I don’t understand why this place is so underrated. I would literally go back here. I was around the area to try Mikaku, but since they weren’t open yet, I went here instead. Service is very accommodating, they give complimentary miso soup, green tea and water. Atmosphere was simple, clean, and well lit. The serving time was on point! And the serving size is worth what I paid for. I had the Firecracker rolls, which I would recommend. Their ‘real’ California rolls were alright. ‘Real’, because they use actual snow crab instead of the imitation crab meat. I also had some tuna sashimi, which was alright. I had some Sapporo on the side too which cost me $ 1.75 cause it was still happy hour. And to top it off, they offered(este it was free) dessert(green tea ice cream), which was the cherry on top. Overall, I spent approx $ 30 for everything. Most of the time people come in for take out, but a lot of people come to dine after working hours.

Well so my friend lives near here and I have to say SUPER impressed. The sushi was awesome. The staff was overly friendly. I got the Lion King and it was surreal. The place is also unique in the fact that it is on a hill with Windows that give u the feeling you’re defying gravity. If you’re near the Ritz and want good sushi, come here…

I thought this place was decently priced for what you get and is my new favorite sushi place in this neighborhood. There was lots of variety(rolls, udon, donburi, sashimi, nigiri, soba to name some) and enjoyed the hot green tea and miso soup that were included with all the dishes. I also really enjoyed the large windows with a view of Pine st. and Grant ave. My server was alright, there was another server who seemed much friendlier. But everything was done in a reasonable, timely manner. I went for lunch and ordered the ikura and uni donburi for $ 20.95. I enjoyed it a lot. It was pretty fresh and filled me up. 4⁄5 stars because it’s not the ultimate best sushi I’ve had but near the top of the list, especially for the price. I would definitely come back here to satisfy an uni or sashimi craving if I’m in the area and will try out their dinner and happy hour. The happy lunch box was also a good, tasty deal. You get 3 things listed for $ 9.95. Other places charge a lot more for the same or less items.

This place was close to our home and we were looking for a quick sushi place so we stopped by, my husband and I are from Japan and had quite high standards but they served us a meal fully equipped with miso soup and was very close to what we were used to at home. The meal was great and the service was usual for an asian restaurant. It wasn’t anything over the top, or special, but it was a great fix for our home sickness. Also, there is A TON of choices! Which is great!(Even for vegetarians) They’re fish is safe and they’re dishes are very similar to what you would get at any Japanese restaurant, we both enjoyed being able to have a nostalgic meal away from home. They also do delivery which is awesome! But the food quality drastically drops, so beware! Nice service, quick and efficient, not very talkative. Great if you’re used to eating out in asia. Cheers!

I cannot believe it’s taken me so long to find this place! Had a hankering for sushi the other day but didn’t want to stray too far from the office. I got so excited when Rock Japanese came up on Unilocal. The service was fast and friendly, and the menu is extremely diverse. They also offer a lot of sake options, which can be hard to find with most of the super casual sushi places in the area. We started with the edamame and the seaweed salad(both solid). I appreciated the free miso soup, which was also very tasty. We ordered the following rolls: 1. 49er roll 2. Philadelphia roll 3. Dynamite roll 4. Poki roll All 4 rolls were super tasty, although the poki roll was my favorite. The fish tasted fresh and the rolls were generous sizes. A bit too much tobiko for my liking, but didn’t affect the rolls. Very casual atmosphere, great for a quick lunch or an outing with a group of friends. Will definitely be back!

Three of us were in town for a conference and we were looking for sushi restaurants that were walking distance from our hotel. We came across this place by accident, and we were pleasantly delighted by the quality of the food and courteousness of the staff. Out waitress was amazing(I wish we had asked for her name). I was in the mood for Unagi and she gave great recommendations. All of the rolls we tried were delicious! And the meal comes with complementary miso soup and ends with complimentary ice cream! We returned the next day for dinner because we thoroughly enjoyed our meal and the staff were so friendly and efficient! Our waitress also remembered our preferred ice cream flavor!

I’m surprised at the low ratings for this place. I had a great dinner and wonderful experience here! Food: –Tuna Tataki: this appetizer was really tasty. The fish tasted fresh and I enjoyed the light, but flavorful sauce served with it. A great starter. –Salmon Snow Roll: this roll was so yummy! The scallops had great taste and texture. Not much of a salmon flavor, as the name might imply, but the overall roll was quite enjoyable. Ambiance: When we first walked in, there was a bit of a damp smell that concerned me. However, it eventually dissipated. The restaurant was clean and we were sat in the corner where the 2 large windows meet. The view was great! Service: This, in combination with the food, is why I rate this place with 5 stars. The servers were so kind, polite, and prompt. We also loved the miso soup at the beginning of our meal and the scoop of ice cream at the end. Our drinks were refreshed and they had a smile on their face each time they came by. Impeccable!

Great sushi and very reasonably priced! I come here on a regular basis and have always received impeccable service and food delivered in a timely fashion. On top of that, they include complimentary Miso soup and ice cream with every meal. I would highly recommend!

Awesome! Needed to use the restroom so came in to get a beer so we could use it legit. Ordered a tempura California roll shrimp and vegetable tempura and deep fried stars. Awesome food and service. We ended up there during happy hour which made it even more amazing. But even regular price for a draft at $ 4.50 is a great price. Happy hour is half off. And I loved we could ask questions and learn about a different place and culture. Very friendly. My first post on Unilocal and this is a great place.

Delicious fresh sushi beautifully prepared! The service was fast and very friendly. Solid sushi spot in Chinatown. Ask for a seat by the big windows and enjoy the people watching!

Although I’m a California native, I recently visited SF for the first time. My friends and I were looking for a sushi place that wasn’t overpriced and we found this one in Chinatown. It was ridiculously hot when we walked in, probably due in part to the ridiculous uphill incline that you have to climb to get there and to the fact that the place is definitely not air conditioned. They had all the windows open though, so we cooled down pretty quickly thanks to the Bay Area breeze. The service was great and our waitress served us some complimentary ice cream for dessert, which was quite good. I ordered the Una-Ten-Roll with a tempura plate and spent $ 16. Both were absolutely delicious! I sampled a friend’s Salmon Skin Roll and that was great as well. I was super impressed and would have given this place 4 stars if it weren’t for the fact that both of my friends experienced stomach pains within an hour of our meal. By the time we made it back to where we were staying, one of my friends ran into the bathroom and shut the door, only to surprise us with the sound of what had to be a record breaking shart. We heard it from two rooms over – luckily for me, I didn’t have any problems stomaching my food. Head here if you’re looking for a detox that tastes great. Their bathrooms are super clean if nature’s will strikes you on location, so no worries!

I think this has got to be the worst sushi place ive ever been to. I suggest not coming here if you’re starving or if you don’t mind waiting 40MINUTES for your food to come out. My boyfriend and I came here with his friend and his girlfriend. We were seated right away and drinks were brought out almost immediately. We ordered our rolls and like I stated, waited way too long to receive even 1. They all arrived staggered and in 10 minute intervals. We didn’t get to eat together and basically lost our appetite since we waited too long and watched as we all individually ate our own rolls at different times. The service was just horrible and when we brought up the issue, we were acknowledged but later brushed off and forgotten. They definitely didn’t get a tip and I definitely won’t be coming here again.

A solid sushi spot. They have a good selection of food, and especially for Japanese restaurants, I tend to go for places with a large selection/variety of sushi rolls(though nowadays I don’t mind trying places with smaller selections if it is more authentic Japanese cuisine– anyways, I digress.). The service is very pleasant and attentive– the boyfriend and I have eaten here numerous times, and it is nice that the owner recognizes us– it gives off a very friendly and warm vibe. Also, it has a pretty large seating area, we never have to wait to be seated, and I like how much natural lighting there is because of the large windows. In terms of the food, I usually get their: — Phoenix Roll(shrimp tempura, avocado, eel, imitation crab) yummy! — Dragon roll(classic– can’t go wrong with a dragon roll– or the catepillar roll — Salmon Sashimi(large pieces, and it’s fresh! buttery and melts in my mouth) There are also other interesting rolls like one with mango in it, and some wrapped in soy paper, etc. BF gets the: — Udon, or bento box with beef teriyaki, or curry — all of which he likes, but I prefer sushi rolls Overall, I’d say this place is in a convenient location, has good sushi, and great service. The prices are not cheap– but this is pretty typical for a sushi place.

We chose this place for lunch to satisfy our craving for sushi while working in nearby FiDi. Overall it was a great lunch experience. We arrived around 11:30 am and we were 2 of only 2 tables! The host seated us right away and, as expected, the server took our drink orders immediately. The lunch menu has a myriad of options. Diners can order off the tradition sushi and entrée menu as well as the rather extensive lunch menu containing bowls and bento boxes. We decided to split 2 rolls and a side of edamame. Each diner is created with soup and seaweed salad for staters. The sweet 16 roll and rock n roll were great and they came out quickly. The edamame was cooked to perfection and not too salty. 2 rolls and a side were enough to fill us both. I will be back! Next time I would like to try a bento box– the table next to us ordered them and they look tasty. By 12:30pm the lunch rush really picked up. I’m glad we came when we did!

The food is alright. It reflects how much it cost. Lunch box $ 8.95 The waitress is mute, if she’s not mute then she chooses to communicate only through nodding and split second long smiles so do not go into this restaurant in hopes of getting normal human interaction. Location is pretty decent. No wait line during lunch hour.

Came here during the lunch hour and did not leave disappointed. The miso soup was fine yet I found it odd that my server didn’t give me a spoon or scoop to consume it with at first. Located in the heart of Chinatown, Sushi Rock had an assortment of lunch specials as well as reasonable prices on sushi. I choose a 12-piece California roll as well as a four pieces of Tekka and an additional four pieces of Kappa. For some reason, I found that the California roll wasn’t tightly wrapped as I am used to. No matter– I was just hungry, so I didn’t hold it against Sushi Rock. My wife had the lunchbox special, which I thought was the best deal for the $$$. I think it was between $ 8 – 10, yet the food assortment was sufficient and varied even for the first time visitor. I didn’t notice that there was any sushi within the lunchbox special, yet that didn’t seem to matter for my wife. I noticed that it had chicken, rice, and something else besides the miso soup and seaweed that was served prior to the arrival of the entrée. Overall, very reasonably priced($ 22 for lunch) and easy to get to. Certainly on my list to return to.

I hate making bad reviews but this place really needs some TLC. We live just down the road and would love this to be a great place to eat. I started to wonder if it was OK to eat there when i noticed a number of the bulbs were out of the bar area and the place is looking generally tatty. If you cant replace light bulbs and repair things, what is the kitchen going to be like… After a slightly confusing ordering process we waited for 45 minutes for food. When it came out two of the bits of roll where weird and misshaped. Looked like they had been squashed or dropped. We just left, they didn’t ask us to pay for the drinks which was nice of them. Please spruce up the place and dont squash the roll and we’ll be back soon.
