History
Established in 1893.
A man-made lake completed in 1893, Stow Lake has been a part of San Francisco and Golden Gate Park for more than 11 decades. During this time, it has provided the people of San Francisco with a nearby place to escape from their crowded neighborhoods and homes, and enjoy the outdoors.
Enjoy the sights around the lake such as the Stone Rustic Bridge built the same year as the lake, the Golden Gate Pavilion (Chinese Pagoda) presented to San Francisco from Taipei in 1976, and Huntington Waterfalls that cascades down 110-feet from the reservoir located on Strawberry Hill.
Access Strawberry Hill from the Stone Bridge or the Roman bridge to get different views of the lake and city. The earthquake destroyed the Observation Tower on Strawberry Hill and the original Boathouse but was replaced by the new, current boathouse in 1946.
