So just what does «Sui Generis» mean, anyway? It’s a question we’ve received many times over the years. A Latin expression meaning «unique; of its own kind,» Sui Generis is more than just our namesake, it’s a philosophy that informs everything we do. Like a gallery of fine art or rare book store, our meticulously curated consignment stores are the result of discerning eyes, hearts, and minds. Miguel and Gabriel, owners and founders of Sui Generis Inc., humbly set out nearly 10 years ago with a passion for clothing and a desire to create a secondhand retail shopping experience the likes of which San Francisco had never before seen. Since then, the Sui Generis brand has ascended to wild heights, much like the Pegasus that has come to serve as our mascot of sorts, with 2 menswear stores in the Castro and a women’s location in Cow Hollow. 2006: Miguel and Gabriel launch the first incarnation of Sui Generis at 218 Church Street. The store gains a steady reputation for its expertly in vintage garments and became a fixture in San Francisco fashion

It wasn’t long until Miguel and Gabriel moved to the US. Miguel started out at MaxMara, quickly jumping up through the company, and then being snapped up by Ralph Lauren in 2002 where he became their Senior Sales Professional in the downtown San Francisco store. After a good 7 years at Ralph Lauren is was time to turn his focus onto Sui Generis.
