The Hound Clothiers

On Sutter Street between Union Square and the Financial District, this is simply the best men’s clothing shop in town. The selection is outstanding. They have both a Talbot’s Menswear and Peter Millar shop within the store, custom made shirts and custom suits/​sports jackets from Samuelson and others, and most importantly, the level of service and tailoring especially is the best in San Francisco. So for size, selection, service and personal attention, The Hound is the place to go.

Stopped into today to browse this classic men’s store and found out that the shop is going to have a fun event tomorrow:
A coffee pour-​over pop-​up from Highnote Coffee Co. from 9:30am — 12:30pm.
The local coffee roaster that is coming has been selling his products at the Palo Alto & Woodside farmers markets and the beans are from his family farm in Honduras.
I like supporting local businesses and it’s really cool that the Hound is having this treat for folks coming to the store. Can’t wait!

Unfortunately, I had a very poor experience with their customer service. I picked up a fairly pricey dress shirt here but it was in the wrong size. I tried to swap to a more appropriate size but I was told I couldn’t do that because it was out of the wrapping; the shirt was still in mint condition as I was wearing for less than 15 min due to the poor fit. After pleading that the shirt is useless with its poor fit, the best they could do was give me half off a new shirt. The original shirt was almost 300 including tax so this was an absurd proposition. I ended up donating the shirt when I returned home.
Given I work in the financial district, I’m surprised they were willing to forgo a long term customer for a very short term gain. Would be surprised if this business stays
around with this poor customer service relative to all the other options in the area.

It used to be a place where exceptional clothes met exceptional customer service. Sorry to say those days appear to be gone. Just had a 3-​plus week wait for an item that was expected in 10 days, with no call or heads-​up, and no knowledge of when it would arrive. Good luck with the business plan.

Undergoing a remodel at the time I visited, so it was a bit cramped, but for a shopper, not a problem. Staff was very friendly and helpful. If you’re a preppy guy, it’s the perfect shop for you in SFO. Carries great brands like Barbour, Peter Millar, etc. Would definitely go back when in the area.

Oustanding service and very good selection of traditional menswear. There is plenty of good stuff here from Bill’s Khakis, to Robert Talbott ties, to Barbour jackets, and Samuelsohn suits.
The salesmen, especially Winslow, are very attentive and know their products very well. This is a terrific store to browse or to buy.

This place is a special place for more traditional brands. I went there because of a certain Barbour jacket. Mr Mike Blunden was helping me and he was very helpful and knowledgeable.
So if you are into gentlemen’s clothing — go there!

I have been a customer here for a few years, including buying a made-​to-​measure sport coat and suit post-​college. In both instances, the clerk was very patient as I waded through fabric swatches, even insisting at one point that I take my two favorites outside to see how they looked in the sunlight.
The style here is obviously for a bit of an older crowd, since 20-​somethings who wear nothing but Barbour and Smathers & Branson belong to a different coast, but the service and quality of clothing is consistent.

Even since I was a little girl, I’ve dreamed of being from the manor born. However, I cannot change my lineage to that of the Dowager Countess of Grantham but I can sure dress like I’m mucking about in the country side like Lady Sybil.

Great selection of Barbour clothing that you spy through the windows on Sutter Street. Women’s and men’s clothing! The staff are very helpful, nice and there are even some great seasonal sales here. Love it.

Nothing but good things to say about this place.
The truth is, men will go into this place only if they have matured to the point of knowing not to by the name on the label, but rather something that will fit you well (Most «designer» labels are just that, royalties paid to the designer to slap their name on a poorly fused suit label).
This place is the only real Samuelsohn dealer in San Francisco. Get great quality, fully-​canvassed. made-​to-​measure suits at a great price ($ 1.2k and up, depending on fabric). Would cost probably $ 3k and up at a department store for a «designer» label. Go during the trunk shows and get 20% off. This is the best you can do without going full bespoke.
Walt and Mike are great guys who never give the hard-​sell and will work around what you want. Elegant features such as working button holes, horn buttons, they’ll let you know every caveat to making a perfect suit. I believe Walt said that he has has his shop in Union Square since the 70s (I forgot exactly), and it isn’t hard to understand why. I’ve bought two suits so far from them and intend to buy more in the future.

This boutique is basically like shopping in Cape Cod, Boston, or Coastal areas of the NE. If that is your style and take, then this is your place. Great selection of preppy shirts, pants, and seasonal jackets.
The best part of the store is their service. which is just tremendous, and their custom suits. I have two custom suits make here, and the tailoring was fabulous as was the selection of «cloths’.
The store can be a bit overpriced relative to finding the same brands and styles on-​line at 30−40% off (all the time!).

FANTASTIC Barbour collection! They might also have the largest section of Bill’s Khakis I’ve ever seen. They even carry their jackets — in Gore-​Tex, I might add.
Winslow was an excellent salesman and showed me around the store and really got a feeling for what I liked and didn’t like.
They have a tailor right on sight so you can buy your Bill’s Khakis and get them hemmed right there that day. They’re also smart enough to order Smathers & Branson belts in large sizes and then trim them to fit you. This keeps them from being stuck with 14 belts in size 30. GENIUS!
This is a MUST STOP if you’re a guy and into clothes.

The staff at this store are the best. I needed some clothing as gifts and I needed them altered fast. They performed as requested. In time and perfect. The quality is beyond reproach and the attitudes of the staff are fantastic. I highly recommend this business and will be in their debt for a long time.
I read a review by Richard S and asked the staff about it. Seems its from 2008. What wasn’t mentioned is that he received A FULL REFUND. Some people are just incapable of compliments.

Great selection of brands you see rarely in department stores. They carry Bill’s Khakis (made in US), lots of Barbour coats and a good selection of colorful Italian socks (in both large and small sizes — just look behind the case!). Leon, the salesperson who helps me, remembers customers and understands your needs well. I think the styles skew towards traditional rather than trendy, but if you are interested in getting a classic look with the original brands, as opposed to reproductions sold at some chain stores like Banana Republic, this is a good place to visit. If they don’t have your size, they were able to order during their trunk shows as well and can be made to measue.

What the Hound does best: classic, english gentleman’s clothing and accessories. This is a key component of my own personal style, so I very much appreciate the selection of goods at the Hound.
Unfortunately, this store is catering to a very specific clientele. Being situated so close to Fidi, the smallest size carried in all the beautiful shirts and sweaters is at least two sizes too big for me. Additionally, it is easy to see that the staff doesn’t take a young, non-​business suit clad individual very serious.
So basically, if you’re bigger guy and look like you’ve got lots of money, you’ll probably have the time of your life here (if you like the style.) Otherwise you’re left to buy accessories and receive service that’s mediocre at best.

This store is aptly named because the sales guys here will hound you as you look around. When I was here, the sales guy literally followed me around the entire shop while I looked at various items of clothing.
This can be good if you want a personal shopper but bad if you just want to browse around.
I’m glad this store exists though because they carry lines that are difficult if not impossible to find elsewhere locally. Prices are pretty high though and the overall style tends to be on the conservative side rather than hip.

This is a beautiful store, selling timeless quality clothing. I’ve shopped here several times, mainly coming back for their nice selection of Marcoliani-​socks. The big drawback with The Hound is the staff and their attitude. Don’t get me wrong. There is an overwhelming amount of service here, but it’s just completely ungenuine and pushy — to the point of being ridiculous.

If you’re in San Francisco but want to dress as if you’re summering in Nantucket, this is the store for you.
As others have said, this store has a great selection of Bill’s Khaki’s, Vineyard Vines clothing and ties, Smathers and Branson needlepoint belts, Reyn Spooner hawaiian shirts and Barbour jackets.
The only thing I dislike is that no matter what the salesman told me, I know that all of these brands are available online for prices much less than MSRP.
Overall though, it’s a nice store to find if you like preppy styles.

Quality + Exceptional Service = Great Value
I’m a huge fan of The Hound for carrying some of the finest knits in the city, brands like Barbour that fit my frame perfectly. Huge selection of shirts, pants and jackets, all with classic never got out of style cuts. Service is exceptional with sales people going out of their way to be accommodating.
