Project Read-Main Library

Project Read changes everyone who gives it a chance, every time it is in session.
This is the only urban reading tutoring program I have dealt with, so I have no basis of comparison, but it would be amazing to me to find that there are any better than Randy and his loyal and HIGHLY skilled and trained crew.
Show up at the second floor of the library almost any hours and get yourself started. If only to learn of a resource that you can point people to who are in need of reading practice. I f they can’t help, they can find someone who can, and do it with a gentle touch and a smile.
And if by chance you are ready to learn more and even kick in two hours a week to work with some of the best, hungriest learners on the planet, tell them that and they will get you in the pipeline to get teaching. No matter that you have no experience. You will be screened and trained and matched with an appropriate learner who will surprise, challenge, and likely admire you for your role in their learning.
It is your choice, but sometimes it is best to not give up the truth that you will learn A LOT more than you will teach.
If you are not in the San Francisco area, you may want to try your local library and post your experience here. Maybe every city and town has a program like this!

project read is a wonderful free program for adults who want assistance with reading and writing english — i’ve been a tutor for about 1 ½ years, and was surprised to learn during the 6-​session training that most of the clients are american-​born — my learner, for example, was born in the bronx, but didn’t attend school regularly after the age of 8 or so — the staff are dedicated, friendly and helpful — you don’t have to have any teacher credentials to be a tutor (most of us have no teaching background) and if you have 2 hours of free time per week, i strongly recommend project read as a truly rewarding way to make a real difference in someone’s life
