The Marsh’s Mock Cafe

Nothing makes me sadder than unfunny comics. Even worse… unfunny comics failing badly and knowing it.
Some guy accosted my group after dinner at We Be Sushi.
«fun times» he said
«support the arts» he said
«it’s free and you can bring booze» he said.
We went down the block, bought some hooch, crossed the street and went to the Marsh.
Even with the alcohol, it wasn’t funny.

I reserve the right to change star rating if I ever get suckered into coming here again and the talent is good. Or if they get rid of the pillar that destroys the sight lines.

For $ 5 dollars you get a night of entertaining comedy, albeit, haphazardly put together. I believe this is the place where comedians try out their new materials. It starts at 10-​ish every Saturday night.

Staff is friendly and fun.
Quiet place to do what you do in a coffee shop (read a book, talk with friends, chill with locals, do some work and of course drink coffee or if you’re like me fruity green tea, hey it is SF, innit)
Clean toilet (mucho importante por mi) and assortment of different quality teas puts it over the top.
Yes its not hip, cool nor trendy but you also don’t have to dress up and buy a mac to fit in. (no dissin’ Ritual)

Unilocal, if only you had less than one star. Alas, one will have to do.
I was convinced to go to The Mock last night. I was convinced to part with many more dollars than I should’ve for what I saw.
And what was that?
Juvenile would-​be comedians snickering about — what? I don’t know. One after the other, they got up on stage, boasting about having no material, lambasting the audience for not laughing about said lack of material. They pulled a move I consider cheap — trying to use the audience for laughs. Wasn’t flying.
If this were a free show, it might’ve justified the price of admission. As it was, I feel a sneer … and a seven-​dollar hole in my wallet. Not funny at all.

A great show for $ 7, and a triple-​whammy date impression opportunity.
The 90 minute show at the The Mock was great, absolutely as good as anything you’d see at say Cobbs and unlike 50 Mason (not a bad club, by the way) the audience was into it, not tourists looking for a San Francisco experience.
Lots of mission restaurants surround it, and customers are more than welcome to bring in the tasty beverage of their choice. The theater itself is a bit on the rundown and falling apart side, which gets me to the uses of this place as a triple-​whammy date impression builder.
I figure if you are dating the Conspicuous Consumption 8 digit net worth prince (ss) this place can show your ability to pick fine art from decayed and desolate surroundings while emphasizing just how little you feel the need to impress anyone, particularly your date. Plus its only $ 7. If you are doing the starving student/artist/PH.D. thing, The Mock shows just how great you are at finding value. Plus its only $ 7. And if neither of these apply its still a great show. Plus its only $ 7.
Because the place does have a pillar in the middle there are definitly better and worse seats. The theater tends to show up right at show time so get there 10 – 15 minutes early to snag a couch right up front. Its a great show. And have I mentioned its only $ 7?
