Our salon has over two years of experience offering the thermal smoothing service and has had great results with clients of all hair types.

History

Established in 2007.

Leaving the Bay Area was the catalyst that made this very special salon a reality.

After moving back to his home state of Missouri, co-​owner Mark Schulte of Salon Mark Carlos realized that San Francisco was home for good. Spending only four months in Missouri, Mark called his now business partner, Carlos Gonzalez, and said, «I’m moving back to San Francisco and we’re going to open our own salon.»

I got my hair done by a new stylist at Salon Markcarlos at their new location and I LOVE IT! Elana Weinstein (sp) is one of the most hilarious, fun and creative stylists I have seen to date.
. I love my old stylist but we got stuck in rut, and Elana tried a haircut and color so far out of the box that my initial reaction was nervousness but it turned out that what she changed (warm to ash) changed not only the look of my hair but camoflouged the red In my skin so well! I also have a wide face and refused to cut the bangs I wanted straight across my forehead to side sweeping and my face looks narrower as well. she said she would honor any changes free of charge if I wasn’t happy, but to sit back and trust her.
Incidentally I do and will finally be able to sit back and trust a stylist whose aesthetic sense I could learn a thing two from!

I’ve lived in SF 12+ years and I will follow Mark&Carlos wherever they go. Every cut I get grows out and still looks good. GENIUS. I now have 2 small kids, moved to Marin, and cannot always find the time to get my hair cut every 6 weeks. So it’s nice to know my hairstyle isn’t limited to a pony tail between cuts.
Seriously worth the drive from Marin. I did try to find someone closer to home. Big mistake. Because once they cut your hair, everyone else is second rate.

Got a call from the salon in response to my original post. Came back to get my hair re-​colored and they were extremely accommodating in terms of finding a time that worked for me, offering me a free deep conditioning treatment, and sending me home with free products. I really appreciated the gesture and the fact that they went out of their way to fix my hair and make me feel valued.
In terms of my highlights, the color turned out better upon the second application of toner and is now a nice light brown (still lighter than I prefer, but maybe my hair just doesn’t like holding color?). The blowout again was great. Will definitely come back!

All I can say is wow, wow, wow!!! Matthew, the colorist extraordinaire, at Salon Mark Carlos saved my life!!! He made my wannabe do-​it-​yourself GO BLONDE at home disasters into a beautiful platinum blonde natural beauty. I am forever grateful for his obvious years of experience and quite frankly his God given talent for the transformation and life of my beloved hair. Mark Carlos himself and the rest of the staff were extremely nice and accommodating towards me and my lil doggie Bingo. Thanks Matt… :)

Wow. I’m surprised it’s taken me this long to write a review for Salon Mark Carlos.
Hang did my friends up-​do for her wedding. It was amazing. So naturally I called her for my wedding. My hair is shoulder length and I really wanted to wear my hair up. Hang performs miracles! She is a true artist. My hair looked amazing. I truly loved it and now love her!!!
After the wedding I wanted to get my hair cut. For this I called Tonia by recommendation of another friend. It’s been such a long time since I’ve received a REALLY great haircut. Tonia did a fantastic job. I love my hair.

I needed an emergency hair-​cut for my anniversary last week… didn’t want to spend $ 100+ on a hair-​cut so I requested a junior stylist…
the shampoo was great, she wasn’t a talker which i like… she had a little problem with my bangs, didn’t turn out great.
The next day I did my hair like i always do… realized one side is long than the other side… sucks
I guess you have to get senior stylist???

There’s a dearth of «man hair» reviews out there so I figured I’d chime in. Carlos is absolutely amazing. He does a great job on my difficult hair and always has ideas if I want to change something up. It’s difficult to describe, but there’s just a level of goodness that my hair gets from Carlos as compared with any other salon/​stylist/​fancy barber at the same of greater price.
The salon feels great too– it’s extremely clean, has a great style, and is laid out well. The folks working there were all nice both on the phone and in person.

I had followed Adam to Salon Mark Carlos (being a former Diva patron). After my first visit I can honestly say they exceeded my expectations and I will be back. The atmosphere and ambiance made me feel relaxed and pampered. Adam did a fantastic job transforming my hair via cut and color w/​a glaze. It came out soooo healthy and with mass shine. I can’t mention Adam’s name without adding props for his eyebrow design and make-​up skills. He is a true talent and professional. Kudos to all of those at Salon Mark Carlos… just a wonderful peace of heaven in our busy city. See you next time!

At a time when every penny/​minute counts, I CANNOT afford to have another hair disaster. I was thrilled to get Mark Schulte back on my hair. He is the best! My hair has never looked better. The salon is warm, modern and chic, and the entire team pampered me! OMG, How gorgeous are those black chandeliers? Park at Sutter Stockton — cheap and close.
You must have Adam do your make up! I left there ready for the runway.
Spectacularly consistent, and FIVE STARS.

Since I’m spending the summer in San Francisco, getting a cut from Carlos was at the top of my list. I used to go to him when he was at Elevation (and before I moved to Austin) and always LOVED the cuts and color he gave me, but not so much Elevation, with its operating-​room fluorescent lights that highlighted every pore, fine line and zit: not exactly a setting to give you the «i feel gorgeous» feeling you want when you’re getting pampered.
Carlos agreed completely and last year he and his longtime stylist friend, Mark (who was also at Elevation) opened up Salon Mark Carlos near Union Square. The space is gorgeous! Butter-​colored walls punctuated by ornate black chandeliers and lovely little details make this a true retreat. The lighting is incredible — I felt I was lit from within — and of course the talent is top-​notch.
They also do mani/​pedis and makeup and I’ve been told they’re hiring a full-​time makeup artist to do complimentary makeup touch-​ups at the end of each appointment. Total luxury.

I would NOT let anyone else cut or color my hair. She is that good. I am always getting compliments on my cut and color all the time. Never ends. Seriously!
I always let her due what she wants to my hair. All I let her know is if I want to keep it long or short. Bangs or no bangs. That’s it. She knows what suits my face/​personality. Like judy said below. And for color as well.
I also have been going to her for years. And if I had to I would travel where ever she was for a cut and color.

I LOVE this salon!
Holly Bromaghim is my stylist and she does an amazing job. I gave her some general guidelines at my first visit («I want it about this short, and I don’t like a lot of hair in my face») and then let her do her thing. She came up with a fabulous cut that really played up my features and looked amazing. Definitely the best cut I’ve ever had!
I don’t have the funds to get cuts on a regular basis either, so grow-​out-​ability is important to me, and her cut was the best «short» (chin-​length a-​line) cut to ever grow out with an incredibly awkward phase.
All the stylists and staff that I’ve met are great people (I’m a little biased since the wonderful Joshua — one of the receptionists — is one of my best friends), and I love the beautiful open and relaxing space they’ve created. It’s gorgeous and inviting. It’s easy for me to get to from BART, with it’s accessible location near Union Square.
If you’re looking for a stylist, call to Salon Mark Carlos and make an appointment! I’ve never seen anything less than fabulous hair go out their door.

Nobody has ever cut my hair as well as Mark does. I’m a guy with long curly hair and it’s always been difficult to find somebody who can competently cut my hair. Mark makes it look great, every time. I’m very happy that Mark is back in SF.
The salon itself is perfect. It’s just off union square in a nicely sized space on the second floor overlooking Grant street. It’s very hip and quite comfortable. It reminds me of a trendy «living room» style club in Soho. It’s much more friendly and inviting than the stark styles you usually see at a salon.
