It was a typical beautiful Saturday morning in Noe. Farmer’s market in full swing. My husband, 2yr old son and I were standing in front of the store chatting with a friend. I noted how cool the glasses were and told my husband we needed to check the place out when they opened. We both where glasses and loved the styles in the store front. That is until Olga (i can only assume it was her) came out and told us we could not stand in front of her store front. She was rude and obnoxious. It’s a Sat in Noe and there are people everywhere! Embrace it! Invite people in. Be part of it. But noooo, instead she reminded us that she is a paying renter and we reminded her that we are taxpayers and the sidewalk belongs to us. Not a chance I’ll set foot in that place.

I usually refer my patients who are looking for mykita to SFH, they always find edgy and unique frames here. Fantastic selection and great quality eyewear and great service. This is not your mall store, handmade pieces that you will find nowhere else in SF. James, Veo Optics

j’adore my new glasses to the ends of the earth! classic black frame nerd glasses (with a titanium superhero twist), but undoubtedly joining my lot of random perfect possessions:

olga is a supersweet fashionista whose sophisticated style is sure to please even the most finicky of clients. she finesses all your personal preferences (my flattish nose & chipmunk cheeks and desire for wanton cat-​eye with a retro throwback look) with great charm. when my order was delayed from europe olga offered up a brand new flattering loaner pair which i ended up loving even more than my original order, hence an easypeasy swap.
from an excellent optometrist recommendation to swift top notch lens fittings, olga gracefully executed the entire experience to be such a pleasant most accommodating adventure that i simply had to bring her a fresh flower stem as kind thanks to mirror her lovely expertise/​helpfulness!

So, we didn’t actually buy glasses here, but we did stop in to see if they would adjust my husband’s glasses. The people here are super nice and knowledgeable, and they fixed my husband’s frames for FREE.
That’s pretty awesome and deserves five stars in my book.

Before Spectacles, I preferred wearing contacts. But since my girlfriend (now wife) introduced me to them, I have bought 2 pair of eyeglasses and 1 pair of sunglasses from them and LOVE each pair (my wife has 2 pair of eyeglasses and 2 pair of sunglasses). We both get compliments on our eyewear all the time. Dmitri and Olga are extremely knowledgable about what frames are most complimentary. I like the fact that they will voice their opinion about what works and what doesn’t. For my most recent pair, Olga pushed me out of my comfort zone to get a pair of modern horn-​rimmed glasses made by Dita and suggested I shy away from a more expensive pair. They are also great about making minor adjustments years later. Some of the reviews suggest they are snobby, but my wife and I have found them anything but that (and neither of us are hipster or fashionistas). Huge endorsement, keep it up!

Ok selection but bad service here. Go to Veo on Market St instead.

Ok Grunhauser, I don’t storm, never needed to. The lab is responsible for the lenses. There isn’t any value that you offered. As far as the refund goes, that would be my bank issuing a credit until you had enough in your account to cover what was due. If you were to fabricate a new frame, which you didn’t, you would have made measurements and I would have been aware of this. The truth is that you don’t return phone calls and you tweaked the frames insuring the Rx to fail from having lenses off axis. Did I mention of the cuts on the bridge of my nose from your über-​hip, but poorly design frames. It’s too bad Dimitri, let my receipt be the best judge of character.

Working on my fourth pair of eyeglasses from this place, and I get rave, rave reviews on each and every pair. These days I’m sporting the ones Dmitri made (as in, really, truly designed, shaped and created), and they are, as my coworkers and some clients flatteringly observe «gangster.»
Seriously, these frames are unique, and manage to be both timeless and hip.
I also appreciate the advice Dmitri gives on what frames flatter one’s face.

Sending another 5-​star review for this place, as once again I’ve received absolutely the best customer service one could ask for. The brands are top-​quality, from über hip to timeless, and the selection is extremely well edited.
Selection features some of the best quality eyewear, and you won’t be looking like everyone else on the street…
The owner Dmitri is incredibly thoughtful in helping you select the right frame/​s for your look, lifestyle, and always provides options for you to choose from. It’s a no pressure sale, and I’ve even been afforded the opportunity to return frames that just didn’t fit right (with no issues whatsoever).
I’ve been coming here for years, and still have some of the initial frames I’ve bought, so though you do make an investment at purchase, you can count on your purchase to be such high-​quality that you’ll have your frames for a very long time.

I also had a very bad experience here.

I just picked up a pair of glasses from this store less than 24 hours after ordering them. Their staff was kind, courteous, and willing to answer any questions I had about the ordering process. I could not be happier.
As an added bonus, they have the largest selection of Ørgreen frames I’ve seen anywhere in the city.

This is my first scathing Unilocal review. I’m not typically compelled to complain unless I find service to be inhumanly unacceptable. I’m even more compelled to write this after reading Two D.‘s review below. Apparently, we had an almost identical experience.
I ordered (and put money down on) a pair of $ 600 glasses four months ago, and have JUST today gotten confirmation that they have shipped.
Two weeks after I paid for the glasses, I called and was told that the glasses were coming from Japan and that it would be a few weeks. After a few weeks had passed, I called the shop, got no response, then emailed. A week later, I dropped by to see a sign up on the door that the shop had flooded. I have compassion for a business disaster like this, but if SFH had any sort of service ethic they would have called their pending-​order clients to let them know that business was put on hold until repairs were made. When the shop reopened, I stopped in and they offered me a pair of loaner frames in a different color than I ordered. I’m fairly certain that they just weren’t able to sell the purple frames and were trying to pawn them off on me. Just last week, I stopped in and gave an ultimatum — either confirm that I will get my glasses within a week, or I demand my money back.
With service like this, I am fairly certain that this shop is not long for this world. This experience was entirely unacceptable. I strongly urge fellow eyeglass shoppers to find another business to take their money to. No high-​end frames are worth the agony of dealing with SFH.

I have to say I had a 5 star experience. The first frames I chose ended up with two problems: the new prescription wasn’t right and the frames were falling off my nose. After a few iterations of trying to get them working I had been demoralized. The owner and I decided to just go with another frame. I probably had to come back and visit 8 times in total.
They didn’t give me a run around any of the times I came in and were very customer service oriented. I really appreciated that after having a terrible experience the last time I upgrade my glasses.
I’m glad to give Dimitri and team my 5 star review and recommend them to anyone else looking for the hottest frames in the city.

Dimitri is amazing. This shop has the coolest frames and really falls inline with a lot of what I believe in: Great quality, uniqueness, and the best of the indie posh boutique-​y brands you can think of from around the world. It also has the best and most diverse titanium frame collection I have found in one place.
I got the orgreens a while back which I adore. The only downside: I wish I could shop here more often, a girl needs shoes too.

I walked in doubting if I would make a purchase; I walked out a happy man with a pair of dope new frames! I gotta say in terms of stocking some of the most cutting edge, high quality, and fashionable frames, it’s hard to beat Spectacles for Humans. The owner Dimitri has impeccable taste and a keen ability to match a pair of specs on each individual face.
While I initially preferred the style of some Mykita frames, Dimitri was able to provide some constructive criticism as to why the frames he choose for me would work better. After much deliberation and thought, I picked a pair of Wolfgang Proksch frames and they looked like they belonged on my face!
But anyway, do go here if you’re interested in checking out some amazing frames that are possibly not available anywhere else in the US. Be aware that the products here are not cheap (obviously). ⁵⁄₅

I have a collection of over 200 pairs of vintage sunglasses so when i broke a lens Larry David style yesterday on my vintage PERSOLS i went to lenscrafters, which belongs to the same company that owns PERSOL.
they were dumbfucks. straight up lame. i knew their job better than they did. what else is new.
dialed up Unilocal and found this joint, got on the phone and it would be highly unlikely that one could have a more pleasant business exchange from that point forward.
the man had my replacement lenses crafted in less than 20 minutes, answered all my nosey questions about his craft with the articulation and passion of an artisan that actually gives a fuck about his profession. even showed me how the gizmos work.
i hope he follows up with his apparent desire to one day create custom shades because he will have a customer here.
yay for people who love their work!

I saw the article about Dimitri in the Chron several months ago, but had to wait to go until my VSP said I could get a checkup. So I went to my optometrist and got checked and got a new prescription.
I went in and met Deejay and Johanna (Dimitri was nowhere to be found on several visits), who were very nice and helpful. I spent probably an hour looking and frames and got really unique frames that look great.
It turned out that my optometrist had changed my prescription without explaining to me what she was doing. When I got the glasses, I couldn’t read with them which is what I mainly do with them. Deejay looked at my old glasses and figured out what had happened to my prescription. He said to go back to the optometrist and get rechecked and that opticians and optometrists have an understanding that under these circumstances, the remake of the lenses would be at no charge.
So I just got my new lenses and they are great.
Do go here if you want unique frames that you will see no where else. They are the only people in the US who carry the Derapage frames I got.
Do not go here if you want glasses that are cheap or even moderately priced. They do not take VSP. I have a difficult prescription and so the frames were $ 600 and the lenses were $ 600.
If you want moderately priced glasses, go to City Optics. They are great also.

I was excited to be in the area and see what this boutique optical shoppe had to offer. I love the brands they «specialize» in and was quite impressed by the reviews on here. What a disappointment.
For «experts» they must have had a really off day. I was interested in a particular Mykita Frame – one that is on the homepage of Mykita in full force and has been for multiple months. When I asked about the availability of this frame the rude woman looked at me with a blank stare and then started referencing their catalogs.
She then mumbled that it would be too new for the catalog – then to get rid of me, told me:
«Well we can order any frame but if we don’t stock it you have to buy it first…»
WTF? I have NEVER came across this response in my time buying high-​end optics at ANY boutique dealer in numerous locations.
She put the rush/​brush off combo move on me… I know this technique – usually applied by inadequate yet arrogant sales reps. Total turn off. Especially considering that I have had the pleasure of dealing (purchasing) from another wonderful optical boutique down here in Los Angeles. This L.A. boutique’s layout, selection, and attention to customer service make this place seem unbearable. The boutique I purchased from down here also offered to order in frames WITHOUT any pre-​pay either… hmmmmmm I feel sorry for the optically obsessive in San Francisco – because…
The spectacles may be for humans, but the service is not fit for a dog.
