Bob and Ada love photography and we love Bob and Ada! They have beautiful shows of contemporary and vintage photography, but can also help you source images if you see something in a museum that you can’t live without. Great knowledge of anything connected with photography, including preservation, framing, collecting, and insurance.

We tend to make«gallery crawls» at least once a month and usually start at the collections at 49 Geary before moving on to 77, Sorokko and Anglim and some others. Among our favorites including the Fraenkel, Haines and Toomey Tourell, Robert Koch always presents an intriguing collection. The cat has a particular vision that really meshes with our aesthetic sense. Included in the collections are seminal works of the 19th and 20th centuries on view in the small back gallery space. Some of our favorites: Ed Burtynsky, Jeff Brouws, David Parker and the melancholic«Western Landmarks» of Steve Fitch. Some of the best contemporary exponents of our time. Exhibits typically cycle every 45 – 60 days so there’s always something goin’ on. JoeBob says check it out.

Totally pompous. Hard to think of a gallery where the proprietor is more snooty. On the verge of making a purchase, he began lecturing me(10 minutes? 15 minutes?) on appropriate framing techniques in a very condescending way where I couldn’t get a word in edgewise. Fortunately, there are other galleries(MUCH friendlier) representing the same artists. It’s great that other people like this gallery, but I definitely do not.

They have enough photography to fill the MOMA except their space is no where near that. You just have to return on periodic basis to take in the many great works displayed, and maybe pick up a book or two of the stuff you really love.

Consistently has great photography on exhibit, and has a good selection of photo books for purchase. Really enjoyed the Michael Wolf and Jeff Brouws exhibits they’ve put on. They also have an original Henri-Cartier Bresson print in the back room, which means +100 bonus points.

This place is THE best gallery in San Francisco for photography, and one of the oldest. They update the art every two months and usually have big name shows. Very nice people work there, too. Next show: EDWARDBURTYNSKY!!!
