History

Established in 1998.

Sports Basement was founded in 1998 in a warehouse in San Francisco’s Mission Bay neighborhood. Since then the business has grown to four huge stores covering the San Francisco Bay Area. The Presidio Store is 80,000 square feet and boasts stunning views of the Golden Gate Bridge. There is no better place to begin a ride over the Golden Gate Bridge!

The runners, swimmers, backpackers, fitness fans, and triathletes who shop with us come for great prices and top-​notch service. Many know that our prices are low because we buy overstock and excess inventory from quality manufacturers and pass along the savings to our customers. We rented bikes to bike the Golden Gate Bridge. Got a 10% discount for checking in on Unilocal.George was very helpful.
They are the rentals closest to the bridge. We were able to bike the bridge, all the way to battery spencer and bike back on the bridge within 3 hrs even after spending a lot of time at battery spencer and stopping for pics. They are pretty flexible with the time limits for 3 hour rentals.
If u choose to take the ferry from Sausalito, they have a drop off place at 1196 Columbus. That way you won’t have to bike all the way up to the store.
Parking is free too.
Would definitely come back!

Sports Basement is THE BEST! The front wheel of my bike tired was bent when I went to ride it the other morning :(so I took it to Sports Basement to see if I could get it fixed. The bike department folks are really nice, especially Tommy. Tommy quickly grabbed the right wheel for me and proceeded to replace my old wheel and tire right away! Not only did he help with my wheel, but Tommy was kind enough to grease my chain, and help fix my breaks for me. I didn’t even have to ask, he said that he had time and didn’t mind helping me. I learned a bit from Tommy that afternoon, and will absolutely come back to Sports Basement for any bike needs that I may have.
Additionally, I once went to Sports Basement to see if I could find some simple strap in pedals for my bike. I went to the «rental» section to see if they had any that I could check out, and the man (didn’t catch his name unfortunately) in that department was incredibly kind, too! He said that he thought that he might have a pair just «laying around in the back,» and he proceeded to go to the back and then just hand me a brand new pair of pedals with straps — free of charge!

We rented bikes to ride to Sausalito and our experience with Sports Basement was excellent. The rental prices seem to be the same across the city, so the «Basically Free» offer is a steal. Save yourself and the employees a little stress and make sure to rent from the location near the wharf or reserve online if you want to (and you do) take advantage of the «Basically Free» promo.

This Sports Basement location is definitely out of the way but definitely worth checking out if you’re near Chrissy Fields. It’s the largest one in the area. They took over an old supermarket. I usually go to the ones in Campbell and Sunnyvale.
Since it’s a bigger store, their selection is much larger and it seems like you can always find better deals here that you wouldn’t normally find at the other locations. Just be prepared to do some digging around for bargains because it’s a bit disorganized here.

This place is just okay. I find that I only end up buying something about 1 out of 3 visits, because they usually don’t have what I need in either style or size. Their fitting rooms are the absolute worst too. Tiny with very little semblance of privacy, and nowhere to put your own clothes besides the filthy floor because there is just one hook for hangers. Nobody asks you if you need help or how everything worked out. A guy working the area just looked right at me as I was leaving the fitting room and I was going to ask him about another size but he turned the other direction and walked away before I could. Fine, I’ll leave without buying something.
I hate to say it but if you need running shoes or a racing swimsuit or workout apparel, Sports Authority is a better bet. This place might be suitable for someone needing camping or hiking gear.

Not happy with my stay here. The front check in people are rude and I was not happy with how they answered the phone when I asked for suggestions on where to go and what to do in the city. Over rated. And horrible experience

If your even a little bit active you will need to visit a sporting store at some point in your life. Sports Basement or «SB» has everything you could imagine. I’m pretty active myself with running, biking, and swimming and these guys tend to have it all. Also in the winter you can get discounted lift tickets and rent your ski/​boarding equipment here for supercheap! I think the rentals are only $ 20 total!
I really appreciate how involved SB is in the community. They give back a lot of money to local causes, they take old running shoes and recycle them, and they have a «community room» in their store that they allow running and cycling groups to use for free. I could go on and on about how great this place is but I will end it by saying that they have the most awesome employees, everyone is super nice and knowledgeable. Check it out for yourself.

I love this store. Sale racks are all messy but the prices can be unbelievably good. I was looking for a waterproof shell jacket and they had a lovely maroon Marmot Gortex one but $ 200 regular price. I got a North Face shell on sale 20% off and 10% more. It wasn’t Gortex but waterproof and packable for travel.
On the ½ off rack I found a white/​gray North Face Denali jacket half off. I don’t usually wear white jackets as they show dirt easily. But with another 10% member off it can’t be beat. I could shop here all the time at those prices.

What a great place this is. They literally have everything for any sport, and great selections. Prices are pretty good too, not the lowest, not the highest. I only wish they had a couple of more people manning the various departments to answer questions.
Big plus is that a percentage of your purchase can go to the SFUSD school of your choice.

All about sports!
Whether you are an active person or just want to shop for one who is, this is the place to visit! I have yet to visit this place in search of some sports or outdoors related item and come out empty handed! The layout inside the store is very nice and easy to navigate and the entire space feels inviting even if you are not looking to buy anything specific and are just looking around.
The parking lot is a big thing in the city. This is one place that you can just drive to anytime of the week and not worry about finding a parking spot. OK, maybe you should avoid the place if there is a race or special event going on in the area, but you get my meaning.
I think you get a 10% discount if you are a 24 Hour Fitness member, but not a 100% sure, so do not hold it against me if I am wrong!

Shopping here makes me want to be more sporty.
You can find some crazy awesome off-​season deals and even the fitness of the people working here give you an adrenaline rush. Fit people trying to help you be more fit. Fit. Have I mentioned the fitness of the people who work here?
AND they’re just plain awesome. and nice. and fit.
I want to be just like them.
Also, they have classes, crazy deals, support non-​profits, stock an array of things at all sorts of prices, have hella parking, and are just so beautifully organized. And the views from the parking lot are breathtaking.

I’ve rented, purchased, browsed for and/​or tried on gear at other places but I keep coming back here because it’s awesome.
Rentals:
Top notch. Bikes, tents, misc camping gear, it all works great and is well priced and of great quality. My tent last weekend was simply awesome.
Store:
Their prices are good and they offer the ability to try stuff on that you otherwise wouldn’t be able to. They’re definitely worth checking out.
Loyalty program:
Their new program seems pretty good. I’ve only used it a few times so far but I think it’s a cool twist to get to select your charity of choice.
Overall I’ve always been extremely happy with my experience here.

Cane in for bike rentals and ended up shopping until we ran out of time! I hear it’s $ 15 for 3 hours. Great place to bike around here. Free parking while you bike. Helmets available.
They play the best music here. Good ol’ jams from the early 90’s.
Good prices. I got ski pants for under $ 50. Got 10% off checking in and $ 25 off the membership!
I think it used to be a super market. Huge place. Staff is friendly.

Rented ski boots from here and even asked for help in sizing but in the end they didn’t fit very well and my feet hurt so bad that I only could ski for 3 hours and then needed to stop. What a waste of money… also the people that work here aren’t all that friendly. Sigh.
Also the guy at the register tried to sell me an adult lift ticket when I clearly said young adult. Thank god I checked before I paid or else I would have been cheated of $ 20.

$ 15⁄3 hours? What a steal! Use the check in offer to avoid tax (in other words, it’s 10% off). They offer helmets if you want one. Bandages and alcohol pads are also offered in the front. How do I know such details, you ask? Let’s just say you should slow down when you need to make sharp turns and/​or going downhill.
This is a great place to rent if you are planning to cross the Golden Gate Bridge or just want to explore the park.
They have a bunch of other sports stuff. Use the 10% off!

If you’re a rookie trying to bike across the Golden Gate then this is your best location. It was roughly $ 54 for 2 people to rent the cheapest bike without helmets and locks for 3 hours. They provide a bike route but it’s pretty easy to get around since many people bike around the area.
Three hours is honestly plenty of time unless you plan to have a picnic or go all the way to Sausalito. My bf and I bike across the Golden Gate Bridge and back to Palace of the Fine Arts past Sports Basement and we still had time to spare.
Note to first timers: Go slow and yield to pedestrians. Be aware of your surroundings especially when experienced bikers are behind you trying to get past you. Pedestrians know you’re a rookie and they’re watching our for you, so why not watch out for them as well. It wouldn’t hurt to slow down or even stop and walk past them first then speed away on your bike. A lot of tourists stop to take pictures and they may not notice you even if you scream since there’s traffic so SLOW DOWN.

A total fun land for those who enjoy new sports gear and supplies.
I came with a friend to help pick out new ski clothing. Once we figured out what to get, I perused the store for quite a while looking at everything from athletic gear to the rentals available.
There’s a lot of great stuff here! A wide selection, good brands, great sales, many colors to choose from (I’m one of those people that often get same item in a couple different colors. Workout shirts, ahem!) and multiple sizes of each item can keep you here for at least an hour. If you don’t have an hour to spend, you’ll probably feel a bit sad leaving the store without making your way around it.
And while you’re here you can grab all the supplements and nutritional noms you need. The staff is also super helpful.

I love Sports Basement SO much. They have everything, like seriously everything. Outdoor wear, gear, snacks for people who work out, lift tickets, just everything you would need for an active life style. The people who work here are friendly, and you can tell there’s a good sense of community here. Lots of community and local events. It’s everyone’s favorite local small chain!
I find the prices to be just alright, a bit on the expensive side. I remember it being more of a deal when I was younger, but I suppose if you’re wanting to buy active wear/​gear, the base line price is going to be expensive anyway. So if you’re looking at it that way, then the prices are probably reasonable. Plus, there’s usually always some kind of discount or sale going on, so, while still expensive, at least it’s nice to feel like you got some type of deal.
Oh, also, when I came here today, there was a table with a giant bowl of free chocolates, and a cooler filled with all sorts of free delightful drinks — Pelligrino, Perrier, juice, and lots and lots of good craft beers! That was definitely a nice touch. And it’s stuff like that that will keep me coming back again and again!

Oh this place is a must visit for the outdoor enthusiast.
This place sits at an amazing location a Chrissy Fields. You can buy your equipment, get your bike tuned up, and walk out the door and literally get onto the great outdoors.
It has an amazing view of Golden Gate Bridge and direct access to the parks and ocean.
Parking is limited but you might get lucky. I recommend carpool or Über or Lyft.
Inside the staff is great they are friendly and also outdoorsman.
The place is huge and you’ll only need to make one stop to get all that you will need for the outdoors. There is also a coffee shop and small sitting area inside and outside.

The back room has all the deals so make your way to the back of the store first to find good deals.

Berlin
Wir haben hier Räder ausgeliehen, um über die Golden Gate zu fahren. Man bekommt die Räder für 3h oder einen Tag. Es gibt Einheitsräder mit 7 Gängen zum Standardpreis, beim Ausleihen hat man sich nicht besonders viel Mühe gegeben und ohne viel Beratung hatten wir innerhalb 10min 4 Räder. Man muss sich zu Beginn am PC anmelden und persönliche Angaben machen.
Die Lage ist perfekt für eine Tour nach Sausalitos (Achtung viel Steigung und Abfahrten). In 45min ist man auf der anderen Seite und kann sich «stärken» für die Rückfahrt.
Sehr positiv: riesiger kostenloser Parkplatz vor der Tür

in der nähe von crissy field liegt der sports basement. hier bekommt man vor allem sehr günstige radklamotten. die rennräder sind auch nicht wirklich teuer hier. die beratung war ganz ok. auch wenn der californische akzent manchmal etwas schwierig ist.
an triathlonmarken führen sie zoot und blueseventy.
ein teil ist nur outdoor und ski. dann gibt es noch ein abschnitt nur mit mannschaftssportsachen. der rest ist dann weiträumig auf schwimmen, radeln und laufen aufgeteilt.
