SFMOMA

SFMOMA or popular known as «MOMA» is truly a San Francisco Cultural Assest its artwork greet millions upon arrival and departure at SFO Airport. Also SFMOMA gift shop at Yerba Buena Lane is a very good. The soon to be open Museum in the heart of SOMA at 3^rd st and Minna (Right turn to Minna from 3^rd) will surely bring many must needed Art Lover’s to the city.

I’m not sure how or why anyone could give SFMOMA less than 5 stars.
Im sad that it’s been closed and I can’t wait to see the new space.
We had a annual passes for years. It’s nice to be able to stop in and just take the time to check out one exhibit, not feeling rushed to go and check out everything else the same day. We would just stop in for an hour or 2 here and there. I think the first time I visited was almost 20 years ago. I always end up standing in front of something questioning my thoughts. Finding something absolutely amazing and on the other side of that not being impressed at all by something else. The shows cover such a hug span of creative processes, mediums and style. Not to mention Modern Art has a huge temporal scale. Early photography from Lewis Carroll really blew my mind when I saw it, that was an amazing show of work that no one really knows about. It’s bodies of work like those that stick out in my memories.
I was there on the last day before they closed, while it was sad I know that when it reopens it’s going to be more amazing than ever before. It’s way better than the NYC MOMA in so many ways.
I hope they keep the weekend children’s art activities.

I love SF MOMA. Their collection of Bob Arneson is fantastic. If they displayed more of them, they would definitely get 5 stars.
The building itself is architecturally interesting. They regularly update their permanent collection and have traveling exhibits that are phenomenal.
The gift store is pricey, but has highly-​coveted items; so for the most part, worth it.
The parties they throw here are elegant, fun and high-​quality. The food and beverages are perfect and there is usually an interesting theme.

*Expect to spend a whole day here.
*Don’t forget to check out the rooftop garden and grab a bite to eat at Blue Bottle Café.
*Cakes are decorated to look like some of the art you’ll see in the museum. I got the Mondrian Cake, with a Hot Chocolate.
*I ATE Art.

Can’t wait to see the renovated space. One of my favorite museums in the City. Great store for unique and fun gifts. The Free Target days are nuts though – anticipate the crowds.

The Museum building and all exhibits have been temporarily relocated to another site while a major renovation of its spectacular main building is underway. Reopening is scheduled for early 2016, retaining the main entrance lobby with a few changes —

There are some phenomenal pieces on display from unknown, new artists. If you are going expecting to see a lot of the modern «classics» or more established, big name artists, you’ll be disappointed in the SFMOMA. If you want to gain exposure to new and exciting artists, this is the place to do it. The layout of this museum is a little confusing and the atmosphere is cold and unpleasant. Modern doesn’t have to mean lifeless. The galleries are nice with well presented information and lots of seating for lengthy contemplation.
The rooftop patio is a nice place to chill but watch out in the cafeteria — they have signs all over saying «no outside food and drink» and they mean it. I had a low carb protein bar in my bag and I took it out to munch on (I purchased a coffee at the cafeteria) and not two seconds after I opened the wrapper, a security guard with a very nasty attitude came over to chastise me for bringing food in the museum. I hadn’t even take a BITE of my snack and she went what could nearly be described as «nucking futs.» I ended up going in the bathroom and eating my snack in there. I purchased a drink there but I need a sugar free /​low carb snack option and the museum café offered nothing that would work with my dietary restrictions.
The museum is close enough to a BART station, making it easy to get in and out of the city. It’s only a couple of blocks walking distance.

Got to see this before they closed for expansion.
$ 11 student fee.
They have 5 levels. Almost impossible to see everything.
«The Clock» movie was really cool. I can’t imagine how long or bored someone must’ve been to put that movie together…

Normally, museums of modern art leave me dazed and confused. With that said, I must say I wasn’t as confused as I thought I would be after going to this one.
Disclaimer: I happened to come across SFMOMA when admission was free (4 free days before closing for renovations). So this may have biased my results.
Not sure why the place needs renovations, as the interior looked pretty decent to me. The staff mentioned the museum is going to expand into an adjacent building, so the finished product (2015 or so) is going to be seriously impressive.
There were definitely some pretty cool sketches in here, as well as some paintings. The one WTF exhibit for me was the cow’s head in formaldehyde. Poor cow.
With that said, the one REALLY COOL exhibit (not sure if it’ll still be here in 2015) is «The Clock». This is a 24h film, made completely of spliced film segments (Hollywood, European, etc.) where all the clocks actually line up to real-​time. For example, at 1621, the scenes in this film during this minute all show 1621 on the clocks. Some films you will recognize, some you won’t. But I can’t imagine how much editing this took. Props to the artist and his army of volunteers! You watch this in a darkened theatre on the top floor. When I was watching this, I couldn’t help but keep thinking something big was going to happen in the film. You just wait for it. and. oh wait, now it’s another film. Repeat for the next 1439 minutes.
The very top floor has a REALLY NICE patio that would be great for chilling over a coffee or beer. It was reserved for a special event when I was there though.

The fact that I’ve been waiting for quite some time to go to SFMOMA might have raised my expectations to high. I’ve lived in the bay area for 4 years now and just went for the first time.
I went on the weekend where admission was free. I guess the building is going to shutdown for renovations and they wanted to do this event to get people to see the galleries before they are moved so that renovations can begin.
The building itself was very cool, i loved the floors and staircase in the center. And I really enjoyed the 2^nd floor exhibits. Some very skillful pieces of art indeed.
However, the other floors were not that exciting [to me]. They were just all photography. I don’t mean to knock photography because i know its a very artistic craft. It’s just that I don’t find it nearly as interesting as paintings, sketches, larger-​than-​life collages, etc. Photography just doesn’t do it for me. So the fact that at least 2 floors of the building was just photography really left me wanting more from this place.
I’m glad I can say that i’ve been to SFMOMA, and when they open again in a few years i may go back, depending on the Exhibits which I will want to follow carefully.
Oh yeah, and the top floor courtyard area was okay, we were expecting more of a garden setting.

I was able to check out MOMA before it closes for 2.5 years for renovation. It was open for 24 hours on that Saturday so I came around 10pm and there was quite a crowd wanting to do the same. There was a bar right when you enter and it was complete hipster land there. I guess since it was a night event, there werent many dslrs out there so it was me and my two friends busting out our cameras while everyone was dressed so nice and classy.
There are floors and floors of art, including sculptures, paintings, and photographs. I have to admit that I dont know much about art and the only piece I recognized was Diego Rivera’s paintings. I really enjoyed the abstract act since they are such huge paintings that probably have en even bigger and deeper meaning… that I could not grasp. I still appreciated it though! I cant wait for the reopening of MOMA so I can explore the walls once again!
**TIPS**
1) Cant wait for an updated collection in 2.5 years!

One of my neighbors informed me a few months ago that SFMOMA was going to close temporarily to expand its space in June. I was taken aback when informed of the closing. After getting over the shock, it made much sense to me. SFMOMA has quite a lot of artwork to display and there is not enough space in its incarnation to display all those fabulous modern artworks.
I just survived a rough spring semester. And I sure as hell needed to blow off a lot of steam to recover from it all! Got an email from SFMOMA announcing the recent four-​day celebration countdown to closing and admission would be free! Free – I’m There! What a great way to decompress and recover from the stress and strain of this past semester by viewing and contemplating modern art in painting, photos, sculpture, and film.
I went on the first day, Thursday 30 May 2013 at 10h00. What?! There is already a long line snaking down along Third Street?! Well, the line moved pretty fast and when those of us got to the door, we were told if we were not waiting for a tote bag, just get a general admission ticket from one of the attendants.
Free tote bag – what tote bag?! One had to go to the website, fill out an online coupon, print it, and bring it to SFMOMA to redeem for a free limited edition tote bag promoting «SFMOMA on the go.» I was able to get one for myself by giving my email address on the way out so I can continue receiving email updates.
While the building is undergoing its expansion and renovation, SFMOMA will have special exhibitions in various parts of SF. Check the website for more details:
I went to the fifth floor as my usual MO to check out the pastries at Blue Bottle coffee. After perusing the offerings, I decided I would splurge on the cake inspired by the British artist Damien Hirst’s 1993 artwork, «Amylamine»: lemon velvet cake, cream cheese frosting, white chocolate ganache, and edible confetti. The edible confetti was colored dots of rice paper. It would be a long while before I am able to eat a Blue Bottle Coffee pastry again here at SFMOMA.
Hirst’s «Amylamine» is household paint on canvas: a white background with dots of various colors. The painting was located on the third floor gallery amongst the other artworks in SFMOMA’s regular collection. Hirst is best known for his formaldehyde artworks. There was a bull’s head one on display not to far from «Amylamine» in the gallery. There was a mother trying to explain to her young children (who must have been five or under) the bull head preserved in formaldehyde and glass. It is 1994’s «Philip (The Twelve Disciples).» At least it was not the tiger shark one, 1991’s «The Physical Impossibility of Death in the Mind of Someone Living.» That I believe, would have been rather scary yet fascinating at the same time for the children to see. I was surprised to see a LONG line snaking up and around the staircase for the Swiss video artist Christian Marclay’s THE CLOCK (2010). It is a video made of scenes from movies and television shows featuring a clock showing the actual time in real time. I would have liked to have seen this video art but the wait time was not worth trying my patience.
I visited the Garry Winogrand photo exhibit first. Winogrand was a photographer who photographed American life in the 20^th century. His photographs, especially the ones of New York, «depict the social issues of his time and in the role of media in shaping attitudes.» (Wikipedia) I overheard one of the visitors comment that many of the NY photos reminded them of the television show, MAD MEN. For me, it was quite interesting to see black & white photos of NYC life in the 1960s – gritty, untouched, and real. He took photos at major news events, such as capturing the goings-​on backstage at press conferences and presidential conventions. And to see pictures of what life was really like in the 1960s. And of course, one last visit to see artwork the SFMOMA already owns. Paintings and sculptures by Matisse. The aforementioned Damien Hirst. A self-​portrait of Jeff Koons. Marcel Duchamp’s «Fountain.» Rene Magritte’s «Personal Values,» and works by Johns, Picabia, Picasso, Kahlo, Rivera, Rauschenberg, Rothko, Kelly, Still, and Warhol – to name so many.
It will be quite interesting to see what the expanded space will look like in-​person when SFMOMA re-​opens in 2016. In the meantime, I will visit the «SFMOMA on the go» exhibitions taking place around SF such as the ones which will be upcoming at the Legion of Honor and the Contemporary Jewish Museum. Update #7 for 2013

Guess I’m not really fan of the modern art so SFMOMA doesn’t really tickle my fancy much…
I saw that SFMOMA was going to be closing for expansion & won’t be opening back up til 2016. Today was the last day they had the free day for everyone to check out the museum before they close their doors for the remodeling. Luckily, I found a parking spot just one block from the place since a car was just leaving. Paid the meter for 1hr & 15mins. We saw there was a line to get in, but it turns out that line was to show your RSVP to obtain a reusable bag. My sis have less patience than me so she’s like «We don’t need the bag; let’s just go!» So that’s what we did.
We walked around all the levels to glance at the artwork. Checked out the sculpture garden at the rooftop; didn’t see any sculptures up there. The rooftop garden is pretty cool area to chill after you looked thru the artworks & grab something from the café. I was thinking of trying the artwork-​like cake & coffee there, but the line was wayyy too long so didn’t end up getting anything.
Our fave thing about this place was the neato eye/​mushroom artwork. Other than that… we weren’t much at all intrigued.

SF MoMA (Museum of Modern Art) bridges acceptably well-​known art and artifacts making for an unthreatening artistic experience but still intense realizations, colours and treasures captured from around the globe.
Start your visit from the top to the bottom. From the 5^th floor Rooftop Garden, Turret Bridge and into the 20^th Century with selected art, and then onto the 4^th for Garry Winograd, a 1950s photographer who opted for the less-​than-​Stepford-​Wife-​midcentury imagery so often sold mainstream. On the 4^th floor, you’ll encounter an endless line that snakes down to the 3^rd floor waiting to see Christian Marclay’s The Clock (no photographs, please), used for the countdown, as Sf MoMA prepares to shut down, expand and rebuild the premises promising a «reimagining» with ever more fascinating bits of art. In the meantime, SF MoMA will be on the go from neighborhood to micro hood. The MuseumStore and Caffè Museo will remain open to the public. Though, the MuseumStore will relocate to 51 Yerba Buena Lane. «Talk» to Agent Ruby on the 3^rd floor and get acquainted with South Africa in Apartheid and After, and then onward to the 2^nd floor for a circus, Matisse, Marini, Picasso, Rothko, Warhol, Magritte, Pollock, Rauschenberg, Dalí, Rivera, Kahlo, amongst the regulars. The first floor is coat check, Wattis Theatre, The Schwab Room and the store and caffè.
The Countdown Celebration (100% FREE TO THE PUBLIC! Hurry!) rages on until June 2, tomorrow — it’s the last day you’ll be able to visit the brick and mortar version. Todays festivities include The Kitchen Sisters Present The Making Of … Submerged Turntable, The Workshop Residence, A Family Art Commission and Modern Art Desserts. Plus, Off the Grid Food Trucks (Fivetenburger, We Sushi, etc.) for your noshing pleasure. This evening, 6:00 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. poets, artists, music, SF Cinematheque, economusicians, performance artists, filmmakers and astronomers will present their works and engage with you. From 12 midnight come for jazz, artists, comedians, a 16 mm film of Frank Stauffacher’s Notes on the Port of St. Francis, and then Stella’s Super Secret Dance Party at 5:30 a.m. No, that’s not a misprint. This party will be going on non-​stop for 24 hours. From 6 a.m. to 12 noon there will be meditation, curators, dance critics, cooks, teachers, florists, pastry chefs, colonial-​era musicians, puppeteers, and LitQuake joining in for presentations, a hat making activity table, other sharings and more music.
Museum rules:
* No backpacks, no large bags, no umbrellas, no pens. Don’t touch the art and don’t eat or drink while perusing. No cell phone chatting and children must be supervised at all times. Smoking is prohibited everywhere in the museum and no closer than 20 feet from the front entrance.

I love the Arts, and I love museums. which is why the fam decided to treat me to SFMOMA on love yo MOMMA day! I was in for a treat! We decided to take BART in since the Giants game was going on that day and it was a short walk from the station.
It was unexpectedly not crowded that day, which was really nice. The entrance and stairway is spectacular! The large scripted banners hanging from the overhead skylight illuminate the lobby and add a brilliant shine to the dark interior colors. As you take your journey up the staircase, each floor offers a new view of the banners.
My favorite exhibit here was the Architect/​Artist drawings by Lebbeus Woods, insightful and unique look into the possibility of modern architecture. My favorite painting was the Picasso; but there were so many other brilliant, paintings, sculptures, photos and views to see here that I could not see them all in one day. I will have to return on a day off!

The San Francisco MOMA is a fun museum to visit. Every first Tuesday of the month they provide FREE admission for all visitors. Similar to the MOMA in NY or LACMA in LA, one could enjoy everything from contemporary art to photography, architecture and more. Pictured above are some of the art work featured in this museum.
They also have a rooftop garden where you could purchase coffee and snacks in between or after looking at all the artwork. It’s a great place to sit and chat, relax or study. Maybe on the way to the rooftop garden you might «Find Waldo» if you’re lucky =)

This is probably one of my all time favorite museums. I can spend a whole day here and usually do. I love their permanent collection which boasts Marchel DuChamp, Piccasso, Frida, a couple of Warhols, Magritte, and well you get my drift.
I love their photography exhibit which is always interesting and thought provoking. I heard they are expanding in 2016! yay!!!

SF MOMA is always a great place to visit when we are in the area. I must confess, with my father being a landscape artist, my taste in art trends more to the traditional; still, I can always find much here to admire and enjoy. The photography exhibits are great, and the rooftop garden area is a favorite.
Unfortunately, I found out on my last visit, SF MOMA is closing for three years soon, as they are adding a new wing to the museum. June 2, 2013 will be their last day open until 2016. So if you’ve been putting off that visit, better act fast or it will be a three-​year wait!

FREE Audio — Get is because then you don’t have to read all that boring stuff about the art. Not all the artwork though, just the highlighted ones, that’s fine. You do have to give them your Driver’s License for collateral.

4^th Fl — Jasper John — he does stuff with Numbers. I don’t get it, but they call it art. I liked the art Bushbaby — that’s my word of the day, an African animal. No photos allowed. Closes Sun 2÷3÷13.
4^th Fl — Jay DeFeo — she did some cool art — The Rose is famous. No photos allowed. Closes Sun 2÷3÷13.
3^rd Fl — South Africa in Apartheid & After: David Goldblatt, Ernest Cole, Billy Monk now thru 3÷5÷13. Lots of photos. I liked it.
2^nd Fl — Don’t be shy, don’t hold back — ok art. Paul Klee’s Circus — meh. new Work: Alessandro Pessoli — you can make shadows to change radio frequency — kinda fun.
I spent almost 2hr35min in there.

Zugegeben, ich bin kein großer Fan von Modern Art. Deshalb haben wir das Museum am Dienstag besucht, als es freien Eintritt gab.
Archtitektonisch hat mich der Bau angesprochen. Ich finde das Konzept außergewöhnlich und vor allem die obersten Etagen sehr gelungen.
Inhaltlich waren mir einige Bereiche (Installation mit den Leuchtstoffröhren, Kunst in Filmen) zu abgedreht und haben den Eindruck gemindert. Schön fand ich die Ausstellung zum Impressionismus und ein Teil der Cindy Sherman Ausstellung.
Insgesamt komme ich zu einer Bewertung von 3 Sternen.

SFMOMA is San Francisco’s modern art museum located in SoMa. SFMOMA has a nice layout and the interior design of the building (like the staircases) aligns very well with the art. Their art collection is okay. It is definitely better and more interesting than MOCA in Los Angeles, but it is nowhere near the collection you will find in the Art Institute of Chicago.
There is some good stuff though. Many prominent artists are featured like Jasper Johns, Frida Kahlo, Henri Matisse, Pablo Picasso, Jackson Pollock, Andy Warhol, and Roy Lichtenstein (a very impressive piece of his was featured). There was also some neat stuff throughout the museum. I liked The Utopian Impulse room, which featured many local experiments/​ideas/​designs/​models for technology and eco-​friendly living. I really liked the eco-​city built on water.
Pricing is high with tickets running at $ 18 each.
In addition to the art, you can find Blue Bottle coffee and desserts on the top floor (where you will also find the rooftop garden). I was not a huge fan of the pricey Mondrian Cake, but their desserts (which are inspired by artworks on display in the museum) are nice to look at.
SFMOMA is a nice way to spend a few hours in San Francisco. The tickets are expensive and they do not have a big collection. Still, there are some good pieces here and there; SFMOMA also has a gift shop that features both art and SF-​related trinkets that make for good gifts.
SFMOMA is located in a busy area so parking can be hard to find. There are nearby paid lots that are $ 15 per day.

Estaba alojado en el W Hotel, justo al lado.
Intenté entrar el martes, pero había tanta cola que al final Joy y yo decidimos volver otro día. El motivo es que el martes primero de mes es gratuito y ocurre un poco como en el Prado.
El jueves segundo intento estaba cerrado… vaya! había una especie de inventario. Al final solo pude acceder a la tienda de regalos.
Si quieres ser diferente en tus regalos y recuerdos de SF os recomiendo que os deis una vuelta. La cafetería restaurante del museo también es cojonuda.

Leider war zu unserem Besuch ein Großteil der Ausstellung wegen Umbau geschlossen, der Rest war eher durchschnittlich und keineswegs was man von einem MOMA erwartet hätte.
Der Bau selbst ist sehr ansprechend für jeden der ein wenig Architektur mag, ohne das wäre es meines Erachtens nach nicht unbedingt einen Besuch wert gewesen.

Schönes Gebäude, gute Werke (Warhol, Lichtenstein, Frida Kahlo, Picasso, usw) aber wenn man nicht in Kunst interessiert ist, ist kein muss in San Francisco.
In die Sonnenterrasse kann man am Ende gemütlich einen Kaffee trinken.

Pour les amateurs d’art contemporain ce musée expose de belles collections avec des artistes tels que Picasso, Matisse, Braque, Kandinsky, Klee, Miro.
Ce musée est ouvert tous les jours, sauf mercredi, de 11h00 à 18h00, le jeudi jusqu’à 21h00.
Je conseille ce musée à tous ceux qui aiment l’art contemporain surtout que le prix d’entrée est 10 $ pour les adultes.
Bön plan: l’entrée est gratuite le 1er Mardi de chaque mois.

Die Sammlung des MOMA SF ist nicht überwältigend, aber mich als Schweizer erfüllt ein Botta-​Bau in der Fremde immer wieder mit einem gewissen Stolz.
Schön gemacht ist der Museumsshop: grosse Auswahl und freundliche Bedienung!

Le Museum d’Art moderne de San Francisco vaut autant pour son architecture que pour ses collections. Ce n’est pas le Louvre ni Beaubourg mais on y passé un bon moment.
