Description

Specialties

Refugee Transitions’ mission is to assist refugee and immigrant families in becoming self-sufficient in the U.S. by providing services that help them attain the English language, life, job, and academic skills they need to succeed in their new communities.

History

Established in 1982.

Refugee Transitions began as the Refugee Women’s Program in 1982 in response to the large influx of Southeast Asian refugees into low-income neighborhoods and the alarming number of female refugees home-bound by fear, lack of familiarity with the city and its services and childcare responsibilities.

Refugee Transitions is the only organization of its kind in the San Francisco Bay Area. Since its incorporation as an independent agency in 1990, Refugee Transitions has served over 2,300 clients from around the world and has made a significant contribution to their quality of life. The agency has aided entire refugee and immigrant families in their efforts to become self-sufficient, by providing high-quality, individualized ESL instruction, orientation to life in the Bay Area, academic tutoring/mentoring for youth, and family support.

Since 1999, Refugee Transitions has expanded its services to the Lower San Antonio neighborhood of Oakland, Fremont, and the South Bay.
