Susan Lewis, MD

Dr. Lewis is the absolute best if you need surgery for a meniscus tear. There is no one better. She has done 2 of these on my right knee (I did tear it again a couple of years after the first surgery) and one on my left knee, and all 3 times I had no post-​op pain whatsoever! All my other friends who have had this surgery by other people say that recovery was a slow and painful process. They did not have Dr. Lewis. She is a total artist! This makes up for the fact that she seems to be in a hurry when you visit her. If you have a meniscus tear, she is the doctor to see.

She comes with great recommendations but unfortunately I would not go back to see Dr. Lewis. Billing is a nightmare (mostly as a function of the hospital system and the doctor’s inept billing company), I hardly spent any time with the doctor in any sort of evaluation, I was told that my knee MRI wasn’t even «fully read» — only half of it was available when the doctor looked at it, despite the fact that it was done downstairs in the same building and cost me over $ 2,000.
After all the bureaucratic hassle and time spent in and out of the hospital to see Dr. Lewis, six months later my knee is in exactly the same condition as it was before. Sure, these things are hit or miss but my experience was definitely a miss.

First of all, do not go to hospitals for primary care. There is no good reason to pay a hospital facility fee on top of care.
Second of all, after filling out a bunch of extra forms (because it’s a hospital), and waiting for an hour (because it’s a hospital), Dr. Lewis quickly inspected my knee and told me I needed an MRI. That was the last of our contact, until she called me later to ask if I had gotten the MRI.
This visit cost $ 585, including Dr. Lewis’ fee and the hospital facility fee. Don’t do it.

I saw Dr. Lewis for a shoulder injury that has vexed me for nearly a decade. I have tried many other doctors and PTs in the Bay Area over the years. Dr. Lewis was meticulous and thorough in her examination, including ordering an MRI before recommending a path to treatment. She combined medication and PT in a manner that gave me 95% mobility in less than 30 days. She is a miracle worker! The Physical Therapy group is located adjacent to her office so a single visit gets you the MD review and PT in one location. The quality of the PT practice is superb. I have never had a better result in a shorter period of time. I highly recommend her for sports injuries.

Not only was I left waiting for Dr. Lewis for 30 minutes, she wasn’t much help at all. She spent less than 10 minutes with me, diagnosed me with bursitis and possible herniated disc (although she couldn’t verify it) and sent me to PT. PT hasn’t been able to resolve the problem so I went to my GP who said I definitely didn’t have a herniated disc and referred me to a good PT. On top of the wasted time, Dr. Lewis never informed me that she was affiliated with the hospital and that I’d have to pay $ 130 for the pointless 10 minutes with her. Such a disappointing experience.

After discovering St. Francis/​Dr. Lewis via Unilocal reviews, I visited her for consultations four times over a period of ~eight months. The first appointment took two weeks to schedule, but subsequent return visits have been easier to make, likely because new patients are allocated 30 (?) minutes versus the 15 (?) minutes for returnees.
I found Dr. Lewis rather hurried during the visit, but nonetheless I could sense her experience with athletes and athletic ailments from the specificity of her questions and examination. She quickly ruled out more serious issues and came about a diagnosis, then issued physical therapy modalities for treatment. Dr. Lewis personally led me to the neighboring PT department and introduced me to the staff there.
I visited Dr. Lewis for the same ailment (s) in the following months during the slow recovery process, but experienced similarly hurried consultations each time. After the third visit, I became dismayed with the briefness of each consultation (interpreting it as a lacking in quality of care), so ultimately visited other physicians instead.
Relative to other specialists seen, I am grateful for Dr. Lewis’ experience as well as conservative treatment methods. Unfortunately, these characteristics must go hand in hand with courteous and patient bedside manner, and this was not the case with Dr Lewis.

Where can you go to a sport medicine Dr. and know right off the bat that you have something wrong with your knee.
Will folks, let me tell you that Dr. Susan Lewis is the bomb. She came in and immediately knew that there was something wrong with my knee. Just went in there thinking something minor but nooooo, she wanted me to have an MRI that day and a couple of days later she informs me that I need knee surgery. She knows her stuff and always so optimistic.
Surgery was a success and I couldn’t have been happier. Thank you Dr. Lewis. I have recommended you to my friends and colleague.
