Tracy DeAmicis McMahan, MD

Can’t say enough about Dr. Tracy McMahan. We happened to choose her out of availability but looking back we couldn’t have been more happier with her.
She is very knowledgeable, always accommodating in case of last minute appointments. During our sessions with her, we found that she would constantly triage the baby while chatting with us. She wouldn’t waste a single minute on anything that didn’t seem important.
If she didn’t have solutions, she’d recommend a couple options; encourage us to use trial and error to see if something else could be an issue. Very personable and helpful.
Really miss her with us having moved out of SF. Wouldn’t hesitate to recommend her to anyone.

Unfortunately Dr McMahan has moved out of the Mt View area so she is no longer with PAMF. Bummer! Still love her and miss her.

The reviews I have read thus far are very polarized… people either love Dr. McMahan or they hate her! And it doesn’t make it any easier for others trying to get solid info about the doc. Well, here’s a more realistic review (let’s hope).
Knowledge: 5 Stars — Dr. McMahan is definitely on top of her game and knows her field very well. She always has informative answers and explanations to any questions that we ask. And, most important for any concerned parent, she is clear and concise about the facts without being cold. And that’s what all parents really want. Tell us what’s going on with her kids, how can we make it better, and the reassurance that everything is going to be fine!
Practice: 4 Stars — Dr. McMahan is a great pediatrician. She’s been my son’s doc since he was 3 months, and we added my newborn last year. She is always concise and gets right to business asking about age-​specific issues that our children may be experiencing. Often she’ll broach the exact topics I have questions about, which I believe, is a sign of good professionalism. She does tend to zip through the appointment, and I have on occasion felt like I was slowing her down with questions while her hand was already on the doorknob. Hence the 4 stars. In her defense, however, I am told that most routine doc appointments are scheduled to last 15 – 20 minutes. And if this is true, then I’d much rather have my doc trying to touch on lots of different issues quickly.
She is prompt about calling back and even scheduling a same-​day appointment if necessary. When my 3 month old got RSV, we took her in and within the hour Dr. McMahan had diagnosed our baby, called for Paramedics to transport us in an ambulance to the Lucille Packard Children’s hospital and explained everything I needed to know with an encouraging smile and lots of reassurance that it was all going to be fine!
Overall: 4.5 Stars out of 5 (Even though Unilocal doesn’t let us do half stars!). All I can say about getting used to her rapid pace is for you to jot down your questions/​concerns before the appointment and then just fire away at them once you are there. Chances are, as with me, she’ll already address most of your concerns before you even open your mouth!
Dr. McMahan is a great physician and if I have more kids I’ll be adding them to her practice! I highly recommend her!

Dr. McMahan is awesome! She’s been my son’s pediatrician since birth, and we absolutely adore her. She definitely speaks quickly and gets to the point, but that’s part of what we love. My son is always happy to see her, she relates very well with him, and always explains what she is doing when she examines him. We visited her upwards of 10 times in the first year between the regular visits, ear infections, and other health ailments (febrile seizure, bladder infection). She was always informative, reassuring, and made time to answer questions. You do need to be prepared, but come one, she’s a busy doctor with many patients. Don’t waste your doctor’s time by not knowing what you want to ask when you arrive!
And, in all of our visits, we’ve never waited more than 10 minutes beyond our appointment time, and that was only once! If you’re looking for a doctor with excellent training, great current info about best practices, and a very strong bedside manner, this is the doctor to see!

OK, now we have seen her a lot of times, feel little more comfortable, but must say she is still rushed, a little less or maybe we are getting used to it. Her subject knowledge about certain fields is limited. Overall smart, but not the best.

We’ve been with Dr. McMahan since we moved to the WestCoast and really love her. She gives so much info on how my son is doing and would call me back when I have questions. I was afraid that we will not find as good doctors as we had back East, but she proved me wrong.

So, the people that gave negative review for Dr. McMahan are living in a fantasy world. I admit she has faults such as not being able to walk on water or turn water into wine. As far as the sane expectations for any physician, she is awesome. I have two children who see Dr. McMahan, one is Autistic the other had some of GI issues the first year of life. She was exceedingly helpful and sensible in getting us through these things. When I felt my daughter was showing signs of Autism, she bent over backward to expedite all the necessary referrals for evaluation and steered us towards the best evaluators. Anyone one who says she speeds you thought he appointment to quickly is likely someone who requires a lot of coddling. She is not too speedy, just direct and efficient. I have never felt that could not ask her questions and frankly I am glad she gets right to the point. She is also very intelligent and wonderful with both of my children. She is very sensitive to the needs of my Autistic daughter. To me, you would want a pediatrician that is caring, sensible and intelligent. If you need some one to hold your hand and hug you, that is the job of a therapist, not your child’s pediatrician.
PS. She went to Johns Hopkins. I’m just sayin’.

After reading such good reviews, I was determined to have Dr McMahan for my little one before she was born. So before my delivery, after multiple calls, finally I was able to get appointment. Another factor was, since she was in the same hospital group and my obgyn was at the same place. But it didn’t turn out at all the way I expected.
First, when my daughter was born, she didn’t come for a visit which was not the case with other pediatricians. Even on-​call doctor wasn’t sure why she hasn’t visited the baby yet. My obgyn gave me special visit just to check on me. I was expecting the same from Dr McMahan but she didn’t come. So we had to schedule another appointment in 2 days once I was discharged from the hospital.
So remember, it was my first baby, I was just out of hospital, still in pain and my baby was still pretty new to the world. With a list of questions, we went for our first appointment. After a long wait even after appointment, we got to see Dr McMahan.
She came and started talking. It was like a session where there is not much room for questions. She only asked the questions in which she was interested. My daughter was undressed and I was having a hard time in keeping my focus on her quick info session and wrapping my daughter in blanket. By the time, my daughter and me were a little comfortable, Dr McMahan session was over and she waved a bye. I had no time to look at my list.
I knew I need a change and what a relief to have a pediatrician who actually has time to listen to you. My one month visit was totally different.

I don’t understand all the positive comments for this doctor. I’ve never seen a doctor as impatient and rushed as Dr. McMahan and she genuinely terrified my 3 yr old. Not gentle, and not knowledgeable.
My daughter had an ear infection and was a little shy and when asked to open up and say «ah» she didn’t say it loud enough. After only two tries Dr. McMahan went straight for the tongue depressor and stuck it into my daughter’s mouth with no warning, making her pull back and flinch. Being startled, she began to cry. As I was trying to calm her down and explain that she needs to say «ah» louder, Dr. McMahan was already forcing her to lay down for her ear examination. Seriously lady, what is the rush?
She quickly declared that there was too much ear wax and started digging, asking me to hold her down. My daughter was hysterical at this point and really screaming in pain. Only after she stopped digging and my daughter vomited, she said there was something she can put in the ear to dissolve the wax. She threw some lollipops and stickers at my daughter, never once making eye contact, and rushed out, sending the nurse in to administer the ear drops. We didn’t even have a chance to ask a question.
I’m sure she’s very capable and will call you back and get you that appointment or whatever, but what a brute.

Dr. McMahan is wonderful and I will miss her so much (she is moving from SF down the penisula). From before my baby was born she answered my questions. She would call back the same day I called and even called me on a Monday morning to follow up when I called the after hours support over the weekend. She is great with my son (now 6 months old) and has been so helpful with guiding me a first time mom through developmental mile stones and the general fears and hopes of being a new parent. I will really miss her.

Dr. McMahan has been our child’s pediatrician since birth. She has always been a wonderful resource, patient with children, caring, loving… no words can fully express what my family thinks of her. I was sad to hear that she will be leaving Dr. Fukuda’s practice as of March 2009 to join a new practice in Mountain View (moving due to her husband’s new job — commute was too long). However, my husband and I are both considering moving out of the City within the next few years and the Mountain View vicinity is one of our possibilities.

Dr. McMahan is a good doctor.

I can’t imagine being able to find a better pediatrician. She’s very gentle with our baby and loads me up with tons of information at each visit. Sometimes she speaks quickly and I feel rushed and I forget a question. But she’s thorough and nice and I know our baby is in good hands.

dr. mcmahan is fabulous.
being a first-​time mom is terrifying enough, and it’s great to have a pediatrician who:
a) seems to genuinely care about your kid
b) doesn’t look at you like a moron when she mentions rice cereal for babies and you ask, «you mean like rice krispies?»
c) always calls you back to answer your questions, no matter how stupid they are
d) is straightforward but still warm and friendly
e) has little kids of her own and truly understands what it’s like to function without sleep and worry about everything.
my 1-​year-​old son had to go to the ER this weekend (everything’s fine — 3 hour visit for a paper cut) and she called this morning unsolicited to make sure he was okay.
it’s things like this that make me recommend dr. mcmahan to every new mom i meet. a little advice: she is quite popular, so if you’re expecting, i’d call a few months before your due date if you’d like her to be your little guy’s doctor. it’ll be worth the call.

Dr. McMahan is so awesome. She’s thorough, patient, responsive, and so energetic each and every time we see her. We’ve been going to her for the past year and at each appointment she never rushes through the meetings. She listens to each and every concern that new parents have no matter how small and gives great advice. Dr. McMahan really cares about her patients and it shows at each meeting and each time she returns our calls promptly. Can’t say enough good things about her.
As of March 2009 Dr. McMahan will be practicing in Mountain View. We will miss her a lot.

She is fantastic! Another pediatrician that we know personally recommended Dr. McMahan. She gave birth to her own baby about a month after our daughter was born. I loved the fact that she has personal experience with her own children and can speak from experience rather than just theory. She was very good with our little girl. We had a bit of trouble with the insurance company which is the only reason that we’re no longer with her practice. (They dropped UHC for a few months which means that we would have had to pay out of network. They went back to UHC a month or two later but we found another pediatrician by then.) I highly recommend Tracy!

My twins love her! She’s a great doctor. Talks to you like a person, calls you back when you have a question and isn’t judgemental. She was recommended to me by a friend and i have been very happy with her.

Saw me and my newborn in the hospital at CPMC. A great hands-​on MD. Went above and beyond. When she saw I was in tears about breastfeeding, she personally hunted down the lactation consultant and made sure I was seen within the hour. Then she helped me get the pediatrician I wanted for my daughter after my insurance screwed me up for an appointment the very next day.
Trained at Hopkins med school and UCSF for residency. Top training! Smart!
