Squat and Gobble Cafe & Crepery

Very good omelets, eggs not tough. My NorCal had a lot of veggies as you can see in the cross-​section, loved it, but could have had more chicken apple sausage… just a better balance would have been nice. Some might say it was lacking seasoning (like me 1 year ago) but I enjoyed its fresh taste. I watch my sodium intake so being able to add if I want to, is nice. Opted for a salad, which is very delicious. Good, quick service, will be back for am grub.

One of our favorite spots in town. Love the crepes, eggs benedicts, and now with their expanded menu, a large bowl of shrimp noodle soup in a Thai like coconut broth! Yummy!

If you can go to any other Squat & Gobble in San Francisco, you’re doing yourself a favor! Super busy place and it feels like a fast food restaurant! If I could put 0 stars. I would!

This place is good if you need food fast. I had Crab Cake Benedict. It is okay, the sauce is cold and the poached eggs are hard, no running yolk The cake is not freshly made. Overall, the atmosphere is nice on a Saturday morning to see people going by on Market Street.

I stopped and ate here today kinda out of the blue because it looked great while I was walking by. The prices are a little step for the portion you’re given, but the food is on point. What motivated me to write this review is the view. Located at the corner of 16^th and Market you have a phenomenal view from the patio of the old trolleys cruising by every few minutes and let’s you flash back to what it may have been like 20 years ago.

Fresh ingredients and ample choices to choose from such as salads, crepes, sandwiches, breakfast, and happy hour all in one central location. Service is great and this place is kid friendly which is a bonus for parents. Note there’s no koala care station so not for infants and toddlers.

The atmosphere is great. So is the service. The foods are a bit expensive though.

I randomly walked in here after climbing up and down to Twin Peaks and was very happy I did. I had a strawberry and nutella crêpe and an iced chai tea latte. First of all, the crêpe was made with angels I swear because it tasted like heaven in my mouth. The right amount of strawberries, nutella, and thin pancake in my mouth. The iced chai tea latte was not too sweet, it was just right. I’m so sad I was only just visiting and they don’t have this anywhere else!
Y’all definitely have to try it! I can’t speak for much on their menu, but their crêpe’s and chai tea was spot on.

This is a really cute place for breakfast and brunch in the Castro. I got the Eggs Florentine and an iced soy latte. The eggs were average — a little overcooked and not poached very well. But the redeeming part of this meal was definitely the rosemary potatoes and soy latte. I don’t usually like potatoes as a side to my brunch, but these rosemary ones were great. Honestly, I would be very okay with getting the rosemary potatoes as a meal. The latte had a great espresso to milk ratio — highly appreciated considering a lot of coffee places you go to give you 99% milk, 1% espresso.
Shout out to the guy who took my friend’s order discussing girth and length using the order numbers as a metaphor! A quintessential experience in the Castro on a Saturday morning to say the least. I was not complaining at all.

Cozy restaurant with plenty of outdoor seating and tables by the window to enjoy people watching. Order at the counter and they bring the food to you. Great variety of breakfast and lunch options. My husband loved his crabcake eggs benedict on an english muffin with rosemary potatoes. Perfect poached eggs with yummy hollandaise sauce. The crabcakes had lots of crab meat. I tried the Italian crêpe with Italian sausage, onions, mushrooms, and cheese with rosemary potatoes. Delicious and very filling! Fast and friendly service, great food.

Excellent food with a huge menu.
I really like the staff; Tyler, Freddy and all are a great crew who really treat their guests well and make them feel welcomed.

Great location to people watch.

The food was excellent: perfect brunch option if you like omelettes. The servings are generous, and the vibe was clean and healthy. There is an outside area where people could eat with their dogs.
However, the service was nonexistent. We were sitting outside and our water never came, although we ordered it, and no one came to check in at all. It was busy… but really?

I really want to love this place. I do. Cool people I know love to come here, it’s in an absolutely prime location regarding both convenience and people watching. The menu is super diverse so there’s something on there for everyone. It has all the right components yet… somehow… doesn’t really work.
Service is super hit and miss. I’ve gone in when it was FREEZING cold outside and they try to seat us right by the front door that keeps opening and closing, while there were other (much better) tables free, that we ended up asking for. I’ve waited a REALLY long time for simple orders. This morning I got nothing but a latte. Got a number placard to put on my little table outside where my friend was having some French toast. Sat and waited for 20 minutes until I asked a waiter about it, then 5 minutes later he told me that they’re «just making it now» and 5 minutes later I had it.
Half an hour isn’t how long you wait for a latte. It’s how long you wait for a deep dish pizza.
I live close-​by. It would be great if I loved it. But four times in two years I’ve gone, three times I was annoyed and the one time that everything went well, it was still a bit pricey and the service on that occasion was really just average.
It needs a restaurant makeover from one of those TV shows…

Decent, slowish service but the noodle soup with prawns had good prawns and just the right amount of spice

This place is similar to Crepevine. Standard American food options– breakfast specials, eggs cooked every which way, soup, pasta, crepes, salads, burger, sandwiches, wahh… they got some Asian food though?! You order at the counter and then grab a seat. If you have a larger party, it can be difficult to get a seat outdoors. There’s seating inside, but it’s somewhat cramped with people standing in line to order good. The service is friendly. They’re willing to accommodate special food requests and substitutions. And a waitress came by several times to refill water, etc. Food is decent. It’s a solid option if you’re in the area and want something quick.

The food is so so good, which is why I come here a lot. By the way I am writing this review why these two little girls are annoying the shit out of me. Which is why when they asked me are they good for kids, I said yes. If they said are they good for kids around me, FUCK NO.
The menu is pretty medium. We are looking at omelettes, breakfast burritos, eggs Benedicts, savory crepes, sandwiches, Asian food (kung Pao chicken for example), pasta (e.g. Seafood linguini), and dessert crepes.
The crowd is a mix, but let’s cut the crap because it’s full of homos. Gay power!

I am absolutely in love with this place. It’s hands down the best crêpe place I’ve ever been to. Any of the delicious desert crepes are great by themselves or to split for a desert. They’re breakfast dishes, like the eggs Benedict and breakfast burrito, are always well sized and you certainly get your money’s worth.
Their mimosas are also delicious as well as any of their other beverages. The upstairs seating is comfortable and spacious.
The newly renovated squat and gobble at west portal is just as great as the old one.

Well, as a gay man, it’s hard to miss Squat and Gobble since it is centrally located at the corner of Gay & Gay. Underneath the Lookout, diagonal from the gym, and near rows of LGQBT-​friendly bars, this charming little «café & crepery» seems to be a go-​to spot for folks who want to *ahem* scope out the neighborhood. *side eye* I mean, that’s why my visiting gay friends and I went. *cough* Real talk. Well, honestly, we wanted to have brunch at Kitchen Story, but the wait was horrendously long and we were getting too hungry. And even more real than this: one of my friends was severely hungover and needed food, stat! We decided to try this spot and I’m glad we did.
Another friend of mine who lives in the Castro suggested we go here so we don’t have to wait since we were also on a tight schedule. The line at Squat and Gobble was pretty long too though. On a Sunday early afternoon, we waited about 20 minutes in line. While you wait, you’ll notice these towering menus of breakfast and lunch items. They serve American and Italian– and French-​inspired breakfast, lunch (soups, sandwiches, heartier meals), baked goods, and interestingly enough, some Asian food.
Now, all of us were planning to have some mimosa and bloody marys. The friend ahead of us in line told the cashier that we wanted to sit outside and then the cashier gave some inaudible and hurried explanation. Given it was incredibly busy and loud in there, we all just said «Huh? Oh okay.» Unfortunately, we didn’t understand that were sitting in an outside area where we cannot drink alcohol AND that we had to serve ourselves when the food came out because it’s apparently an area that belongs to the city (?). And because it’s not private property and is considered a public space, alcohol is not allowed on the premises. So when we ordered our food at the register and was told we couldn’t order alcohol because of where we were sitting, we were a bit miffed… but then, we thought, «Well maybe this is a sign for us to not drink anymore today.» :P
When we sat outside in the un-​covered patio (the patio closest to the restaurant receives service and they can drink alcohol outside), it was a bit awkward and inconvenient to keep going up to claim our food when a server would signal it’s ready. That kinda made for an uncomfortable dynamic for brunch and disrupted our flow of conversation. However, despite this, I’ll say the food was pretty good. I ordered a NorCal omelette (chicken apple sausage, sun-​dried tomatoes, avocado, broccoli, mushrooms, pepper jack cheese, salsa, and sour cream) which came with delicious rosemary potatoes. This was definitely filling and satisfied my post-​night-​of-​partying/​dancing needs. I also tried a bite of my friend’s side order of bacon. It was nicely fried and had a thickness I enjoyed.
Under «normal» circumstances, I think this would’ve been a perfect brunch: short wait, good food, nice outdoor space to gossip/​laugh/​reminisce and enjoy the California sunshine… but the no-​alcohol rule and the self-​service of the front patio area somewhat marred an otherwise good experience. At least now we know that’s how they operate at Squat and Gobble in the Castro. I just wish that was articulated more clearly to *all* of us by the cashier. Ultimately, I’m still giving this spot 4 stars for tasty food, convenience, and a prime location.
