An illegal gambling den and brothel in the Mission District that has been the site of a shooting and multiple calls to the police in the past few months is seemingly immune to closure despite frequent raids from law enforcement.
«The police have been here six times, and they come in and take the liquor, but [the people] get let go,» said Manny Torres, the owner of the Coco Frio restaurant two doors down. Torres said two of his dishwashers frequent the club — which he described as «basically a bunch of guys gambling away their paychecks» — and have been arrested by the police only to be released the next day.
«Every night there’s a party, every night they get arrested, and the next morning they get let go,» he said, saying that twice he has gone out to smoke a cigarette behind his restaurant only to find police armed with shotguns conducting a raid on the club and telling him to go back inside.
The club, located at 2949 Mission St., is the most active between 2 a. m and 5 a.m., Torres said, but will stay open until people leave, sometimes through the late morning. Employees of nearby businesses described carts of alcohol being brought in and empty bottles heaved out, with groups of up to 10 people entering the club at once.
But it’s not just a gambling den, Torres and others say. Some report prostitution at the illicit venue as well.
«It’s basically a whorehouse, a bar, and a gambling casino,» Torres said.

What an incredible store. The décor must’ve been done by a genius. The intelligent and quirky design is paralleled only by the vast array of unique sodas. You must try their in house sodas, specifically the chai cola and the mate mojito. All is wonderful! Don’t forget to look for that nostalgic soda from your tween years, I bet they’ve got it. Lastly, the owner Taylor is just such a doll. Their store is bliss.

Fucking genius! You guys are the epitome of entrepreneurs” brilliant idea to have a soda shop here in SF. Went here yesterday for the first time and had the greatest experience. A huge selection of bottle soda and root beers. Ok so here is the cool thing they have a huge section of diet sodas too. They don’t leave anyone out. Very cool vintage look to the shop with lots to see and taste. Pop of all flavors available. White truffle and Parmesan popcorn mmmmm. Awesome guest log book at the door, old soda commercials out of an old school quarter play booth. A 4 pack of specialty sodas for $ 4 and a free piece of taffy for each soda bought. You guys are geniuses and I will be back for sure!!! From what I hear awesome ice cream coming soon.

I’m a sucker for sweet drinks so The Fizzary is the perfect place for me. I love that they have an entire section devoted to ginger beer, my first choice when it comes to carbonated beverages. The woman who runs the store is extremely friendly and helped point me in the direction of some new brands of ginger beer I’d never heard of before. Trying to keep an open mind, I also bought a few other drinks that were recommended to me and ended up falling hard for the Chai Cola. For every drink you buy, you get a free salt water taffy :) What a fun place!

Cool spot!

I’ve been in this store a couple of times but never got anythinf or really payed super close attention. This time I had a bit more time so I took a look and bought 5 drinks — lemon lime, root beers, orange soda, and ginger ale. This place has TONS of variety and a lot of different brands of root beer. I got a few for the hubs who has tried 3 of the 5 drinks so far and really enjoyed them. He especially liked the mandarin orange soda. Also for each drink, you get a free salt water taffy which there are quite a few flavors to choose from. They also sell other candies as well that are more unique

A one of a kind experience with expert service and suggestions! Come and have a look at obscure and unique soda’s. If you feel overwhelmed, just ask for suggestions — they are very friendly and helpful!

This is such a cool little shop with all the varieties and flavours of soda pop you can imagine.
The people working inside are quite knowledgeable as well, so you can tell them what you’re looking for in a drink and they can give suggestions. I recognize some brand names, but it seems like most are small and independent companies.
One of the handy things they have is a quick-​chiller that can get the room-​temperature pop you just picked up off the shelf down to 40 °F in 5 minutes.
I’ll definitely be back to try some more kinds.

Focused mostly on unusual, hard-​to-​find soda, with some old school candy thrown into the mix. For some reason I was expecting more soda shop, less shelves lined with bottles (only) of soda. I also expected a homemade, Fizzary brew or two in the mix. Which I’ve found at every shop similar to this in Canada, even if it’s just them adding ice cream to a favorite for take-​away.
Unlike other Unilocal reviews, I wasn’t offered any freebies (a candy, or buy three get one free… I bought three bottles). Also wasn’t offered a bag or 6-​pack holder, which would have made carrying so much easier, and would’ve bought more, too.
So, did I like it? Sure. It’s fun, and unusual. Will I return? Likely not.

Super awesome old fashion soda & candy shop that is reasonably priced!
You can’t find every soda you can ever imagine but I’m pretty sure you could find any kind of soda you can imagine here.

I like soda. But only non-​corn syrup sodas, so I never drink the mass-​produced sodas available in every grocery store (you know what I’m talking about), and I rarely buy any natural sodas to drink at home. Sometimes I do crave a good natural soda like I get at restaurants when I’m at home, though.
Although The Fizzary has been in the Mission for about two years, I just learned about the store recently. I checked out their soda list on the website (which is really extensive — like, really extensive), and that motivated me to go there and check it out the very next day. (OK, I was drooling a bit on my laptop when I was scrolling through the list)
The store itself is simple and clean with an old-​timey feel. The hundreds of sodas to choose from are neatly arranged on shelves in sections by flavor. There are sections for root beer, cola, ginger ale, lemon-​lime, fruit flavors, imports, and my favorite «unclassifiable».
The guy working there was really nice and helpful, and when I asked how it works he said I could fill as many cardboard fold-​out four packs as I wanted and bring them up to the counter. I was expecting the prices to be kind of high since it’s a specialty store, but it’s $ 2 a bottle across the board (with a few limited exceptions) and it’s buy three get one free (so $ 6 for a four pack, not bad!!)
I could’ve walked out of there easily with 24 bottles of soda, but since I was taking MUNI back home I thought it would be a better idea to start with a lighter load of eight and then go back and restock up on flavors I liked and try new ones. I ended up with nine different flavors, including sasparilla, peach, orange cream, Japanese plum-​flavored Ra-​Mu-​Né, chocolate (!!), and something called Swamp Juice.
It was nice to be able to browse the tons of varieties they had without being too concerned about the ingredients. I did see one soda made from corn syrup, but everything else was cane sugar (or not corn syrup based). There was one soda on their list that wasn’t in stock, the Squamscot maple cream, so I was a little disappointed because I wanted to try that one; but they have so much to choose from, and I understand it’s impossible to keep a list that long up to the minute on stock levels. Did I mention I found a chocolate soda? That made up for the maple cream that was out of stock.
With the low prices and excellent selection of non-​mass-​produced sodas I can see how this place can become addictive. I know I’ll be going back soon to get more bottles of favorites and to discover new flavors.
[I hate to get passive-​aggressive in a Unilocal review, but I have to say something about a recent two-​star review. She gave the Fizzary two stars solely because she didn’t like the flavors of soda she bought. What the!!! Seriously? That’s like giving Safeway one star because you didn’t like the Pringles you bought there or whatever. If you’re not intelligent enough to understand the concept of Unilocal and properly reviewing businesses then save your opinions for your friends on Facebook. That includes blaming a business because you couldn’t find parking.]

Sweet nostalgia…
Think big wheels, hoola hoops and skateboarding at break neck speeds and as soon as you got home, you couldn’t wait to bust open your candy loot.
A charming Willy Wonka-​esque vibe.

Such a great and unique concept. I’ve never been into a place like this but I loved how it was set up so you could easily peruse the numerous amounts of sodas they had. We picked up a few random bottles (ginger, pineapple (yep) and grape which was incredible).
If you’re a soda fan or just into unique spots you need to check out the Fizzary.

Meh. Yeah, the selection of sodas is cool, but the two that we got to try tasted awful. And by awful I mean we each took two sips and threw the soda away. The parking is VERY hard to find.
The only reason this place gets an extra star is because of the German chocolates that they sell there, those were VERY good. Milk Chocolate+Cacao Bits and Milk Chocolate+Banana Crisps. Oh, the lady behind the counter was very nice too.
The champagne cooler is cool and it did cool our sodas pretty fast, however, we decided to try them later after keeping them in the fridge for a little longer, just in case, so I don’t know if the cooler did a good job, but the bottles were cold to the touch

This place is awesome they have a million kinds of soda. I wish they woulda had a coconut flavored soda but I took the associates recommendation and got the Joia Coconut, Pineapple, Nutmeg soda. Omg. Just trust me. Omg.
We also got some Guarana from a company we’d never tried before and it was really good. We got a few others as well that we haven’t cracked open yet. I also wish their import section was a little larger. But still, 5 star spot.

A friend kept telling us to try out this place. We were both leery because we thought it was a soda fountain place… wherein they made their own colas, etc. Our experiences with that were not that great. So we waited a few months but we finally went.
We were pleasantly surprised by the variety of BOTTLED sodas! And some old-​school boxes and bars of candies!
Service = friendly. The clerk tried to describe some of the drinks to us… I wanted to try the sarsaparilla soda but he said it was very close to licorice… so I stuck with root beer.
Prices = awesome. 4 bottles for $ 6.00!!! WHOA. KEWL! Candy… Lemonheads were 4/​$ 1.00. Woohoo.
Overall, I’ll stop back in here for a cold one (when their quick chill fridge works again… ;))

The Fizzary is a really fun store for kids, soda connoisseurs, or anyone who’s trying to track down a long-​lost beverage of their youth. It’s not huge, but you’ll be amazed at the sheer variety and selection of flavors and regional brands they carry.
The storefront has a great painted sign, and inside it’s all hardwood floors, pressed tin ceilings, and old-​tymey wooden display shelves showing off their sodas. The stock is arranged by flavor, which can be helpful as far as some of the more obscure sodas that don’t have descriptions on the label. They also have a very cool super-​fast drink chiller, shaped like a big barrel, that will make any bottle on the shelf deliciously cold in just a few minutes!
Pricing is straightforward — $ 2/​bottle, or $ 6 for a mix-​n-​match 4-​pack, or $ 16 for a 12-​pack mix-​n-​match. It’s easy to get carried away by all the choices, especially if you’re a visitor who can’t carry glass bottles back home in your carry-​on, so be ready to drink a LOT of soda, is all I’m saying. Oh, and they also carry salt-​water taffy sold by weight, and you get a free piece of candy with each bottle purchased.
Oh, and they have a nice selection of super-​strong ginger beers, so if you’re looking for fancy mixers for craft cocktails, this would be a good place to start!

Yes, I went and looked over rows of sugary drinks and bins of brightly colored candy.
And yes we chatted with the nice, helpful guy at the counter who was rockin’ an old school bow tie and pageboy cap.
And yes I taste tested a refreshing Maine Root Lemon Lime soda and of course I had to accept a freebie piece of salt water taffy.
It’s a tough job, but somebody’s gotta do it. (Who loves ya?)

Soda fanatics now have a new place to satisfy their cravings. The Fizzary (cool name!) opened 2 weeks ago. It’s located just a few steps away from Mission Pie, on Mission @25^th street.
This new «Soda Pop and Candy Shop» stocks more than 800 types of bottled sodas from around the world, and more than a dozen nostalgic candies, like saltwater taffy, Whirly Pops jumbo swirl lollipops, candy sticks, Necco wafers, etc.
But don’t mistake this place for just a grocery store. Soon they’ll debut a music/​party venue space in the back, that is twice the size of the retail space.
The most interesting part of this place are the future plans of the owners (Taylor’s Tonics, small SF maker of botanical sodas). In the works are: a soda tap counter, a beverage museum, and a craft beverage incubator space for the home brewmasters (so u can make your own brand of sodas. How cool is that!). They hope to launch a Kickstarter campaign to fund those projects. Add your name to the mailing list to keep updated about it.
Almost forgot, the sodas are $ 2 per bottle.
