The SFBMA is a loose collection of bicycle messengers who meet on the second Thursday every month at 6:30 p.m., at the International Longshore and Warehouse Union hall, at the listed address. The SFBMA is(or at least was) a corporation in California. At one time, I was an active member. I worked on the 2007NACCC(see below) and would hang out at the now gone Cassidy’s where a lot of messengers used to get their drinks. The purpose of the SFBMA: «We the messengers of the Bay Area, known as the San Francisco Bike Messenger Association, or SFBMA hereby state our mission; to promote unity and solidarity within the messenger community and to raise the status of our profession.» Membership: «Traditionally, anybody who was or is a S.F. bike messenger is a member of the SFBMA, in general terms. However, the rights, rules and responsibilities described herein apply only to members whose dues are current to within 60 days of the present.» The SFBMA also does associated events. For instance, they organized and brought to SF the 2007 North American Cycle Courier Championships. The SFBMA hosts a yearly«alleycat» race called«Quake City Rumble.» They also have a fund called the«Bones Fund» which gives out up to $ 500 to any messenger hurt on the job. The official trademark of the organization(although I am not sure it has been registered as such), is the«gravy dog.»
