times we couldn’t help but tag along. Sitting on the dock in the sun with a sandwich spread and beers while looking out at the new Bay Bridge construction, water everywhere and the training sailing teams is a real cheap treat.
I can’t comment on the quality of the instructors here but I can say that this is a underrated hang out. Plus if you have yachting friends or manage to flag down some yachting strangers, the dock is open and they can simply pick you up without messing with Marina fees and slips… now that’s what I call yacht rock!

Went with a group and got a beginner lesson and a few hours on the boats for only $ 20. Spend the first half on a small 10′ just sailing around the cove, then got into one of the bigger boats with the instructor and we really took off! We almost had the thing sideways into the water.
These guys are knowledgeable, friendly, and very eager to teach others about sailing. Afterwards they fired up the grill and we had a nice BBQ with them as well. Great day!

My son went to this sailing camp last year. It is remarkable but also pretty intense. MY son was not the best swimmer at that time, so it freaked me out to see him in the open water in a sailing boat with one other kid his age by themselves. The instructor insured me that it is hard to watch but you cannot baby them on the water. They need to know survival skills and need to be thrown into it. It was hard to watch but after three days my son was sailing by himself in the open bay and kayaking. He was so confident and did not carry that fear on his back that he previously had. The program is also relatively cheap. I think it is 150.00 a wk for half day and 250.00 a week for full day. We are enrolling again this summer. I highly recommend this summer camp. Your child will be a pro sailor by the end of the summer, guaranteed!

This place rules, from the super chill staff, to the laid back non intimidating atmosphere, this place is a killer locale for learning to sail (either adults or kids). My GF’s nephews enrolled and had a blast sailing here all summer.
